May 25, 2017 Dear Students and Parents of Goodman 8 th grade: We are so excited about the upcoming events that celebrate the accomplishments of our 8 th grade students! Some information about these events is provided below. If questions remain after reading this letter, please don t hesitate to call us. Attached are forms that must be completed and returned by the June 5 deadline along with payment as noted. Checks payable to Goodman are accepted at school or you may pay online by selecting the Bookkeeper/On-line Payments option on the Goodman website. Students who may participate in these activities are those who have displayed good behavior, have maintained good attendance, have all of their school assignments turned in, and have made responsible choices this year. Specifically, students who have not been involved in any exceptional misconduct issues this year may participate. In some instances, we may require a student be accompanied by a parent if there are other behavior concerns. In those cases, parents will be contacted directly to make those arrangements. Field Trip to GHHS June 12 th ATTACHED: Permission slip for the field trip to GHHS on June 12 th (return by 6/5) Students will visit GHHS from about 9:00 to11:30. They will participate in planned activities while at GHHS but will eat lunch at their normal time at Goodman. Transportation will be provided and there is no cost to students. Eighth Grade Field Trip June 16 th ATTACHED: Permission slip for the Family Fun Center on June 16 th (return with payment by 6/5) We will leave school at about 8:30 and return at about 2:15 on June 16 th so that students can take their regular buses home. The cost for this activity is $12 and tickets will be on sale at the Student Store or on or Webstore (via the Bookkeeper/Online Payments link on our website) until the June 5 th deadline. If purchasing the ticket is a financial hardship on your family, please indicate that on your child s form. If you would like to make a contribution to help provide scholarships for students who might not otherwise be able to afford this event, you may include any extra amount with your ticket purchase. We greatly appreciate the generosity of our families to help make sure all students are able to attend this event! The ticket price includes admission, rides, tokens, and estimated transportation costs for these events. STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING A SACK LUNCH OR MONEY TO PURCHASE LUNCH AT THE FUN CENTER. The cost to purchase lunch at the Fun Center is approximately $5. Students who will need a sack lunch from the Goodman cafeteria on June 16 th should make arrangements in advance with the Food Service staff. Attire for this activity is school clothing (casual), and students may want to dress in layers as some of the activities are outside. Eighth Grade Moving On Ceremony and Celebration Dance June 19 th On the evening June 19 th we will have two events. At 6:00 pm students and parents are invited to attend our Moving On Ceremony at Gig Harbor High School. This ceremony is a group celebration of the transition to high school. Students will not be recognized individually at this event. A slideshow will be presented, and parents may purchase additional slides please see the order information on the Goodman website and submit your order no later than May 31 st. Families are encouraged to arrive early for photos if desired. At the conclusion of the ceremony, students will ride the bus to Goodman for their 8 th Grade Celebration Dance. The dance portion of this evening is for Goodman students only and runs from 7:00 to 9:00. The theme for the evening is Glow in the Dark. Please be prompt in picking up your student at 9:00. There is no charge to attend these events, but the attached signed contract is required. Dressing for the Moving On Ceremony and Dance: Students sometimes get caught up and carried away with the preparations for the celebration. Remember that this is a middle school activity and students should choose their apparel for the evening with that in mind. School dress code does apply, so be aware of strap width and dress length when shopping. Students should choose shoes that allow for dancing and do not present a safety risk. They will not be able to go barefoot so girls may want to bring a second pair of shoes should their dress shoes become too uncomfortable. Boys also like to dress up for this special event, but tuxedos are clearly not appropriate. This is not a formal occasion, and is not a graduation or prom-like event. The dance is not meant to be a couples activity, but should be a fun, stress-free evening for students to celebrate their achievements and their friendships as a group! How You Can Help: Parents can help make these events memorable for our 8 th graders in a number of ways. You can contribute financially to help provide scholarships for students who might not otherwise be able to attend as mentioned above. Other opportunities to donate time or materials are available, please watch for more information online! Survival Tips for 8 th Grade Celebration: 1. Please have your student eat dinner before arriving at the Moving On Ceremony. Light snacks will be provided at the dance. 2. There will be photo opportunities at Gig Harbor High School upon arrival to the Moving On Ceremony. Please allow a few extra minutes for pictures. 3. Immediately following the Moving On Ceremony, 8 th grade students only will board school buses to be transported directly back to Goodman for the dance. Pick up time after the dance is 9:00 pm. *Please keep this information sheet for your reference when returning the attached permission forms!
