Message from the President Clay Meininger, TCC President & COO We are in the process of finishing up our electrical maintenance project here at the Club. On Monday, January 23, the power to the building was switched over to the lines that were relocated under ground. Soon, the unsightly overhead power lines along with the large transformer at the front entrance of the Club will be removed and the driveway will be opened up without the view of power lines! We are truly excited for this project to be completed, as it will beautify our driveway and entrance leading up to our Club! February is here and that means it is time to make your reservation for Valentine s Day in the! Your Culinary Team will be serving a fantastic Valentine s Day Special featuring a five-course meal in addition to our regular dinner menu. We will also be offering valet parking for the evening. Time slots fill up quickly, so be sure to call (785) 354-8561 today and make your reservation to celebrate that special someone in your life! Message from the Chef Shawn Hartwig, Executive Chef I know for most people when they think of February, they think of hearts, chocolates and flowers...but I m thinking of serving an awesome Valentine s Day Dinner here at TCC. Join us on Valentine s Day, Tuesday, February 14, where we will be doing a lovely Valentine s Day special menu with some of the Best Of s since I ve been here at TCC. King Crab Rangoons, Apple Manchego Salad, Trio of Soups, Bacon Wrapped Filet with Truffle Demi and Just Baked Chocolate Molten Cakes with Strawberry Cream and Raspberry Relish. Not only does it sound good, I promise it will taste even better. Please call (785) 354-8561 and make reservations! We will fill up and I don t want you to have to apologize to your spouse! Every month I try to feature one interesting, rare or just plain tasty item to present to the Club as our feature and make a menu to best show it off. This month is no different, we will have Fluke from the cold waters of New England. Fluke is just like it s more famous cousin, Dover Sole. The only difference is Fluke is better. It s a flat, delicate white fish that falls apart as you cook it. And aside from a yummy Minestrone that we finish with some poached Fluke, I m letting you decide how you want your dish prepared. You can pick Italian with Capers and Lemon, French with Parsley and maybe some Butter, or Cajun which is blackened with a Smoky Shrimp Sauce. Worth a trip out to try our February limited edition features! One of my favorite things I get to do at the Club is our Cooking Classes. Not only do I get to know everyone a little better each time, but it s always fun to cook and talk. Even if you don t cook or like cooking...do you like to eat? We typically have a five-course lunch with wine. Did you hear me? That s right, five courses. This month it s all about The Incredible Chicken: 10 Things We Don t Do Enough With Chicken. If you haven t been, it is something to try, and once you try it, I ll get to see you every month! Join us on Wednesday, February 15 starting at 11:30 a.m. We have brunch on the 5th to start the month off with a culinary bang. Every month we change up the menu, and every month it is so fun to see the smiling faces when they are overwhelmed with too many choices of what to eat. We also have the Chef s Tour on February 3, where we are going to the Big Island, so everything Hawaiian, minus the 12-hour flight. Every year at the Club, we as a staff, try to think up new ideas that you as members would enjoy. I ve been cooking for 18 years now, and part of the fun of cooking is you can never know everything, but over the last 10 years or so I ve been studying Sushi which is Japanese, Cantonese 3 cups Chicken which is Chinese, and a little bit of everything in between when is comes to Asian cooking. The region is huge and the different styles from city to city vary so much, I could study it for the next 18 years and still not know it all. All this being said, I am very excited to host a wonderful evening of Sushi and Dim Sim on Wednesday, March 1. My lovely wife, Hayley, will be helping me roll Sushi and we will be bringing in the best Tuna from Hawaii, Ice Cream from Japan, Capo Farms Chicken from Missouri and preparing it Cantonese style. This will be a very fun and memorable night. I hope to see you there! 2 Crews boring underground to relocate electrical power lines leading up to the building. Overhead lines in the driveway and the large transformer at the front entrance will soon be removed.

Golf News Cory Proehl, Head Golf Professional Are your grips worn down or feeling really slick? Now is the perfect time to get your clubs re-gripped before the season starts! Please stop by the TCC Golf Shop and see our professional staff for advice on the right grip for you. Your clubs should be re-gripped at least once a year so that you are able to maintain the proper grip during your golf swing. TCC members are able to start posting scores as of March 1st. If you have any questions on how to post your scores, please see our Golf Staff. We will be more than happy to assist you. You can post scores at the GHIN computer located in the Golf Shop, download the GHIN application or you can go online at www.ghin.com to post your score online. Please make sure you have your GHIN number. Buddy Pal Sign-Ups Call the Golf Shop to register your 2-person team for the 2017 season long match play event. Registration deadline is March 28 and matches will begin April 1. $50 per person will be member charged at the end of the tournament. Golf Tip The short game is 50% of your golf game, with this being said who doesn t want to get better at golf? As golfers, we need to spend more time practicing on putting, chipping and pitching. February s segment will focus on Chipping. I hope the information below will assist you as you begin to think about bettering your short game for the 2017 golf season. The shot description of a chip is minimum air maximum roll Face of the club = Square Path of the club = Slightly inside and straight thru Angle of the club = Slightly steep and descending Chipping Mechanics Set-Up Grip-putting grip or full swing (preference of student) Ball position is on the inside of the non-target foot Stance is slightly open square to the target Weight is slightly on the target foot about 65% - 70% Hands are set in front of the golf ball (club is de-lofted or shut) Chipping Motion Swing motion similar to putting motion Arms and shoulders start and finish the swing along with firm wrists. Club swings back slightly inside the target line and straight thru to the target. Golf Club Selection (Clubs Utilized: 5-SW) Beginners and intermediate golfers should utilize the Same Swing different club theory. This allows newer golfers to create consistency between putting and chipping fundamentals. More advanced players will develop Touch & Feel over time and in most cases will develop 3-4 clubs to chip with. Women s Golf Association Susie Atha, TCCWGA Chairwoman As I write this month s TCCWGA news, there is fresh snow on the ground and the temperature is in single digits. What better time to think about how close spring is and our golf season beginning! And for those of you that might have opened some new golf equipment from Santa, it won t be long before you can put it to good use! There are some important dates that I want to make sure to get on your calendars. Our Annual Meeting is on March 28th at 10:00 a.m. I hope all TCCWGA ladies will attend this meeting where we kick off our 2017 golf season. Our Opening Day will be on April 4th. We will have a meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Locker Room and follow with golf. Guest day is on June 8th, be thinking of someone you could invite to play in our group. Divot Divas will be on June 25th, 26th & 27th and we are looking forward to a great event this year! 3 Touch & Feel Practice Drill Practice chipping to a small circle on the green before changing clubs. Develop the length of swing you will need to consistently reach the green safely. Distance Control Practice Drill Practice hitting 5-10 balls to same target. Change clubs and practice the same technique using same swing length. Clubs will affect the roll of the shot and impact should remain the same. Play the Game Practice Drill Using 1 golf ball, place the ball around the green and practice hitting different shots to different holes. Utilizing the up & down game, the goal is to hole out or achieve 1 chip and 1 putt.

Tennis News Junior Brown, Director of Tennis TENNIS TIP: The Volley I always refer to the volley as the simplest shot in tennis and our job is to keep it that way. The most common error people make when hitting their volley, is they try and do too much! So here is one simple tip to help you make more volleys during your next match. The first thing is to keep it short and simple! So many times when players miss volleys the reason is they are simply trying to do too much with their racquet! Too much swing, too fast of a swing, too much twisting and turning of the racquet! Enough! Pretend like you are simply going to block the ball back into play and that is usually good enough! So remember keep it short and keep it simple. I ll see you on the courts! Call the Tennis Center (785) 354-8565 with any questions. News Kent Morgison, Superintendent February is one of my favorite months of the year. A Super Bowl champion will be crowned: at the time of this writing the playoffs are just beginning, GO COWBOYS! The high school and college basketball seasons are in the heart of their schedules. And, being a short month, it means March; spring, warmer temperatures and golf season are just around the corner. We look forward to a great 2017 at TCC. Once spring does arrive, you will start to notice some visual changes that are an annual occurrence here at the facility. One, and a very welcome sight to all, is the warmer temperatures will begin to awaken the fairways out of the winter slumber and begin to green up. Another sight enhances the colors of TCC as well, but the beginnings of these changes have been ongoing as the snow and ice has been flying. The landscape beds will begin to be filled with numerous flowers and plants throughout the facility as spring unfolds. Are you aware that the overwhelming majority of these ornamental plantings are grown right here, as we are very fortunate to have a fully functional greenhouse on site? While we do have some perennials in certain beds, most of the plants you will see are annuals grown every season. Steve Sidebottom, with some help from Chuck Ross, is busy throughout the winter in the greenhouse propagating the plantings; some from seed and some grown through harvesting cuttings from the previous year. This process, while lengthy and tedious, enables us to fill the course and Clubhouse area with fresh plantings each year. We hope you enjoy the sights as the changing colors will be on the way before you know it. See you soon! 5 Chuck Ross and Steve Sidebottom working in the greenhouse on Spring plantings.
