HISTORY CHARLIE GANE MEMORIAL WOODBRIDGE LAWNMOWER CHRISTMAS PARADE In the summer of 1994 some of the neighbors in Woodbridge were sitting around talking when someone suggested we have a Lawnmower Christmas Parade. Listening to this conversation was 10 year old Charlie Gane. Charlie was not an ordinary boy as he was a victim of cystic fibrosis but that did not keep him from living a full life. He was actively involved in Boy Scouts, soccer and water skiing. Frequently he would be selling items from the school and you wanted to buy all he had. However from time to time he had to be hospitalized for complications. As Christmas approached in 1994 Charlie asked when we were having the Christmas parade. Not to disappoint Charlie we set the date for Sunday afternoon December 18 which was two days away. Charlie and his little sister, Katie, went around the neighborhood with three fax copies of a notice announcing the parade. They knocked on doors and asked the neighbors to the parade. He would let them read the notice but could not leave them a copy. When Sunday afternoon arrived Doug Sharp, Steve Lewkowitz, Steve Gane (Charlie s Father) decorated their lawnmowers ready for the parade. Much to their surprise other neighbors started arriving with decorated lawnmowers, bicycles, etc. The parade continued but in 1997 Charlie passed away from complications which followed a liver transplant operation. He was 13 years old. It was decided that year to call the parade the Charlie Gane Memorial Parade. ******************************************************** From the President: Lori Smith Greetings Woodbridge Neighbors! We are all gearing up for a busy holiday season and I want to wish you all an early Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! I can t wait to see all of the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the neighborhood. Don t forget we will be driving around and looking for the best decorations again this year! We are still looking for people to agree to serve on committees to rewrite the bylaws and restrictions! Despite so much interest in these at our annual meeting we have only had one person offer to work on this important undertaking. Please email or call us if you would like to be involved in how your community looks and operates pursuant to these important documents. It is really easy to complain at the meetings, but to make POSITIVE changes, YOU NEED TO GET INVOLVED! We are also looking for new board members to recommend to our selection committee. If you would be willing to serve, please email or call us and let us know. Remember, it takes caring and concerned members to make this community be the best that it can be. Again, I wish you and your family the greatest holiday!
