E-NEWS BULLETIN 4-H Calendar November 1 Enrollments due 7 Rabbit Decathlon educational event 17 Club Officer Training for 4-H Members, Leaders and Parents A publication of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County WHAT S NEW Fall 2016 Welcome to the start of another great 4-H year. My first Ulster County Fair was definitely the highlight of my first year as a 4-H Educator. My favorite part of Fair wasn t the animals or even the mint chip milkshakes it was meeting all of you. I am beyond impressed by this community that I now feel a part of. Thank you for the wonderful experience; it was humbling to witness the hard work and selfless efforts of volunteers and 4-H kids. At the 4-H Club Leader Rally this fall we set goals of 65 Public Presentation participants and 225 members with projects entered at Fair. Lofty goals sure, but these two events are considered the cornerstones of the 4-H Club experience and the benefits of each can last a lifetime. So start planning now to prepare an exhibit and create a presentation. - Matt Helffrich December 5 Rabbit Decathlon educational event 9 Award Ceremony at Rosendale Rec. ULSTER COUNTY FAIR 2016 Page 64 Amelia Schlichting, 16 years old of West Shokan NY, was awarded the 2016 4-H Master Showmanship title at this year s Ulster County Fair on Sunday, August 7 th. She qualified for the contest by excelling in Senior Goat Showmanship which allowed her to advance to the final competition with eight peers who chose to compete and who each showed Horse, Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Goats, Sheep, Poultry, Dogs, and Rabbits. Judges score each 4-H Showperson on her/his showmanship skills with each animal, include handling and their knowledge of the species. 4-H Master Showmanship recognizes excellence in showing animals and encourages youth to learn to show a variety of animals. The highest composite score takes the Master Showmanship title. Amelia has been an active member of 4-H since 2011, just finishing her 5 th year in 4-H. She has belonged to both the Ulster Equistars and Small Wonders 4-H Clubs, and has competed at the NYS Fair, bringing home various awards for her animals. This was her 2nd time competing in the Master Showmanship competition, showing that practice (and hard work) pay off!
