We Dedicate The 2017 National Californian Show To Al Roland and Carl Lape Al Roland joined the Californian Rabbit Specialty Club in 1974. He was a very active member for 42 years. Always a smile and a Hello! Al was a man that embodied the spirit of raising Californian rabbits. He was called a Breeders Breeder because he was willing to share information with all breeders. He also worked very hard with new breeders, sharing his knowledge and experiences. His bloodline was found in many very successful Californian herds throughout the United States. Al was named Man of the Year in 1997 by the Californian Rabbit Specialty Club. An honor he deserved due to his involvement in the club and being an excellent breeder and representative of the breed. Al was also very active in the club and held positions on many committees and was a Director of the CRSC. Black Bart was his famous herd buck. Al loved talking about that rabbit! In fact, he loved talking about rabbits in general. A great breeder to meet and know. A warm hand shake and a pat on the back was Al s style. Al lived in Virginia. He traveled a lot of miles to attend shows. But he didn t miss an All Cal Show or ARBA Convention. He wanted to meet up with his friends who raised Californians. Thank You To everyone who donated to the Pass the Hat in San Diego. Don t Forget Youth Auction follows the banquet, your donations and support is appreciated!! 4

Many years ago my grandfather picked me up and took me to my very first 4-H/Youth rabbit club meeting. It was very exciting to see all the other kids there learning as i was, about what it meant to show rabbits. What you needed to do to care for them and great fellowship. The person responsible for my first club experience and a great many others in NW Ohio is Carl Lape. Carl is responsible for starting the Van Wert County Youth Club also known as the Bunny Hoppers. I believe it holds the distinction as the very first ARBA sanctioned Youth Club. It lasted all those years until recent times. Nearly any youth during my childhood that started in rabbits in NW Ohio probably was helped by Carl. Carl Became a member of the Californian Rabbit Specialty Club in 1972 and held a lifetime membership along with his lifetime membership to the ARBA. Carl was the member of a great many committee's and was the sweepstakes keeper. If i'm not mistaken he was secretary at one time. Carl organized a national cal show in Van Wert, Ohio. Carl also started the Van Wert County Fruit Growers as well as organized a successful annual festival. Carl Lape passed away March '16 and with that the world lost a great man. I hope that everyone will celebrate the life and accomplishments of a great man. 5
