Norwegian Prime Minister to talk terror and refugees with Obama President Barack Obama will welcome the leaders of five Nordic countries on May 13, with extremism and terrorism chief among the topics up for discussion. Also on the table at the US-Nordic Leaders Summit, which comes after a similar meeting when Obama went to Sweden in September 2013, will be the refugee crisis in Europe. Norwegian PM Erna Solberg said the meeting would be a good opportunity for Nordic leaders to display their solidarity. "I look forward to meeting President Obama together with my Nordic colleagues in the White House. The meeting will consolidate the strong ties between our two countries, and between the United States and the Nordics," she said in a statement. "From the Norwegian side, we have long been pushing for a stronger Nordic cooperation, also internationally. The meeting with President Obama will give us a good opportunity to deepen this cooperation with the United States," Solberg added. Joining the Norwegian PM will be the leaders of Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. There will also be a state dinner in the evening hosted by Obama and his wife Michelle ~www.thelocal.no Check Out Your Bookcases! Leading the Way: Innovative Leadership Conference 2016 As you may have read in the February Viking magazine, the International Convention will once again play host to one of Sons of Norway s most forward-thinking and educational events: the Innovative Leadership Conference. This day-long seminar, which is being held on August 24th in Tacoma, WA, is sure to be a premiere event that will help you strengthen your leadership skills! Whether you are interested in helping your lodge succeed or improving your professional leadership skills, the Innovative Leadership Conference will help you attain your goals. This year s event will be both an extension of the last conference by continuing to discuss the topics of leadership and teamwork, but will also educate attendees on new topics, like conflict resolution and strategic planning for lodges. More importantly, everyone who attends will be given implementable tools and techniques, which will deliver tangible results. The goal of this event is to help members strengthen their leadership skills and provide them with the tools they need to succeed, both within Sons of Norway as well as in their professional lives, says Erik Evans, Sons of Norway s Communications Manager. One of the most important elements to Sons of Norway s future success is strong leadership skills at all levels of the organization. Like the overwhelmingly successful 2014 event, this year s ILC will help build strong leaders and, we feel, will make Sons of Norway stronger overall. If you d like to learn more about the event or register today you can visit the 2016 International Convention website at www.sonsofnorway.com/convention. As we approach the International Convention in Tacoma this August, Sons of Norway is inviting all members to showcase their talent and artistry by participating in the 2016 International Folk Art Competition & Exhibition! Exhibit your work or compete in 13 different categories, like Rosemaling, Hardanger embroidery, Norwegian Weaving and Figure Carving! Space is limited, so preregistration is the only way to ensure your spot at this year s event. To preregister, download materials from www.sonsofnorway.com/convention and follow submission directions before August 5 th. Scholarships Scholarship deadline is March 28th! To qualify for a Hovedstad Lodge scholarship, you must be either a member, the child or grandchild of a member, in good standing, who has been active in the lodge at least 3 of the past 5 years. Western Washington Welcomes... The Stoughton Norwegian Dancers is a group made up of Stoughton High School students who perform authentic Scandinavian dances. The group began in 1953, with their first performance in Stoughton's own Syttende Mai (Norwegian Independence Day) parade. Today, they share their talents all across the United States, entertaining young and old and hopefully leaving behind an increased awareness of Norwegian heritage. It will be our pleasure to welcome this talented group to the Puget Sound area for their Spring Tour in March. They will have stops in Seattle, Poulsbo, McChord Air Force Base and two, right here! On March 23rd, they will dance in the morning at Peter G. Schmidt school in Tumwater and in the afternoon, they ll perform at the Panorama City auditorium, which will be open to Sons and Daughters members. That means we ll get a chance to see these fabulous kids up close and personal! I ve seen them before and I can promise you it ll be a fabulous performance.
