J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 9 T h e B e a c h B e a t! P a g e 4 PLEASE READ!! - Re-Up / Join-Up Shag Dance, January 25, 2019... What an incredible record breaking year we had for membership 252 SOBS (178 Re-Ups from 2017 and 74 new members). Your membership in the SOBS runs from January 1 st thru December 31 st of the calendar year. Our January 25 th dance is your opportunity to Re-Up in the best Shag Club on the East Coast! It also is the opportunity to get your shagging friends to Join-Up with us as well. The cost is $20 per person for the membership year. The January 25th Re-Up / Join-Up fee will get you a year s membership, admission to the dance, and a meal. In addition, our DJ that evening will be the legendary Fessa John Hook! The Pro-Rated membership fees you see on our membership form is for NEW MEMBERS ONLY! If you are/were a SOBS member, the fee is $20 regardless of when you Re-Up during the year! Also, this year we are NOT ACCEPTING any pre-pay memberships prior to the January 25 th dance. Last January we had a problem at the door of our Re-Up / Join-Up dance because in some cases members paid or sent in their Re-Up fees 2-3 months in advance prior to the dance. A few of the mailed fees were not received at all. This only caused problems at the door trying to track/resolve pre-pays. Since we have to pay the Moose Lodge that night for the included Re-Up / Join -Up dinner, we have elected to not accept pre-paid memberships prior to the January 25 th dance. Thank you for your cooperation. To expedite the process for those members who are going to Re-Up, we will have a complete current membership list containing your 2018 information (Last/First Name, email address, mailing address, phone number and birth month/date-no year!). In lieu of filling out the membership form again, we ask you to verify, make any corrections and pay your dues. Of course, new members will have to initially fill out the form. A Membership Application for your friends is on the last page of each newsletter for their convenience. Checks should be made out to the SOCIETY OF BRUNSWICK SHAGGERS. Your benefits throughout the year 2 club dances a month, and plus our Sunday Series dances at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on OKI. We pay association fees to the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) and SOS (Society of Stranders) to be collectively represented to help preserve this dance we all love! (BMI), and Society of European Stage Authors and Composers (SESAC). These memberships & license mean we can legally play music from all the artists we love to hear. ALL THIS FOR JUST $20 A YEAR! As with most non-profit social clubs, volunteering is the backbone of our organization. During the year we ask our Members to step up for whatever small part you would like to play in all the events, dances, and fundraisers we conduct. Please consider helping us in the areas of: HOSPITALITY responsible for greeting Members and Guests at the door of our dances. They take money in and check off Members/Guests at the door and direct questions to a SOBS Officer. COMMUNICATION anyone is welcome to write articles or submit pictures for our Newsletter/Website. J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 9 T h e B e a c h B e a t! P a g e 9 What NOT To Do When Dancing the Shag by Kaitlyn Yarborough (Southern Living Magazine) The Carolina Shag is the dance to know, whether it comes to Southern soirees or thrown-together beach parties. It s a simple, quick, and social dance that makes sure no one is a stranger and everyone is having a great time. Now, it s important to point out the basics for dancing the Shag and why it s good to have it in your arsenal; but simple instruction doesn t always cut it for overachieving Southern dancers. If we re going to dance, we re going to do it right. Keeping in mind that there are endless variations in skill level, natural proclivity, and learning styles, here are some mistakes you don t want to make if you re dancing the Shag. 1. Keeping your head down. It s hard not to look down when you re a beginner, but professionals will tell you that bad posture makes for fumbling feet. Keeping your head up and eyes forward will help your body move naturally, even if the steps don t come easily quite yet. 2. Not knowing the most basic pattern by heart. Get as creative with this dance as you want, but if you haven t mastered the most basic steps, it ll start looking more like a free-for-all than a Carolina Shag. The first thing you should learn for this dance is the one-and-two, three-and-four, five-six pattern that will be your solid base. 3. Losing your time (and not knowing how to fix it). Of course, timing is very important when it comes to any structured, or even semi-structured, dance because it keeps partners in sync, it gives the dance a tempo, and it makes for a pretty vision for those watching. If you get off track between your steps and the music, which is very common when learning this quick dance, it s easiest to use the rock step in this case, the five -six part of the basic pattern to get yourself back in the rhythm and time. 4. Taking oversized steps. This dance is quick and compact. Beginners often start taking larger steps after getting the hang of the basics (and getting a little excited about it), but that will only make you more prone for losing your timing and looking a little sloppy. While the Shag is fun and social, it s not meant to look very spread-out or loose. Keep your steps small, and you ll look like a pro. 5. Not minding those hands. In the Carolina Shag, you re only connected by one hand with your partner, at about arms length away. First of all, don t let your free hand just lie limp by your side. It s neither helpful nor looks very pleasing. Some suggest trying to keep it above the waist at all times. Secondly, there shouldn t be any pushing or pulling with the hands that are holding the couple together. This is a dance, not tug-of-war. If the man is leading well and his partner has a basic grasp of the steps, the arms should be just a level connection, not a means of performing the dance. 6. Letting your head get in the way. Another good tip from experienced dancers? Don t think too much. We know, easier said than done. But, this advice applies to beginners who should be focusing on just the basic steps, as well as to intermediate dancers who are throwing in other step combinations. Thinking too much about what your feet are doing leads to your head turning down to look at what your feet are doing, which leads to all sorts of other problems. Not to mention, you ll have much more fun if you re not thinking too hard about it! 7. Giving up or stopping on the dance floor. This mistake says more about morale than anything. Don t be afraid of looking silly or not getting the steps just right at least you re getting out there to have some fun and learn something new. It s natural to have some foot fumbles, but try your best to recover as opposed to downright stopping. You ll look natural and normal if you just do what feels right.

Our Christmas Dinner Dance on December 8 th brought out 83 SOBS, 8 guests (Bob & Pat Caruso, Sande DelColle, Philip & Letha Lake, Doug Strother, Terry Wardlow, Sonny Wells), and 2 new members. Club favorite, DJ Jerry Burrage kept us dancing to his great collection of beach music. The Moose Lodge kitchen did a fantastic job with the delicious baked chicken dinner on the club! Thanks to all who brought the incredible desserts! Thanks also to those who decorated our event the last club dance of 2018!
