PRESIDENT S CORNER. Yep, it s that time of year again, set those clocks back 1 hour on the 3 rd. It also means ski season is just around the corner for the southeast, and there has been plenty of snow in some parts of the west already. Hope all of you who are on Crescent trips are finalizing your plans now and have great skiing and fun! At last month s meeting we had a wonderfully interesting author to speak on her tales of living and working in Alaska. Sadly, I was very disappointed in our attendance that night. Please come and support your club, we try to offer a variety of programs that will interest the majority of club members. This month will be wine and cheese tasting, along with a silent auction. Alison and her committee have put a lot of work and effort into this, so please come and join us and support the club by bidding on one or many of the wonderful items we have for auction. This is your club and we need your help in supporting it. In November the Spartanburg Little Theatre will be presenting Dial M for Murder, a Hitchcock favorite. A play I hope many of you will attend. December of course brings out the Christmas plays. Hub-Bub is offering Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some). This is a hilarious conglomeration of bits and pieces of so many of your favorite Christmas stories, it is not to be missed. Also in December, Joy Bobo has been kind enough once again to host a Christmas party for SSOC. Hockey anyone? Hopefully we will be visiting Greenville once again to watch the Warriors. Look for more info elsewhere in this newsletter. Mark is happily looking forward to race season. I hope we have some new racers this season and have fantastic runs! If you are interested or know someone who is, have them sign up ASAP. Mike continues to take us to wonderfully delicious restaurants, as I write this I am looking forward to Gerhard s this week, and Oktoberfest. Let s see what he lines up for November. Conni Harrell President, SSOC HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! Page 2
WINE TASTING AND SILENT AUCTION Our next meeting will be on November 7, 2014 at Chapman. We will begin promptly at 7:30, and as usual the room will be open at 7:00. Along with the silent auction to help raise funds for our club that Alison is diligently working on, we will have a wine and cheese tasting. The club will provide the cheese and crackers along with the usual soda selection. As to the wine, it is your chance to bring a favorite to share, or an opportunity to bring a bottle that has been on your shelf, or even bring a bottle you have been dying to try. Look to Alison s write-up for the details of the silent auction. You can enjoy your wine and cheese and fellowship as you place your bids. Come one and come all to support your ski club. Looking forward, we will go to Yosemite with Mike and Barbara Rogers in December and have our annual chili cook-off in January. See you soon!!! Page 3

Dial M for Murder Good old Alfred Hitchcock, he left us with so many wonderful and chilling movies. Now Spartanburg Little Theatre is presenting it in a play form. We all know this movie, unless you are the younger generation (or lived on another planet), and if so, then you need to come and experience the suspense only Hitchcock can provoke. So far I have about 10 members who are participating. Sunday Matinee Chapman Cultural Center, David Reid Theater November 17, 3 PM Cost $25.00 adults, $24.00 seniors (that s the ones who remember M ) Call for tickets at to reserve your seat, or make your reservation in person at the CCC. Afterwards we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant for those that are interested. Looking forward to a large group! Conni 2013 SSOC Christmas Party Once again Joy Bobo has volunteered to host our annual Christmas party at her home. Go ahead and mark your calendars for Saturday, December 21, 6:30 PM. I already predict she will have some delightful and delicious food. Cost will be $20.00 per person, guest are welcome with a member. The price includes all the food and drink! You know you can t get that kind of deal anywhere else. A Chinese auction will also take place as it has always made for a good time and lots of laughs! Look for more information in next month s newsletter. Conni Page 5

OVER 50 ITEMS ON AUCTION! Thursday, November 7 th - bring your neighbors, bring a friend and don t forget your checkbook! Not to worry, this event won t break your bank and it sure will be a lot of fun! The Pricing Committee, in addition to our auction items also decided to have a FOR SALE table, where there will be several items priced to sale as is and there s always OR BEST OFFER! Enjoy the wine & cheese as you roam the hallway & room the bidding starts as soon as we can get the bid sheets on the table and will end about 8:15. I expect there will be some competition for some items at least the Pricing Committee seemed interested in some things folks, you gotta come to the meeting and see what we have! SOLD! P.S. Many thanks to my Pricing Committee couldn t have done it without you AND, it wouldn t have been near as much fun!! P.S.S. Many thanks to you, the club member, who donated an item or more to this auction without that, there wouldn t be this! Alison Page 7

EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY EVER TOLD (and Then Some) This is a most hilarious comedy, (or is it a ludicrous skit?) to be seen since the Tuna, Texas plays. Ted and I saw this play last year with several friends and we couldn t stop laughing all the way to the exit door. It really does touch on every Christmas play you can remember. The show dates are December 6-7, and 12-14, 8 PM. A date will be chosen by the December newsletter, so please give me some input for a date you d like to attend. Tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. Come join us, we re going back it was so good! Conni Page 14

NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
