Footnotes APRIL 2011 VOLUME 24, ISSUE 4 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE AMATEUR BALLROOM DANCERS ASSOCIATION President s Message Greetings friends of NHABDA: Spring is here, so we are told! We did have Spring at our last dance with 145 dancers in attendance and music by Rico Barr. A nice waltz lesson was taught by Mica Milojkovic and the showcase was presented by Queen City Ballroom. It was so nice to have them back. Thank you Karen for a beautiful show and lesson. Looking forward to a return engagement! We could not have our dances without the many volunteers. Thank you Denise (and Phil) Kelly for the awesome decorations. Thank you Bill and Maria Vanderhoof for the mixer music and of course to all those who donated the food. Thank you to both Kathy Carbonello for donating the basket and Edziu Sentkowski for the flowers that were raffled off. Thank you to the person who donated the wine for the raffle, I never got their name, but it is surely appreciated. Thank you to all who took part in the raffle. NHABDA donated $251. to the Red Cross Japan Relief Fund since Cheryl Hannaford donated back her win of $125. Speaking of the Hannafords, I don t think they should be allowed near the stage during future raffles (I lost count of their winnings!). [Ed. Note: for the record, the winning ticket I held was for Gerry Ouellette, who had to leave early. The fourth pick was won by one of our attendees who just happened to be standing near the stage at the time. I think Cheryl had a lucky aura around her that night! JH] On April 17th, the Outreach dancers will be at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscowen. Please contact Joyce Wilson if you are interested in attending. Next month come Dance in the Rain with us on April 16th at Pinkerton Academy, Rico Barr is performing the music. Steppin Out Dance will teach us a foxtrot and present us with a showcase during the night. Since we will be learning a foxtrot, I thought a little history might be nice In the summer of 1914, an American called Harry Fox performed in New York. Born Arthur Carringford, he stagenamed himself Fox after his grandfather. He is credited by most as the originator of the Foxtrot. He married Yansci Dolly of the Dolly Sisters. The two were seen dancing a dance that put everyone in a good mood. The audience named Fox s dance The Foxtrot. There exists a parallel account of the Continued on page 2 Dancing in the Rain Dance Sat., April16, 2011 Shepard Auditorium at Pinkerton Academy Derry, NH Route 93 to Exit 5. MUSIC & MEMBERSHIP Gerry Ouellette 603-471-0636 WEBMASTER Keith Johnson 603-529-7094 President s Message continued from page 1 origin of the Foxtrot. The New York Theatre was one of the largest in the world. It was being converted to a movie house. The roof of New York Theatre was converted to a Jardin de Danse. Harry Fox and his company American Beauties were selected to put on a dance act between shows. Fox s dance was an instant hit. He performed trotting steps to ragtime music. His dance that put everyone in good humor became known as Fox s trot or The Foxtrot. Hope to see you on the 16th of April! Lynne P.S. From Cheryl: 50/50 Raffle I know you re all probably thinking that the 50/50 raffle was rigged but it truly wasn t. I can t believe that I won the cash which I immediately gave back to NHABDA so that the full amount would be donated to the American Red Cross - Japan Relief Fund. I could have used the cash for at least two tanks of gas, but my heart goes out to everyone in Japan that is suffering from the recent disasters there. Then, to win the floral arrangement was amazing. You don t know how long I ve waited to get a floral arrangement that was donated by Edziu Sentkowski. He always brings such beautiful flowers for a door prize. Thank you Edziu! Life is like dancing. If we have a big floor, many people will dance. Some will get angry when the rhythm changes. But life is changing all the time.
