Digital monitoring of commercial fishing Geospatial Position Reporting (GPR) Electronic Reporting (E-logbooks) Have your say This is a guide to help permit holders and fishers understand the draft circulars for GPR and E-logbooks www.mpi.govt.nz > consultations > draft circulars on digital monitoring of commercial fishing GPR Fisheries (Geospatial Position Reporting Devices) Draft Circular 2017 E-logbooks Fisheries (Codes and Information) Draft Circular 2017 Closing Date: 21 Aug 2017 Questions or submit your formal feedback? futureofourfisheriesprogramme@mpi.govt.nz 1

GPR and E-logbooks will happen and give more detailed and real time data - What are the opportunities? As Fishery Officers we will have new electronic tools. These help us work more efficiently and ensure compliance with rules and regulations. As scientists we can do better research to support fish stock management. What about you? We would like to hear your thoughts. 2

Reporting may get easier As a commercial fisher, going digital will take time to get used to. Reporting catch may get easier compared to doing things on paper though. A smart E-logbook will help auto-populate details for me. An application where GPR and E-logbooks work together may give me smart information. What else? 3

How do proposed GPR and E-logbooks impact your fishing operations? Permit holders will be responsible for and must ensure that GPR and E-logbooks are in use What kind of GPR and Electronic recording do you use now? What additional information or support would be helpful for you to implement GPR and E-logbook changes? What information or support would be helpful for you to implement these changes? Tell us about ways how we may achieve that. For your method of fishing do you have any operational considerations to share?? 4

Visuals for GPR and E-logbook The following visuals: Are simplified stories Explain proposed GPR and E-logbooks for commercial fishing Cover basic and not all scenarios Questions? futureofourfisheriesprogramme@mpi.govt.nz 5

E-logbook Proposed reporting changes with introducing E-logbooks: Record and report as you go More detailed (fine scale) reporting Start and end positions for all fishing effort All catch taken is reported Non quota species Non fish protected species Disposal Fish below minimum legal size 12

E- Logbook What does it look like for a day trawler from Timaru? Log as you go through your fishing activities. Every fishing activity is stamped with location and time. S C C C C L E C D N L LFR L S C N D E L S C Trip Start record: Enter trip start details when leaving the port. Fish catch report: Enter location/time when shooting net Enter location/time when start bottom depth Enter location/time when end bottom depth Enter location/time when catch is hauled N D E Non-fish species (NFS) report: Enter details. Disposal report: Enter what is returned to sea. Trip End record: Enter trip end details when arriving at the port. L Landing report: Record inventory of what is landed Receive green weight data from a Licensed Fish Receiver (LFR) then update your landing report and send to FishServe.
