AFCON2013 & CHAN 2014 Presentation to the Portfolio Committee on Sport LOC CEO: Mr. Mvuzo Mbebe 19 August 2014
Preparing for a Successful Tournament
Background In August 2011 it was announced that South Africa would host the Orange Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 (AFCON) as well as the Orange African Nations Championship 2014(CHAN). This agreement was reached after the Libyan Football Federation swapped hosting rights with South Africa for AFCON 2013 and CHAN 2014. South Africa was supposed to host AFCON in 2017. With the legacy infrastructure inherited from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa became the obvious choice to host the tournaments.
Background (Cont.) SAFA together with the Government agreed to set up an independent structure/company to run the two tournaments. The Hon. Min. of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, following a cabinet decision, announced the hosting cities as follows: AFCON 2013 Nelson Mandela Bay, ethekwini, Rustenburg, Mbombela and Johannesburg CHAN 2014 Polokwane, Mangaung and Cape Town
