Dear Family, Bubble, fizz, ahhhh...when you have kids, it s tough to keep soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages out of your grocery cart. But think about this: a child who drinks one or more cans of sugar-sweetened beverages a day is 55 percent more likely to be overweight than a child who drinks little or none. Regular soda has lots of calories, no nutrients, and more sugar about nine teaspoons per can than your child s body needs. Sugary drinks including regular sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and juice drinks with added sugar are also linked to other health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and tooth decay. Let s work together to teach about healthier beverage choices. Reach for water first. Milk and 100% fruit juice can also be good options, but remember that your drinking glass may have multiple servings. Encourage good nutrition both in and out of the classroom! Your child is a participant in the American Heart Association s Jump Rope for Heart program. The AHA has five priority messages for your family: Physical Activity Healthy Eating Sodium Sodas and Other Sugary Drinks Tobacco/Smoking Sincerely, teacher It s sometimes better to show your kids rather than just tell them. Here are some great ways to demonstrate why you should limit sweetened beverages. Show them the oh-so-gross syrupy sludge in sweetened beverages. Pour a can of regular soda (or a sports drink or sweetened juice) into a pot. Bring the drink to a boil and, once most of the water from the drink has boiled away, carefully spoon out the thick, syrupy residue that remains. Yuck! Does your child really want to drink this? Demonstrate the amount of sugar in some beverages. Gather sugar packets and two glasses. Place a 20-ounce bottle of regular soda by one glass and fill the second glass with water. Have your child count out 22 packets of sugar, tear them open, and pour the sugar in the glass by the soda. Point out that there is no sugar in water. Which drink is the healthier option? Want a refreshing alternative? Put 100% fruit juice in an ice tray, insert round toothpicks, and freeze. Then invite your child to enjoy this healthier mini ice pop! Good to Know! Diet soda doesn t have any calories, but it doesn t have any nutrients either. When you re thirsty, water is your best bet because there are no calories in water and your body needs plenty of it to function well. CALLING ALL BAKERS!!!! On December 10 th, the Hampton Bands will be holding their annual Holiday Cookie Walk in conjunction with the Holiday Extravaganza at Hampton High School. Proceeds from this event benefit the Elementary, Middle, and High School band programs. For those who aren t familiar with how it works... We ask willing band families (and friends of the band) to bake a minimum of 4 dozen of their favorite holiday cookie. Cookies will be trayed and clearly labeled with the type of cookie and displayed on tables. Customers will be provided with a plastic glove and a take-out container and they will proceed through the Cookie Walk choosing their favorite cookies. When finished making their selections, they will pay for their cookies by weight at $9 per pound. We typically have close to 100 different kinds of cookies and well over 5,000 cookies! Feel free to sign up for one of the cookies listed on the Sign Up Genius, add your own family favorite, or try a new recipe. We are requesting a minimum of 4 dozen of the same kind of cookie from each baker, although feel free to sign up for several different kinds! Several bakers making the same type of cookie is OK, but keep in mind that we want to offer as large of a selection as possible so customers will have a hard time choosing and be enticed to buy more! If we get too many sign ups for the same type of cookie we may need to reach out to ask a baker to consider a different cookie. When deciding on a cookie to contribute, remember that the cookies are going from your original container, then to a tray, then to the customer s container. Consider cookies that will hold up well in their travels and still make a nice presentation when the customer serves them. Due to the fact that many of the participating vendors sell candy items, we will not be taking homemade candy to sell in the Cookie Walk. Cookies should be delivered in a DISPOSABLE box or container. We will be unable to keep track of containers/trays that need to be returned to individuals. Also, please clearly mark your box/container with the name of the cookie so we can accurately label them when trayed so that customers can easily identify what is available for purchase. Drop off dates, times and locations are as follows: Friday, December 9 th Hampton High School Cafeteria from 4 pm 8pm Saturday, December 10 th Hampton High School Cafeteria no later than 8am. WE WOULD PREFER TO HAVE ALL COOKIES ON FRIDAY EVENING IF POSSIBLE TO ALLOW FOR SET UP If you are absolutely unable to drop off at the High School on Friday or Saturday morning, please contact Lisa Wagner lisawagner4@verizon.net to make other arrangements. Sign Up Genius link = http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0c4ba5ab28a2f85-cookie1. If you enjoy baking for the holidays, please consider baking a few extra dozen for the Cookie Walk! Remember that this event benefits ALL Hampton Band students so even if you don t have a child in the High School Band, your child will still benefit from the proceeds of this event Feel free to contact Lisa Wagner with any questions at lisawagner4@verizon.net or 412-980-8902. Thanks for your support!
