There once was a boy won some ribbons of blue; came home from the fair with a big trophy, too. With a voice glad and proud, he said to his dad, tis the very best year that I ve ever had. Said his very wise dad, Son, I d like to hear, why you think that this was such a very fine year. Why dad, you well know all the prizes I ve won; how I ve come out on top in most things I ve done. Just look at the ribbons that hang on my wall, and think of the money I ve made since last fall. From premium checks and big auction price you can t help but think cash and ribbons are nice. But the man said, My son, you re not thinking right. Blue ribbons, tis true, are better than white; but ribbons will fade and trophies grow old, money s soon spent and fame soon grows cold. The important things, son, are not ribbons or pins, and sometimes it s really the loser who wins. Now here are the things most important, its true, your 4-H experience has accomplished for you. You ve seen how a business meeting is run. This knowledge will help you in years to come. You ve conquered the fear of addressing a crowd. You ve learned how to stand up and talk nice and loud. 1 Patience you ve learned in your project, too, as well as some skills that will always help you. You ve learned the fond feeling it gives you to lend a glad helping hand to a stranger or friend. You ve learned to cooperate with majority rules, to give in with grace and not be the fool who must always have his very own way, be it in club work, in school or at play. You ve learned how to lose without making a beef. You know the judge judges to his best belief. You ve learned how to win without boasting too loud. A kid can lose friends if he s overly proud. These are the things most important to you. You ll remember and use them all your life through. They ll help you become a mighty fine man. They ll do more for you than a prize ever can. Author Unkown Thank you Lindsey Kesterson for sharing this awesome poem. My question to each of you now that Expo, the Verde Valley Fair and the County Horse Shows are behind us, what did you win? 4-H/FFA Expo 2005 a Huge Success! Thank you, thank you to everyone who helped to make this year s 4-H/FFA Expo a huge success. The Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Foundation and the Yavapai County Facilities employees went out of their way to help us with whatever we needed regarding setting up and turning the grounds into an awesome exhibit area for all aspects of this year s show. Ray Robl did an outstanding job of planning and implementing the set up of all the various exhibit areas. I am still in awe of what he and his crew of volunteers were able to accomplish. Ken Vargha spearheaded a very successful effort obtaining donations from various businesses through out the community to cover the costs of the awards presented and other costs associated with Expo. We can t thank these various businesses enough for their support of Expo. Cindy Watkins worked diligently with Dean Fish, Jodi Padgett, Jeff Schalau, the auctioneers and a host of others, to make sure that the auction ran smoothly. To date this was our most successful auction bringing in over $250,000. 2 A special thank to each of our superintendents, Kim Michael/John Cometh-Beef ; Paula Levine-Dairy Cattle; Nancy Robl- Goats; Malia Miller/Ryann Ferguson- Sheep; Rhiannon Cometh/Ray Robl- Swine; Patti Marrs-Small Stock; Shaunla Heckethorn/Jeri Holton/Molly Wisecarver-Dog Show; Marsh Cometh- Horse Show; Craig & Lisa Dotseth- Herdsmanship, Susan Ryant-Indoor Exhibits, Elissa Buesse-Large Livestock- Round Robin and Ramona & Dave Sanders-Bar-b-que. Barbara Killian did a great job of overseeing the Resale process. Nina Hallan in spite of working in Phoenix got the ribbons and other awards ordered. Charlcie Gill thank you for taking the website to the next level and working on the premium book from Oregon. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the parents, leaders and members who pitched in and helped when and where needed. This event would not be possible without the help and cooperation of all of you. Members, if you have not done so already please make sure you write and send your thank you notes. Remember the buyers are paying much more per pound than they normally would because they are supporting you and your efforts. This year my fear was not whether we could pull everything off, but rather, whether we would be able to meet the expectations we had set last year. As far as I am concerned we far surpassed them. Pamela L. Denney Instructional Specialist, 4-H Thank you Lacey Kesterson for sharing this great photo taken during EXPO
