SHEETED SOMERSET Project The above picture taken from an original painting captures the famous old breed the Sheeted Somerset which unfortunately became extinct during the 20th century. Mr. Andrew Tanner is actively recreating the breed by utilising the same belted breed of cattle that were imported to Somerset via the Netherlands many centuries ago and crossing with appropriate beef cattle in order to produce the native Sheeted Somerset in a beef varaint. This Dutch breed is the Dutch belted "Lakenvelder" and it just so happens that
KI-SAMEN's export manager Reurt Boelema is an authority on the breed. Reurt has not only been a breeder for most of his life but has written a book which graphically details both the history of the breed up to the modern day. The Sheeted Somerset project is now bearing fruit and the first calves are on the ground, below you will see examples of calves that Andrew has bred thus far whilst trialling 4 Lakenvelder bulls from the stud farm of KI-SAMEN bv for a beef variant of the Sheeted Somerset. Cattle Genie Limited are proud to be able to make easily available frozen semen straws from this breed and assist in the selection of bulls either for suitability for grass beef as in Andrew's case or the best bulls for dairy use. The milk globules from Lakenvelder are much smaller than other breeds and are highly suited to cheese making.
