Someone asked me the other day... What is Cornerways Fostering? I said I would find out. and this is what I found out... Cornerways Fostering is a small team of social workers (Fiona, Amanda, Sharon and Marguerite) and administrators (Zoe and Casey) who spend time carefully looking for people who might be good at looking after and helping children. When they find those people, the team make sure the people are going to be able to look after children really well (because we know there are quite a lot of children who need to be looked after who can t live with their own families). The team provides the people with training and books to read and when they are ready, they become Cornerways Foster Carers. Then they are ready to look after children who need them, maybe for a little while, maybe for a long time, every child s situation is different. When the Cornerways Fostering Team hear about a child who needs a foster carer, it works hard to arrange for the child to go to live with their new Cornerways Foster Carer. So how many children are being looked after by Cornerways Foster carers?. Well it is about 20 children and young people, aged from babies to 19 years old! Come to the Cornerways Fostering Picnic, you may meet some of the team and the other children!

Did you know...? More people watch the World Cup finals than any other sporting event in the world even more people than the Olympic Games. 32 teams take part in the World Cup. The host automatically gets entry to the World Cup. 31 other teams have to battle it out in qualifying matches three years before the event. There are eight groups of four teams each in the World Cup. Only 8 countries have won the World Cup so far - Brazil (5 times), Italy (4 times), Germany (3 times), Uruguay (twice), Argentina (twice) and France, England and Spain (once each). Brazilians stop working when their team is playing a match. Banks shut 3 hours before the match. In 1986, FIFA banned shirt swapping because they did not want players being barechested on the field. India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but withdrew when they realised that playing barefoot was against the rules.
Why not have a go at your own game of Blow Football? You Will Need: A ball. The best type of ball depends on the surface of the pitch. If you re playing on a carpet, a light plastic ball like a Subbuteo football or perhaps a table tennis ball is ideal; if you re using a smooth surface like a table, you can use a heavier/rougher ball (even a dried pea!) Two goals (margarine tubs are good). A large drinking straw for each player Rules: Place a border round the pitch (books might be suitable) to stop the ball going outside the field of play. Then put the ball in the middle of the pitch and blow through your straw. If you get the ball in the opponent s goal you have scored. First to five goals wins. (or however many you want to play to). The only rule is that you re not allowed to touch the ball while it is in play - with your hand, straw or anything else. If you do, your opponent gets a penalty. Penalty shots: The offending player (or team if playing two-a-side) has to put down his (or their) straw(s), the ball goes on the middle of the pitch and the other team gets the chance to score unopposed. The offending team are not allowed to touch their straws to pick them up and defend until the other team has restarted the game. HAVE FUN!!!!
Maybe you re fed up with football... Perhaps you prefer to watch a bit of tennis - did you enjoy Wimbledon? Check out these interesting Wimbledon facts. Wimbledon is one of the world s most celebrated tennis events. Taking place at the All England Club in London, it runs for two weeks and attracts over 500,000 spectators. Wimbledon is one of four tennis Grand Slam events held each year. These tournaments are considered the most important competitions of the tennis season. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass courts. The grass is tended to year-round. And during the event, it s cut to a height of exactly 8 mm. The first Wimbledon championship took place in 1877, making it the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Men s Singles was the only event played that year. Ladies Singles and Men s Doubles events came on the scene in 1884. And, in 1913, the Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles events were added to the tournament. Wimbledon rules state that all players must be dressed almost entirely in white. Umpires can ask a player to change if they don t meet the dress code. For instance, in 2013, Wimbledon champ Roger Federer was told to switch his shoes for his next match because they had orange soles. During the tournament, 54,250 tennis balls are used. The balls are replaced after every seven to nine games to make sure they re in perfect shape throughout the match. Those not in use are even stored in a refrigerated container to keep them in tip-top condition. Interestingly, Wimbledon once used white tennis balls. But they were replaced with yellow balls in 1986 to make them more visible to TV cameras. About 250 ball boys and girls - known as BBGs - have the tough job of keeping track of all those fast-moving tennis balls. Months before the tournament, BBGs go through intense training sessions to prepare for Wimbledon. Wimbledon is well known for serving strawberries - an average of 166,055 portions are served during Wimbledon fortnight!
