At the Helm Commodore Jan Jernigan April is here and it s time to celebrate as spring gets into full swing at CSC! This month will be a big one starting with Easter Sunday, April 1 st, when CSC hosts a sunrise (OK, 8:00am) service Columbia Sailing Club Easter Regatta March 30 th through April 1 st conducted by Bobby Dial, the last exciting (hopefully) day of sailing for the Easter Regatta, followed by CSCA s world s best burger lunch, and the Easter Regatta awards. The day will continue with a fun Easter Egg Hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny, a female bunny, or so I have heard! And all that is just for the first day of April! Charles Bumgardner and his team have put together a fantastic Easter Regatta that starts Friday, March 30 th, and goes through April 1st. They have worked well together to put on a first class regatta. This regatta has been sailed in J/24s since 1987 and has the reputation as one of the world s most popular and enduring J/24 events! As Charles pointed out, One of the keys to our success is our down-home southern hospitality. Kudos to all who help to make this regatta such a huge hit! David Van Cleef, our new Sailing Director, has been working diligently to roll out a great summer program for Junior Sailors. Summer classes are open for registration for Sunday April 1 st, 4:00pm Columbia Sailing Club AGES 10 & UNDER BRING YOUR OWN BASKET! Page 1
ages 7 to 17. The program will start June 11th and continue through July 27th. This is open to the public so please tell your friends with children and grandchildren to sign up. In addition, David, along with Margaret Clarkson and Pete Gindhart, has worked hard on our new and improved website. Stay tuned more to come soon. Many thanks to all 42 of you who came out for Work Day on St. Patty s Day at CSC! We accomplished a lot and got the club looking great for the Easter Regatta. That same day, David Van Cleef, Bruce Seiffert and Charlie Calhoun attended the opening of the new West Marine to help promote Junior Sailing. I am happy to announce we will receive a grant for our Junior Program from West Marine. We are moving forward to put the sailing back in CSC! We have another special regatta in April, the Lightning Spring Championship April 28-29. As many of you remember, we hosted the Championship of Champions regatta a few years back with the help of the Lightning Class. They are a very talented group! Please come out to show your support for these fine sailors. With so much happening at CSC, you need to come be a part of it! Happy Easter to all Jan Come check out an Open Bic! Past Commodores and Past Presidents Party You are invited to an evening honoring Past Commodores of the Columbia Sailing Club and Past Presidents of the Columbia Sailing Club Auxiliary Saturday, May 12, 2018 Cocktails at six-thirty Recognition of Honorees At Seven o clock RSVP by May 5th - Members only Traditional Blue Blazer -BYOB Jan Jernigan 803 261-3391 jan.jernigan@ms.com In an effort to find an exciting youth dinghy, CSC hopes to introduce the Open Bic to the 2018 Summer Program. We expect a new fleet will provide more smiles and thrills and that we will be able to keep even more kids excited about sailing! These boats are modern, made from roto-molded plastic with a wide transom, pointy bow and open cockpit. Augusta Sailing Club has loaned us a boat and it will be at the club for all that want to check it out. It is currently in the main club house and can be made available for a demo sail. With your help, the Club would like to purchase nine boats and get the 10th boat free! The cost per boat is $2,600. Interested members would split the cost of the boat with the Junior Program 50/50 and the boat would be available for use outside any Junior Program classes for 5 years. At the end of the 5 years, the boat would belong to the Junior Program. For more information, please contact sailingdirector@columbiasailingclub.org for more details. Page 2
THE VICE REPORT Vice Commodore David Mosely 2018 has begun with a bang and our facilities have never looked better! Our weather is well, crazy, but there is wind! The sailing and education programs being developed and marketed are really turning heads, increasing interest in our club and sailing in general. A big shout out to Margaret Clarkson, David Van Cleef, and Pete Ginhart for updating our existing CSC website. Our website will have a look that reflects our sailing club to both members and visitors. We all look forward to getting more information about our club and its offerings from our website. The new CSC website will allow us to apply to camps and educational sessions as well as pay by online by card. I want to thank David van Cleef, Charlie Calhoun, and Bruce Seiffert for representing us at the grand opening of the new West Marine in Harbison. With sail boats set up out front, David, Charlie, and Bruce were able to talk to people about our club and provide brochures created by our Telltale editors. As a result, we had many new campers signed up the next week! I have said this before, but my belief is people just don t understand our sport and it s up to us to explain that you don t have to have large yacht, a big bank account, or an athlete s body to participate in sailing. It is up to us to spread the word and, Further interest in sailing in central South Carolina. You may recognize this as our Columbia Sailing Club mission statement. Membership News: We have some interested potential members working on applications as they go through our membership process. Thank you to the CSC members sponsoring these potential members! A juniors sailing open house and cookout were held for members as well as those who have heard of us but haven t seen the club or been part of the sailing scene. CSC is happy to provide opportunities for future junior sailors in our area and renew interest in junior sailing. To pull off these events, we need the support of our membership. If you like to talk about sailing, would like to show people around our facilities, or you would like to be present to lend a hand, there will be plenty of opportunities for you this year! See you on the water! David Page 3
The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert Well Spring has sprung and the water has been turned on in the Back Cove which makes it official. Michael Mayfield is now overseeing the Back Cove and recently sent out an update on slip assignments, waiting list and some minor repairs that needed to be addressed. We thank Michael for his efforts. The upcoming J/24 Easter Regatta will, as of this writing, have 21 boats coming in. Since this is a world qualifier for District 8, they all have to be measured and weighed in. The Lightning Spring Championship is on April 28-29 th ; we are expecting a great turn out. The Spring Dinghy Series will begin April 18th with a first warning at 6:30PM. I will be setting up a Sign- Up Sheet in the Canteen including Race Committee Volunteers needed. We will have a Skippers Meeting at the Beach House at 6PM. As most of you know we were invited to attend the Grand Opening (see pictures) of the new West Marine Store on Harbison just down from Target and Old Navy stores. West Marine has the Blue Future Youth Adventure Education & Stewardship program that promotes Junior Sailing. The new CEO along with the Regional Director were in attendance for the ribbon cutting. Columbia Sailing Club will be receiving a donation / grant from West Marine for our Junior Sailing Program for participating in this event. David VanCleef, our Sailing Director, had a 420, Opti and a BIC (borrowed from Augusta Sailing Club) in full sail mode set up in the parking lot. They generated a lot of interest from juniors and parents alike. He was promoting our Junior Sailing Program and the Junior Open House that was held Saturday, March 24 th. Inside the store we had a table set up with literature about CSC that was being monitored by Charlie Calhoun, Ansley Sloan (GSC) and myself. We were promoting our New Membership Open House that is scheduled for May 19 th. We encourage all our members to get the word out. You are our best source for recruiting since we all have a passion for sailing. More news to report on this on our next edition of the Tell Tale. LMYRA has had four races thus far with the first two having a great breeze that enabled the boats to go sail down to Midway which we do not get the chance to do very often. As a reminder-we have both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker Divisions. So even if you are not a hard core racer, I think you would enjoy the fellowship and the sailing. Hoping to see you on the water! CSC Auxiliary News President Diane Augsburger The St. Patrick s Day Beer Tasting offered so many types of beer and we had a great time! I had many people say they didn t attend because they do not drink beer, but that is not a good reason to miss it because your favorite beverage would have tasted great with our chicken or vegetarian chili or a bratwurst. Thank you to Bill Draper who brought his own keg of homemade beer and to Kris and Kim who made the chili. The cupcakes made by Allison were delectable with the Blue Moon Citrus cupcakes being the favorite. (Although the Guinness cupcakes were a very, very close second!) Clearly, we have some talented cooks at the club. We are gearing up for the Easter Regatta and hope to see some new faces assisting with our famous club hospitality. Please sign up with Kim Milling Thursday-Sunday and get credit for a CSC Workday! Contact her at D.milling@sbcglobal.net. The work is easy (slice, dice, make coffee, serve, clean up) and it s a great way to see members you may not have seen in a while and to meet someone new. Ashley Greene has new merchandise ordered for the Easter Regatta and it will be available for you to purchase. Soon these items will be available via special order on the CSC website, so take a look and see what your options will be. Hats, koozies, decals, burgees and license plates will always be kept in stock. If the store isn t open when you are at the club this weekend, ask if a CSCA member is available to find what you need! A Grill-Your-Own is planned for Friday, April 27th, which is the Lightning Spring Championship. Pat and Bill Freeman will be our hosts please join us! A CSCA meeting will be held Tuesday, April 10 th, at 7 pm with the pre-meeting meal at 6:30, compliments of Carolyn Tupper and Haidee Stith. We hope you will join us, meet some new friends, and support our club with your ideas and talents. On Tuesday, May 8 th, at 7 pm, the last CSCA meeting for the season will be held. Meetings will resume in September. Saturday, May 12, will be the Annual Past Commodores and Past Presidents Party. In April, we will offer sign-ups for hors d'oeuvres and look forward to seeing you there to carry on our CSC traditions by honoring the past commodores and past Auxiliary Presidents of our club. From the Sailing Director David Van Cleef I would like to start by thanking the CSCA for organizing, donating, and setting up breakfast for the college sailors that attended the Gamecock Regatta on March 10. I am not aware of any other organization that does this and it is a great way to show the true CSC hospitality. I also appreciate all that came out to support the event. We had wind and sunshine and got 12 races off. An extended Junior Summer Program is now open for registration. Camps will run for eight weeks and campers will attend for full day sessions. Please share this information with your friends and family and invite them to enroll. Detailed information on the different camps, registration, and payments can now be made online at www.columbiasailingclub.org. Page 6
Coming this summer will be two new exciting series, Tuesday night Women on Water (WOW) and Wednesday night PHRF races will run from June 5 to August 7. The WOW series is open to all women and will be taught by women instructors. It is designed to promote sailing but will also be mixed in with some social events each night. The Wednesday night PHRF races will be a FUN series designed to get sailors and families out on the water for some racing mixed with week night relaxation and comradery. Races will start near CSC and finish off the CSC dock. Pursuit (reverse starts) will likely be used. Drop marks will be set accordingly each night. Please stay tuned for more information on both series coming in April. I am excited to announce CSC s newly refreshed website will be live beginning in April with changes to navigation, content and dropdown menus optimized for both mobile and desktop versions. This will be a great tool to promote the new sailing programs and generate interest.
