4 Happy New Year! By Bob Maclauchlan, Hi Rise President Looks like we re going to have another winter where Mother Nature can t make up her mind whether or not to keep it cold all season. Today its 30 degrees with a wind chill with a wind chill in the teens and up to a foot of snow in the snow belt tomorrow we will hit 40 tomorrow and then a couple of days in the 50 s before we get two to three weeks of temperatures in the 20 s with snow. Of course who can predict the weather? The good news is with the exceptions of the two days in the 50 s (January 2 nd & 3 rd ) we will have great conditions and snow for our favorite activity, skiing and boarding. New York will be fully open for the year s first weekend and in the Cleveland area we should be almost all open. So I hope to see you on the slopes in January. We are entering our fifth month in our new meeting hall at the VFW on Vine Street in Eastlake, it s not as large as the Legion was but it is a lot more intimate. I do miss not being able to hang around the bar and talk but as we go through life the only sure thing is change. The Legion gave us the indication they did not want us back as they were going to up the rent, charge us for drinks (more than the VFW) and would charge us for all food. We couldn t have had our Christmas Dinner or pot luck dinner at the old location. Of course we will not be able to enjoy our beer and wine tasting evenings this year either due to the liquor laws that the halls have. The next meeting on January 11 th is Italian Night (another event we couldn t have at the old hall) led by Dennis Rosa and his minions who spend hours preparing a fine Italian feast including pastas, meat balls, sausage, eggplant, venison, salad, antipasto and desert all for $5 plus the regular $3 admission charge. This is always one of our highlight meetings of the year and on top of that is will also be the pre-trip party for the 40 lucky participants going with Hi Rise in 3 weeks. We have arranged two trips to Holimont this year both on Friday s (January 13 and February 17 th ) run by Trish and Kerry. The January trip is coming up fast so please contact them as soon as you get this article to save a spot and make this trip a go. The February trip is our annual Member Appreciation Trip when we pay for you bus if you renewed your membership within the specified time period. We are also doing a weekend trip in early March to Bristol Mountain and staying at The Inn on the Lake. For more details you ll find it in this newsletter. The ski club board that we all elected continues to do a great job of organizing various events for you besides skiing that include golf, dinners of the month, wine trips, canoeing/kayaking, breakfast hikes, ball games, private lakes and many more that I can t think of plus the annual member s banquet in May. If you would like us to try something or you re interested in running something please talk to a board member with your ideas, we need all of the help we can get. Some suggestions we ve had lately include a progressive dinner, pub crawl and happy hours. If you know anyone that would like to join us please bring them to a meeting, we ll pay their first admission and remember you do not have to ski or board because we are a social club as well. Hopefully we ll see more of you on the slopes; at meetings or other various events and that you all have a great 2017.
