C 6-1/210 Waldorf, MD (Westlake HS) Head Coach: # 3 Dave Schrage (Creighton 83; 1st season at Notre Dame) Assistant Coaches: # 9 Scott Lawler (Simpson 00), Sherard Clinkscales (Purdue 94) Volunteer Assistant: #28 John Fitzgerald (Chicago 98) GAME NOTES ND holds a 15-8 series edge on CMU but the Chippewas won the games at Eck Stadium in 2004 (4-1) and 05 (10-4) before making things interesting in the 2006 game (an 11-9 ND win)... ND leads the series with Chicago State 25-2 (20-1 since 1990, eight straight wins)... ND sophomore RHP David Phelps was named BIG EAST pitcher of the week, following his 3-hit shutout of USF (10 Ks, BB, HB, 32 BF; 1-0) while junior SS Brett Lilley was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll (12-for-21, HR, 2 3B, 9 R)... Phelps, who did not allow a USF player past first base, currently owns the top ERA among BIG EAST regular starters (0.92) and is one of two pitchers in the BIG EAST top-10 for ERA, strikeouts (6th; 36) and low opp. batting avg. (6th;.215)... he became ND first RHP with a 9-inning solo shutout since J.P. Gagne s 1-0 win over BYU in the 2002 College World Series season (that also was ND s previous 9-inning, 1-0 game)... the Irish suffered a pair of frustrating losses to USF (10-13, 1-9)... ND held a mid-inning lead in the first loss but hurt itself with 8 walks allowed, a pair of hit batters, 3 errors and 4 passed balls (3 costly runs were unearned)... the series finale was tight (2-1) going into the 8th, with ND ultimately batting just 1-for-12 with runners on base and stranding 14 baserunners in that game... the ND bullpen had been fairly solid this season but allowed 13-of-14 inherited runners to score in the losses to USF... last week s 17-9 win over Western Michigan featured the most hits (22) by an ND team since the 2002 College World Series season... the 17 runs are the most by ND in an Eck Stadium game since that 02 season (and most for the Irish in any game since late in the 05 season)... ND s many early-season challenges have included replacing the entire 3-man weekend rotation (a task not faced by at least the 19 previous ND teams) while losing six of the nine everyday position starters from the 2006 team (also unprecedented in a check of the past 19 seasons)... the Irish are in the midst a much-needed 7-game homestand, after spending 22 days on the road (including travel days) during the first month of the season... ND s 2007 highlights include wins over #12 TCU (4-1) and #7 Nebraska (16-6)... ND has lost five times this season when holding a mid-game lead (unearned runs provided the margin in each of those losses)... ND is 7-1 this season when scoring 5-plus runs (loss to USF), 10-3 when outhitting the opponent (2 losses to USF) and 6-1 when hitting a home run (loss to USF)... the Irish own an 20-11 scoring margin in the 1st inning (also 20-12 in the 7th) but the opponents have dominated the key 5th and 6th innings (combined 36-23 edge for the opponents)... Lilley s 60 career time hit-by-pitch already rank 12th in NCAA history (one shy of 9th)... the ND offense has shown its explosive ability several times this season, totaling 13 innings with 4-plus runs (including a pair of 8-run innings and another with 7)... ND ranks 2nd among BIG EAST teams in ERA (3.63) and 4th in batting avg. (.297) but the Irish are 10th in fielding pct. (.952)... the win over WMU included a rare 5-run game from leadoff batter Lilley (4-for-5, 2 RBI, 3B, BB) while freshman A.J. Pollock added five hits from the #2 spot in the batting order (5-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 R, HR)... Pollock is the 30th ND player ever to post 5-plus hits in a game (Alec Porzel and Steve Sollmann share the record, with 6-hit games) Pollock, Lilley ( 05, vs. Cincinnati) and current senior catcher Sean Gaston ( 04, vs. Minnesota) are three of only five ND freshmen ever to have a 5-hit game... Lilley became just the ninth ND player ever to score 5-plus runs in a game (Sollmann also shares that record, with 6)... Lilley and recent All-America 3B Matt Macri ( 04) are the only ND players ever to post 5 hits and 5 runs in different games during their careers.
