PROSE FROM THE PREZ: Our club needs to have some growth to offset some of our membership losses and to get some vital new ideas and enthusiasm. Other clubs have experienced the same sort of shrinkage and graying that we have, and all are facing similar challenges. Look elsewhere in the newsletter for details on a membership promotion which we are going to try. Be sure to invite new friends and acquaintances to our meetings and events. Del Haynes Page 2

November 1, 2001 Membership Meeting Be sure and come to this meeting to meet Donovan Carroll from Alpine Ski Shop in Banner Elk, NC. Some of you may already be familiar with Donovan if you're an avid skier. He'll be giving us the latest ski tips. We're also holding a swap. Rollerblades, golf clubs, ski clothes, anything you can think of. If you have any new or used ski equipment or clothes you'd like to donate to Special Olympics, please bring them. They are always appreciative of our donations. Questions? Call Conni 592-3405 DSS Boys Home The Spartanburg County Department of Social Services is opening a home for neglected and abused boys. They are in great need of household items such as towels, pots, pans, glassware, dinnerware, cleaning supplies and linens for twin beds. They could also use snacks, both solid and liquid. If you can help in anyway DSS would be most grateful. Please bring your donations to the November meeting and we will have a box for collections. Money or a check would also be appreciated. Call me if you have any questions. Conni 592-3405 NOVEMBER MINI-SOCIAL APPLEBEE'S BOILING SPRINGS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH @ 6:30 P.M. We had a great crowd @ Haus Heidelberg for the October Mini-Social. As it's getting colder, let's try a little closer to home. We'll gather in Boiling Springs at the new Applebee's @ 6:30 11/7. Be sure to sign up so that we have the right sized table reserved... You can sign up at the November meeting or contact Marcy @ E-mail: mouseworks52@yahoo.com or call 596-3114. See you there! Page 3

January Crescent Slide Show February Annual Chile Cook-off March Gag Awards (Keep your eyes and ears open) CHRISTMAS DINNER SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1ST LE BARON - E. Main Street 6:30 PM It's hard to believe that Christmas is fast approaching but it's time to put our Christmas dinner night on your calendar and put your name on the sign-up sheet. In order to avoid conflicts with company dinners and ski races & clinics, we're committed to the 1st night of December. Le Baron will be providing us with a wide selection of their most popular appetizers and entrees, including prime rib, which must be signed up for since cooking it takes many hours. All sign-ups need to be completed by NOON, on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16th. You may do so at the November membership meeting or contact Marcy at: mouseworks52@ yahoo.com or call 596-3114. Page 4

Membership News This is another reminder for members who have not renewed their memberships for the coming year. Officially membership expires at the end of September. If you wait too long you will have to pay a new membership fee that is higher than your renewal fee. Don't miss out on the fun for next year. This is your last reminder. Renew now. Three new members have joined the Ski and Outing club last month. Lois and Art Mall moved to the upstate from Atlanta eighteen months ago. They are both from Missouri. Lois and Wanda Meadows went to high school together in Missouri. Both are retired, Art from Firestone and Lois from nursing. They have two children and two grandsons. Neither ski, at least not yet. Both are into golf, bowling, gardening and traveling. Together they would like to see all fifty states. Our other new member is Faye Meares who is originally from Greenville and has been skiing for 25 years. Her best buddy is her daughter Angela who lives in Charleston. Faye has been a member of the Greenville Ski Club for about 15 years and has been on many Crescent trips out west and to Europe. She met Jill Menzel on the last Crescent trip to New Zealand. She's in the banking business and loves to travel and do water sports. Faye heard about the Spartanburg club from our good friends Max Clary and Tom Hambel. What a Deal!! In an effort to increase membership we are offering a super deal for first time members. Beginning November 1 and ending February 28 any 1 st time member prospect who attends the membership meeting or other official ski club function and returns for a second function will be eligible for a 75% discount on membership for the 2001-2002 membership year (single or family membership). If you know of anyone who would be interested make sure that you relay this information. Bring your friends. Hurry, this is only a short time offer. Ted Ted Just a reminder that the Skiliner (Crescent s newsletter) may be downloaded in.pdf (Adobe Acrobat) format from Crescent s Web site at http://www.rtpnet.org/crescent/skiliner.html. (You may also need to download the Adobe Acrobat reader program so you can view the newsletter.) When new issues are published a limited number of copies will be printed and made available at the monthly club meetings. Page 9

ROAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK FRIDAY-SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8-10, 2002 This is the annual value event of the winter. We have reserved 10 cabins at Roan Mountain for Friday and Saturday nights as outlined above. Our club race will be held on Saturday February 9 and discount group lift tickets will be available for all skiers. Mark McCall, our race director, will provide details regarding the race and lift tickets. The accommodations are in the new section of the park. Each cabin has one bedroom and a large loft with a partition dividing the two sleeping areas. Pricing is based on 2 persons per double bed (6 persons per cabin). An entire cabin for the weekend is $200. The cost for individual accommodations is $35 per person for the weekend (based on 2 persons per bed). 50% deposit will hold your place. Balance is due by December 6. Because of their cancellation policy, there will be no exception to the December 6 deadline. There will be a gathering at one of the cabins on Saturday night. Put these dates on your calendar and let s fill up these cabins early. Mike Rogers, Trip Director (H) 864-578-0618 (W) 864-848-6514 Page 10

2002 WESTERN TRIP TO VAIL RESORT JANUARY 26-FEBRUARY 2 VAIL, CO Our western ski trip in 2002 will be tovail. Vail offers acres of skiing from groomed beginner and intermediate runs to the fresh powder of the back bowls. Adjacent to Vail is Beaver Creek, which is a cruiser s paradise. Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Breckenridge are available on a Vail lift ticket. Vail buses run between Vail and Beaver Creek but not to the other resorts. Lodging is at Vail International in 2 BR/2 bath condominiums. These accommodations are in the Lions Head area of Vail with a short walk to the lifts. The Vail International is on a level area with the hot tub equally accessible to the condominiums. Our flight is on American Airlines leaving Greenville/Spartanburg at 7:00 AM and arriving at Vail Eagle Airport at 10:42 AM. We will leave Vail Eagle at 1:25 PM and arrive back in Greenville at 9:05 PM. These times could vary slightly as we get closer to the trip. Bus transportation is included in the price of the trip and for ground-only packages. We have already locked in reasonable group lift tickets for this trip. There will be the usual party (parties?) and an optional private NASTAR race with prizes awarded. The price per person including air is $1,007. The land-only package is $594. Many of you have sign-up sheets and I can provide additional sign-ups. Let s get a good group. Call me for additional information or questions.
