GET INVOLVED Memorial Middle School has plenty of opportunities for students to get involved. Look at the following pages and consider joining one or more activities while you are at Memorial and help be a positive contributor to the Memorial community. Athletics: Memorial Middle School participates in the Greater Cleveland Conference. Teams that they will participate against include: Shore, Memorial, Euclid Forest Park, Euclid Central, Shaker Heights, and Solon. Teams compete in cross country, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track and cheerleading. In order to participate students must be in either 7th or 8th grade and meet eligibility criteria outlined by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. ADMISSION is being charged for all events at: $3.00 ADULTS $2.00 STUDENTS The Memorial athletic department is under the direction of our athletic director, Mr. Joe Jeckel, and teams are under the direction of qualified coaches. Memorial Middle School also expects that students and fans RESPECT THE GAME and display appropriate behaviors and good sportsmanship at all times as our young student athletes participate in their contests. Research shows that students who are involved in their school are more successful in their academics, are happier with school, and have less discipline problems. Please consider JOINING a club or activity this school year!!! Student Council Mrs. Foessett and Mrs. Thomas Student Council, the student government of Memorial Middle School, is responsible for working with the administration, staff, and fellow students to promote a positive learning environment. They hold school dances, sponsor fundraisers, plan and organize school assemblies, and fundraise. Ski Club Ms. Srp Students pay a fee to go skiing or snowboarding several Fridays in January and February fee covers the cost of busing, rental (if needed), and lift tickets. Information about the Ski Club will be out in the fall.
Pep Club Ms. Srp This is the perfect club for students who have a lot of energy. The Memorial Pep Club supports the many different student activities by making signs of support, cheering at games, planning pep assemblies. Students from all grade levels participate. NJHS Mrs. McCloskey & Mrs. McKenrick Students are selected for The National Junior Honor Society based on their academics, extracurricular activities, and their service to others. Therefore, NJHS is NOT open to all. Intramurals Mrs. Seagrove Members of the Intramurals club enjoy friendly competition with their peers in a variety of athletic games. Students do not have to have experience to participate. Model UN Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extracurricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. This activity takes place at MUN conferences.
Power of the Pen Power of the Pen is a competitive writing group for 7th and 8th graders. Tryouts for the team occur in the fall for competitions held on the local and state level. Writers compete against students from many other students from all over Northeast Ohio. If you have an interest in writing better, this would be a great activity for you to check into! Spelling Bee The spelling bee is held each spring with 6th, 7th and 8th grade students participating at Memorial. Winners and alternates are selected in each of the grade levels to compete in district, state, and national competitions (if successful). WEB Leaders Is a student group that works with 6th grade orientation and assists in advisory classes to build positive character traits and and promote a bully-free and safe school environment. These students are selected by Memorial staff members. WEB Leaders help students navigate Memorial, answer questions, serve as a role model, and promote positive interactions among Memorial students. Friends of Rachel Ms. Elliott Rachel's Challenge helps promote a positive climate and culture in our school. Rachel's Challenge exists to inspire and equip every person to be kind and to create a permanent positive change not only in themselves, but in our building.
Science Olympiad Science Olympiad is an interscholastic team that allows students to become experts in various events dealing with the study of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events that take place throughout the course of an entire day. The competitions take place on Saturday, and are held at area schools (Solon, Clearview, Mentor, Kenston, CWRU). The Science Olympiad season begins in late October and can go as late as mid-april. There is a $150 fee to participate in Science Olympiad to cover the cost of entry fees, transportation, and materials. Memorial Drama Club Mr. Couch Memorial Middle School has put on numerous high caliber drama productions. Students can star in the school s production by trying out for a part in the early part of the spring, or you can assist in one of the many other tasks that go along with putting on a school production. No acting experience is necessary, just an interest in having a good time Robotics Robotics club provides middle school students an opportunity to learn about the exciting world of robots. Competitors design, build, and operate remote-controlled armed and armored machines designed to fight in an arena tournament held at Lakeland Community College.
