RB Maurice Jones-Drew needs 121 all-purpose yards to reach 12,000 for his career, joining Fred Taylor (13,632) and Jimmy Smith (12,875) as the only players in franchise history to accomplish the feat. Jones-Drew is looking to eclipse 100 rushing yards in two September games for the first time in his career and is looking for his fifth 100-yard rushing game in the last seven games. A Dwight Lowery 30-yard interception return gave the Jaguars first-and-goal at the Cincinnati two-yard line before they were forced to settle for a field goal. The Jaguars next possession began at midfield and moved to the Bengals two after a first-and-goal at the five, but once again they were held to a Josh Scobee field goal for a 13-7 lead. The Bengals scored on Andy Dalton s second touchdown pass with 14 second remaining in the half to make it 13-13 after Mike Nugent s extra point kick bounced off the right upright. Following eight combined punts by both teams to start the second half, Cincinnati took its first lead at 16-13 on Nugent s 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter despite gusting winds. Three plays later Blaine Gabbert found a broken coverage in the Cincinnati secondary and hit Jason Hill with a 74-yard catch-and-run touchdown to put Jacksonville back on top, 20-16. After being pinned deep in their own territory by a Cincinnati punt, the Jaguars punted from their own six but the Bengals took over at the 23-yard line following a 22-yard punt and five-yard penalty. Cincinnati methodically moved the 23 yards in seven plays, with Bernard Scott scoring on a two-yard run with 1:58 remaining and a 23-20 lead. The Jaguars first turnover came with 1:19 left when a third-and-one shotgun snap sailed past Gabbert and Cincinnati recovered. After turning the ball over on downs with seven seconds on the clock, the Bengals scored on the game s final play, a Jaguars pass completion with multiple laterals that ultimately ended up with Gibril Wilson scoring on a 10-yard fumble return. week three review JAGUARS CLAIM FIRST WIN In a game that featured five lead changes including two in the final minute, the Jaguars claimed their first win under Mike Mularkey and owner Shad Khan with a 22-17 victory in Indianapolis. Maurice Jones-Drew paced the offense with 177 rushing yards including a 59-yard touchdown run on the team s first play of the third quarter, but it was Cecil Shorts 80-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 45 seconds remaining that erased the Colts final lead. The Jaguars outscored the Colts 19 to 3 in the second half after trailing 14-3. Jacksonville scored on its initial possession with a 14-play drive setting up the first of Josh Scobee s three field goals, but the Colts scored touchdowns on their first and last possessions of the first half. Indianapolis marched 74 yards in six plays to take a 7-3 lead on a 40-yard pass from Andrew Luck to T.Y. Hilton, then moved 80 yards in 14 plays to set up Luck s four-yard scoring strike to Mewelde Moore. The Jaguars 10 third-quarter points came on Jones-Drew s 59-yard run and Scobee s 47-yard field goal, which was set up by a Paul Posluszny interception, to narrow the Colts lead to 14-13 entering the fourth quarter. Scobee tacked on a 26-yarder on the Jaguars first series of the quarter to take a 16-14 lead. Indianapolis Adam Vinatieri missed a 36- yard field goal try with 4:45 left before nailing a 37-yarder with 56 second remaining for a 17-16 Colts lead. With no timeouts remaining the Jaguars took possession at their own 20-yard line after a touchback. On the first play Gabbert hit Shorts in stride over the middle and Shorts split the Indianapolis secondary for an 80-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt failed but the Jaguars held a 22-17 lead with 45 seconds remaining. A 40-yard kick return to the Indianapolis 38 put Luck and the Colts in scoring position with no timeouts. On third down Luck hit Hilton with a 36-yard completion to the Jacksonville 26, but the Colts had time for just two final plays which were incomplete passes. The win marked Gabbert s first 4th-quarter comeback victory, and Jones-Drew s touchdown was the 63rd rushing touchdown of his career which broke Fred Taylor s franchise record. Additional Notes The Jaguars overcame a double-digit halftime deficit (10 points) for the first time since Dec. 12, 2010 vs. Oakland (10 points). The Jaguars had two plays of 50-plus yards in a game for the first time since Nov. 14, 2010 against Houston. LB Russell Allen paced the defense for the second straight week, finishing with 15 tackles with one for loss. LB Paul Posluszny had 11 tackles and an interception. DT Terrance Knighton had a team-high four quarterback pressures. Rookie CB Mike Harris registered a team-high three special teams tackles. LB Kyle Bosworth and S Chris Prosinski added two stops. The Jaguars won their third straight game against Indianapolis and four of the last five games in the series. Jones-Drew has scored 14 touchdowns (10 rushing, 3 receiving, 1 return) and recorded eight 100-yard rushing games in 13 career games against the Colts. He has eclipsed 100-plus rushing yards in three straight games against the Colts, five of the last six games, including 346 yards (169, Jan. 1, 2012; 177, Sept. 23, 2012) in the last two outings. ANGER OFF TO SOLID START 2012 third-round draft pick Bryan Anger leads the NFL with 14 punts of 50-plus yards through three games and ranks second in the NFL with a 52.9-yard average on 19 punts. Anger, nicknamed The Banger, ranks fourth in the NFL with a 44.1-yard net average. Anger s 19 punts through three games are the third-most in team history to start a season. He finished with nine punts against Houston in week two for a 51.3-yard average and 42.8-yard net. The nine punts tied for the second-most in team history. On the first play from scrimmage, Gabbert found Shorts on a short pass down the middle and Shorts raced 80 yards for the game-winning score. HEAD COACH MIKE MULARKEY mike mularkey takes reins Mike Mularkey was named head coach of the Jaguars on January 11, 2012. Mularkey has 18 years of NFL coaching experience including two seasons as a head coach and eight as an offensive coordinator. In five of the eight seasons he was a coordinator Mularkey s team went to the playoffs. Prior to Jacksonville, his previous coaching stops were at Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Miami and Atlanta. Mularkey is the fourth head coach in Jaguars history, including Mel Tucker who served as interim head coach for the final five games of the 2011 season. A veteran of 27 years in the NFL, Mularkey played nine seasons as a tight end for the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native attended the University of Florida, where he played tight end before being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1983. Mularkey, 50, spent the past four seasons (2008-11) as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, a team that advanced to the postseason in three of those four seasons. The Falcons produced a 43-21 mark in Mularkey s tenure, the fifth-best record in the NFL. The Falcons produced the top two single-season totals in team history for yards per game during Mularkey s tenure (2008, 2011). In three of the four seasons under Mularkey, the Falcons offense produced a 3,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver and a 1,000-yard rusher in the same year. Under Mularkey s tutelage since 2008, quarterback Matt Ryan ranked seventh in passing yards (14,238) and sixth in touchdown passes (95), and had the league s fifth-lowest interception percentage (2.3). Prior to joining the Falcons, Mularkey spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, as offensive coordinator in 2006 and tight ends coach in 2007. Mularkey served as head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2004-05, leading the club to a 14-18 overall record. In his first season he directed the Bills to their first winning season in five years with a 9-7 record as the club tallied wins in nine of its final 12 games. The 2004 campaign is the last time the Bills have posted a winning record. From 1996-2003, Mularkey spent eight seasons on the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff under head coach Bill Cowher, including the last three years as offensive coordinator. Mularkey spent his first five seasons in Pittsburgh as the club s tight ends coach where he helped mold Mark Bruener into one of the best run-blocking tight ends in the league. Mularkey entered the NFL coaching ranks in 1994 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as quality control coach before he was promoted to tight ends coach the following season. Mularkey began his coaching career in 1993 at Concordia College where he oversaw the offensive line. Three of the head coaches Mularkey was exposed to as an NFL player were Bill Walsh, Bud Grant and Chuck Noll. Drafted in the ninth round by the San Francisco 49ers in 1983, Mularkey played nine seasons in the NFL. He was released by the 49ers at the end of his first training camp and was signed by Minnesota. He spent the next six seasons with the Vikings before being signed as a Plan B free agent in 1989 by the Steelers, where he played for three seasons.
