PRESIDENT S CORNER As I write this I cannot believe it is almost one month away from the New Year, the perfect time for all you snowboarders and skiers to be at your happiest.

2 PRESIDENT S CORNER As I write this I cannot believe it is almost one month away from the New Year, the perfect time for all you snowboarders and skiers to be at your happiest. And from the weather back in October, it seems like you are off to a good start in what we hope will be plenty of snow. I know our racers are getting anxious to get out there and beat last year s records, and the non-racers are just looking forward to a little good snow too. Don t forget to sign up for the Roan Mountain weekend, February 1-3, there are plenty of great cabins left, just let Carol McCall know as soon as possible. The deadline will be about mid December. This is also our Club Race. Yes, it s a fun race with no experience in racing necessary, so try it this coming year. I want to thank the Board for choosing the DSS Foster program as one of our club charities this season. Also, a special thanks to Ivo Deron, Sam Linder and Ted Mueller for their additional donations. Thank you guys! It s not too late if you d like a buy a gift card, or two, to help with the teenage children in Foster care. The Board also decided to donate to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Care. They will provide holiday dinners for those families who have a loved one on the hospice program, just one less thing for the family to deal with at this time of year. Remember, most of our donations come from our fundraising, which is mainly Music on Main, so don t forget to volunteer when you are asked next year. Thank you. For skiers going to Steamboat, I hope you all have a wonderful trip and land some new speed skills for the upcoming races, or just for your personal best. Have fun, and say hello to Jellyfish Sara for me. The Christmas party is getting well booked at this time. The deadline is Saturday, December 15, to get your name on the list and paid. You can contact me, or sign up at the December meeting. Don t forget there will be the ever favorite Chinese Auction, bring a gift of approximately $10- $15. Get your thinking caps on, and your shopping skills sharpened, and let s see what will be the hot item this year. And the big Crescent trip for 2014 is Lake Tahoe!!!! Once again, Sports America will be handling this tour for us. Lots of great mountains so mark your dates, January 11 18, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a wonderful New Year. 3 CHRISTMAS TRIVIA ANYONE? Test your Christmas Trivia knowledge during our December 6th meeting which will again be held at Chapman Center. The activities will begin at 7:30, and of course, the room will be open at 7:00 PM. We will be using Christmas Trivia Pursuit cards to test your knowledge of Christmas and related topics. There will be a few prizes up for grabs. Because this will be a fun evening, you are invited to bring an appetizer to share and your beverage of choice if the club provided sodas don t suit your fancy. Looking ahead, January, is of course, chili cook-off time. Get out those chili recipes both old ones and new. We have some repeat winners anyone game to find that very special new winning recipe? See you soon. Jan January Mini-Social We'll start the new year with a new restaurant that's opening up in Boiling Springs. It's Branzinos Grill at 1926 Boiling Springs Highway #9. We'll meet at the 6:30 hour on Wednesday January 9th. I'll send out a menu as soon as they post one online. 4 MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS This year s Christmas party will be held again at the home of Joy Bobo. Joy has done an excellent job for us in the past and I know this year will be no exception. She is a wonderful hostess and chef and we are fortunate to have her take on this huge responsibility. Conni Harrell ROAN MOUNTAIN WEEKEND Feb. 1 3, 2013 If you plan to go, you best be getting in contact with Carol McCall ASAP. We only have a few cabins reserved and we have to release what is not reserved by mid December. Carol will work for more cabins if needed. These are lovely log cabins with all the furnishing in the Tennessee State Park of Roan Mt. I understand we may be getting the new ones back this year, so for those of you that have never been, that means a bath and a half! Wooo Wooo! They are located about miles from Beach Mt. just inside Tennessee. See Carol for more info, and don t forget the Club Race to be held that Saturday. People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they should really be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. 12 NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
