1 STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club ROSEHILL GARDENS RACECOURSE Saturday 30 August 2014 Weather: Showers Track: Heavy (8); downgraded to Heavy (9) at 1.26pm. Rail: +6m Penetrometer: 5.89 STEWARDS: R P Murrihy (Chairman), M F Van Gestel, C G Polglase and cadet T A McDonald (jl) Supplementary Reports: WARWICK FARM Wednesday 27 August 2014 Race 6: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1600m Trainer Mr C Waller advised that Chateau Lafaite had now been retired. ROYAL RANDWICK Saturday 23 August 2014 Race 1: TAB Early Quaddie Handicap 1400m App. T Marshall, rider of Whisperossa, was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on eight occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100m (three additional). Race 2: Randwick City Mayor s Cup 2000m J McDonald, rider of Cleansing Ale, was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on six occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100m (one additional). Race 5: Show County Quality (Group 3) 1200m Trainer Mr C Waller reported that Our Voodoo Prince had pulled up well and will take benefit from the run. He indicated he will look to step the gelding up in distance. Race 7: Toy Show Quality (Group 3) 1300m Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden reported that Gypsy Diamond had pulled up well, however, the stable was yet to decide whether or not they will experiment with blinkers on the mare. LATE RIDING CHANGES As J McDonald was stood down, the Stewards permitted the following rider substitutions: Race 6: Race 7 T Bell on Celtic Prince. T Berry on Masterstroke. RACE 1: TAB Early Quaddie Handicap 1400m: Echo Prince was badly crowded on jumping between Harrier Jet and Hampton Court, which shifted in. Shortly after the start First Seal shifted out, resulting in Idyllic Scenery being taken out, which resulted in Harrier Jet having to be checked when crowded between Echo Prince and Idyllic Scenery. First Seal continued to shift out, despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in Idyllic Scenery having to be checked a short distance later. Approaching the 200m Sweynesse was steadied when disappointed for a run between Idyllic Scenery and First Seal. Sweynesse then shifted to the inside of First Seal to obtain clear running. Hampton Court was inclined to shift ground out when placed under pressure in the straight, resulting in Echo Prince being briefly hampered near the 200m. After being corrected by its rider, Hampton Court then shifted back in slightly, resulting in Idyllic Scenery being briefly crowded

2 near the 150m. When questioned regarding the performance of Burning Passion, B Avdulla stated he expected to be in a forward position and, after commencing only fairly and when a number of runners to his inside showed an intent of going forward, he elected to take up a trailing position, rather than having to make use of his mount to go forward. He added that Burning Passion travelled comfortably throughout the early stages, but when asked for an effort from the 700m, the colt took some time to respond to his riding and, in his view, was having difficulty in handling the heavy track conditions. He further added that, after being shifted wide on entering the straight, Burning Passion made up reasonable ground and, in his opinion, may not also have handled today s step up in class from midweek grade. Trainer Mr A Cummings advised that Burning Passion was unsuited by getting further back in the field and, in his view, failed to handle the heavy track conditions. Mr Cummings undertook to report back on the progress of Burning Passion subsequent to the race. When questioned, J Parr, rider of Echo Prince, stated, after being crowded at the start, the colt travelled well throughout the event, but, in his view, raced flatly. A post-race veterinary examination of Echo Prince revealed the colt to have sustained a speedy cut to the near hind coronet. Stable representative Mr M Newnham stated that Echo Prince will now be spelled. When questioned, App. W Costin, rider of Harrier Jet, reported that, whilst the gelding travelled comfortably when held together throughout the early and middle stages, when asked for an effort on straightening Harrier Jet was inclined to lay in and, in her view, failed to handle the heavy track conditions when under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination of Harrier Jet did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 2: More Than Ready Handicap 2000m: Cuban Star dwelt when the gates opened and missed the start as a result (2.5L). When questioned, T Berry, rider of Don t Tell Linda, stated that from the 800m his mount commenced to lay in badly and, in so doing, cramped the ground of Senta Helga. Don t Tell Linda continued to lay in and weakened badly, placing T Berry at a disadvantate in his endeavour to ride his mount out. A post-race veterinary examination of Don t Tell Linda did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Ms J Bowen stated that Don t Tell Linda had pleased the stable since its last start at Rosehill on 16 August 2014 and could offer no explanation for today s disappointing performance. After taking into account T Berry s explanation, Ms Bowen was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for Don t Tell Linda prior to its next race start. When questioned, S Clipperton, rider of Fairyland, stated his mount felt very flat and failed to finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination of Fairyland did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Smith indicated that he had recommended Fairyland be spelled. RACE 3: Schweppes Handicap 2400m: As K O'Hara s arrival at the track was delayed, J Collett was substituted as the rider of Saintly Sun. Ay No Digas began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped Pentometer. When questioned, T Clark, rider of Tohunga, could offer no explanation for why his mount floundered so badly from the 600m, other than it did not handle the heavy track. Stable representative Mr M Newnham reported that Tohunga had done well leading into the race. A post-race veterinary examination of Tohunga did not reveal any abnormalities. The inquiry was adjourned so that the stable may report back on the immediate racing future of Tohunga. RACE 4: Cellarbrations Handicap 1100m: At the 700m Stolen Kisses struck the running rail and became unbalanced. Runway Star and Stolen Kisses were held up in the early part of the straight. Over the latter stages Maysoon was inclined to lay out away from Runway Star, which initially took a narrow run between Maysoon and Maroon Bay. As a result of this incident, at the 100m Valid Contract had to be steadied away from the heels of Maysoon. When questioned concerning the performance of Oh So Adorable, App. W Costin stated racing second up, with its big weight on a heavy track and being forced to cover additional ground throughout the event were the major factors in the mare finishing at the rear of the field. A post-race veterinary examination of Oh So Adorable

3 did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Clarke undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Oh So Adorable subsequent to the race. T Bell, rider of Stolen Kisses, stated his intention was to be forward on the mare, however, after commencing awkwardly and when caught wide in the early stages, he elected to go back and find a position closer to the rail. RACE 5: TAB Quaddie Handicap 1500m: An application was received from trainer Mr A Cummings to withdraw Spy Decoder on the grounds that, in his view, the gelding would not handle the track, which was heavier than he had anticipated and had been the subject of a downgrade by the Stewards following late rain after 7.30am this morning. As Spy Decoder had no previous heavy track form, the Stewards acceded and withdrew the gelding at 2pm. Tougher Than Ever jumped away awkwardly and missed the start as a result. Lucky Chappy jumped awkwardly and overraced in the middle stages. When questioned regarding the performance of Beyond Thankful, H Bowman stated that the gelding was quite fractious behind the barriers and, after jumping cleanly and with no pace on, he elected to lead, as he did not want to excessively restrain his mount. He added that Beyond Thankful refused to come back underneath him and that, together with the step up in distance from 1200m to 1500m, second up on a heavy track took its toll and the gelding did not finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination of Beyond Thankful did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller stated that Beyond Thankful never settled when left in front. He undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Beyond Thankful subsequent to the event. When questioned, N Thomas, rider of Mighty Lucky, stated, with its big weight in the heavy track conditions, the gelding did not run out the 1500m journey. RACE 6: MTA NSW Run To The Rose (Group 3) 1200m: J McDonald, rider of Sarajevo, was examined by the Club''s Medical Officer and passed fit to take his rides. Subsequent to his ride in this event, J McDonald was stood down from his remaining rides, acting on medical advice. Passing the 1000m Almalad and Nostradamus came together, as Almalad directed Nostradamus to the rails. Law raced keenly in the middle stages. Near the 200m Nostradamus shifted out briefly, inconveniencing Almalad. When questioned, T Berry, rider of Almalad, stated his mount was never comfortable in the heavy going and dipped near the 100m. He indicated that the gelding would take improvement from the run. A post-race veterinary examination of Almalad revealed the colt to have aggravated superficial abrasions to the off hind cannon. Stable representative Mr M Newnham, when questioned, advised that the healing superficial abrasions to the off hind cannon of Almalad were due to an ins when the gelding was coming off the track some 10 days earlier. He indicated, in his view, Almalad did not finish the race off due to its big weight on a heavy track first up. A post-race veterinary examination of Nostradamus revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. RACE 7: Premier s Cup (Listed) 1800m: On jumping away Circle Of Fame, Canny Ballad and Sabor A Triunfo were all crowded for room between Wish Come True (L Meech), which jumped out, and Celtic Prince, which was taken in after making contact with He s Your Man (H Bowman). The tightening was compounded when Wish Come True, which was awkwardly placed on the heels of Opinion, became turned out across the running of Circle Of Fame, which had to be severely checked. H Bowman was advised that, whilst the initial movement of He s Your Man was due to its contact with Celtic Prince, nevertheless in similar circumstances the Stewards would expect he would make more effort to relieve the tightening. A post-race veterinary examination of Tupac Amaru revealed the gelding had bled in the near side nostril. Trainer Mr J O'Shea was advised Tupac Amaru must gallop 1000m and be subject to inspection by the Stewards before resuming. When questioned regarding the performance of Hoylonny, T Angland stated the gelding was never travelling comfortably in the going. He added when he rode Hoylonny when it was successful at Rosehill on 16 August 2014 the track conditions were good and Hoylonny travelled well on the back of a solid pace. A post-race veterinary examination of Hoylonny did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller stated that the track conditions, he felt, had

4 disadvantaged Hoylonny today and he will look to place the gelding in a similar race on firmer conditions. He undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Hoylonny subsequent to the race. A post-race veterinary examination of He s Your Man revealed the gelding had lost its near fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination of Sabor A Truinfo, which raced three wide throughout, did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 8: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1200m: Paederos slipped behind on jumping and lost ground. Two Blue jumped awkwardly and shortly after the start was crowded by News Alert, which shifted in. Approaching the 600m Murder Of Crows became very awkward when contacted on the shoulder by News Alert, which was taken in by Mount Nebo (App. W Costin). In assessing the incident, the Stewards took into account that Mount Nebo was racing to the outside of the heels of Scandiva, which at the same point shifted in and tightened the ground of Two Blue. App. Costin was, however, advised that it is her responsibility to ensure that runners to her inside have sufficient galloping room. In this incident Masterstroke and Weinholt, which were following, were hampered. Reflectance was held up in the early part of the straight, as it shifted out to improve into clear running. When Murder Of Crows shifted out passing the 300m to improve, News Alert (App. K Jennings) ran out away from that runner, taking Paederos out and resulting in Maximilian being taken across the heels of Cluster and having to be checked and in turn taking Reflectance wider on the track. App. Jennings was reprimanded for failing to react quicker and making an earlier effort to straighten his mount so as to avoid interference. Weinholt was held up making the home turn and inside the 200m was inconvenienced when improving into a narrow run to the inside of Fort Sumter. A post-race veterinary examination of Maximilian revealed the gelding had been galloped on to the nearside knee and had lost its off hind plate. GENERAL: Swab samples were taken from all winners and the following runners: Race 1: Idyllic Scenery, First Seal, Sweynesse (2), Hampton Court. Race 2: Fairyland, Senta Helga, Royal Amati, Cuban Star, Zazparella. Race 3: Forever Crazy, Tohunga, Jo Jo Girl, Khalid. Race 4: Valid Contract, Jemerica, Miss Alibi, Esprit s Choice, Runway Star.
