A Message from the President Welcome to the first addition of our Coaches Association Newsletter for 2014. Firstly I want to congratulate those people who have taken on coaching at their club or school for the first time. It is a big commitment but I know it is one you will get plenty of satisfaction out of across the course of the season. Being able to watch footballers, both young and old, develop across the course of the year can be a very rewarding experience and one that I would highly recommend for anybody who may be thinking about getting involved in these types of roles in the future. Clubs are always looking for people who are positive role models who can make a difference in helping support and encourage the younger people within their community. I hope the early part of the season is progressing well for all of you even though the win/loss ratio may not be what you wanted at this stage of the year. If you are in this position remember there is plenty of time to redeem your team s position on the ladder so it is important to stay focused on the goals that have been set for your club or team for this year. It is great to see we now have 317 members in our association. This number is growing so that is fantastic and clearly indicates the importance that coach s place on keeping informed about the variety of different elements involved with coaching. It is through reading these types of articles and being aware of successful things that others are doing that our coaches are able continually update their skill set associated with the task of coaching. This is further emphasized by the number we had attend our Level One Youth/Senior Coaching Course on March 23 rd at Emmanuel College. We had 71 coaches in attendance who had the opportunity to listen to Ray McLean from Leading Teams and David Loader, who is the coach of the Ballarat Rebels in the Under 18 TAC Competition. This number is a really pleasing and indicates the passion our coaches have to do the best they possibly can in the roles they have at their football club. I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate the winners of the different categories in our Coach of the Year Awards for 2013. Jo Barfus from Emmanuel Hawks was our Auskick winner. Andrew McCombe from West Warrnambool Primary School won the Junior Coach of the Year while Graeme Twaddle from the North Warrnambool Eagles was the winner in the Youth section. Finally, Wayne Robertson from the Cobden Football/Netball Club was victorious in the senior section. It is important that we have the opportunity to recognize the great work our coaches do in fostering football throughout our region. Finally, I want to again thank our major sponsors for 2014. Ace Radio 882 3YB (Peter Headen) and Macey s Bistro (Peter Walsh) continue to provide excellent support to our association. In addition, I want to thank our other local sponsors and strongly encourage all our members to support all of these businesses, as we would not exist without their valuable support. All the best for the remainder of the year and always stay focused on the bigger picture of developing the footballers you are working with. Remember if you are looking for resources that might be helpful in your coaching role to contact Alan Thompson who has a variety of these types of things or can put you onto them. President Brian Brown Message From AFL Western District General Manager Lachy Patterson There is little doubt of the importance our football coaches play in the success of football clubs throughout the Western District. While some may think of a coach simply as a person to move the cones around at training and 'bark' orders from the sidelines, the truth is vastly different. Coaches play many roles in country football clubs - tacticians, mentors, marketers, fundraisers, and in some cases a father figure for young players. The list of jobs is endless and the value to a local community immense. It is for this reason the AFL Western District Commission fully supports the work undertaken by the Hampden Region Football Coaches Association. The Association's executive works hard to provide a high level of support for our local coaches including accreditation, continual education options, high level guest speakers and presenters and support structures for coaches at all levels. All the best to all of our coaches from Auskick level through to senior football in season 2014 and be sure to call on the Coaches Association should you require any assistance.
