Realisation of the Bicycle Network The bicycle network in Munich is 1.200 km long The planned / completed network will be 1.400 km long: a. 500 km of main routes b. 500 km of subsidiary routes c. 400 km distribution network

Bicycle Masterplan May 2009: Munich's city council approves a Bicycle Masterplan New staff in 4 departments dealing with cycling 11 people responsible for cycling in the city administration Triplication of the budget (1,5 4,5 Mio. /year) Goals of the Masterplan: Increase bicycle-share (at least 17% in 2015) Improve traffic safety Definition of infrastructural projects to be realised in the following years Start of the marketing-campaign Integrating cycling into all fields of trafficdevelopment planning

Bicycle Masterplan - Implementation City Council Traffic development plan cycling (VEP-R) bicycle masterplan Implementation order Steering Committee cycling traffic (3. mayor, responsible departments) Committee cycling traffic Evaluation Tasks / work assignment (conceptional processing, top priority topics) working group working group working group Realisation of concrete measures Surveys/ Monitoring Measures working group

Factors of Success - Working Groups Bicycle Parking in the Road Space Optimisation of Bike & Ride Facilities Dep. of Urban Planning Dep. of Public Construction Department of Public Order Dep. of Urban Planning Dep. of Public Construction Munich transport associations (MVV) Munich transport corporation (MVG) P+R GmbH Contraflow cycling in Oneway streets and Bicycle streets Department of Public Order Dep. of Urban Planning Dep. of Public Construction Bottlenecks and Network Gaps Dep. of Urban Planning Department of Public Order Dep. of Public Construction Munich transport corporation (MVG) Difficult Road Junctions Department of Public Order Dep. of Public Construction Bicycle Marketing Department of Public Order Office Mayor Monatzeder Dep. of Urban Planning Dep. of Public Construction Dep. of Health & Environment Dep. of Labour & Economy Winter Routes Dep. of Public Construction Dep. of Urban Planning Department of Public Order Dep. of Health & Environment

Good cycling means and needs broad cycleways as cyclists have very different speeds (10 30 km/h). enough, easy accessible and safe parking facilities in public places. cycling tracks with a smooth surface (safety and comfort). possibility of direct turning in junctions with traffic lights. a good network of well connected routes. an attractive signposting and routing system. professional communication and information. to give cyclists the space they need.

Infrastructural improvements Realisation of a new cycle lane by changing one car lane into a bike lane (Maximilanstr.) Red colour in the junction Improved surfaces for main cycle routes

Infrastructural improvements Bicycle streets Cycle lanes at junctions Contraflow cycling Winter maintenance

Bicycle parking Concept for bicycle parking More than 28.500 bicycle racks in Munich Parking facilities/racks must be: easily accessible able to lock your bike frame directly Avoid damage / vandalism Parking facilities at PT-stops, public buildings, subcentres, etc.

Bicycle parking Bike & Ride Covered Bike & Ride parkings with sophisticated design for a better integration in the urban context

Bicycle parking Bike & Ride Pasing station : new bicycle garage for 754 bicycles in 2012 Pasing station : additional new bicycle shelters for 380 bicycles in 2012

Bicycle parking Statutes and Manual - 2012: City council approved statute about obligatory bicycle parking facilities for all new or renovated buildings. The number, size and character of the installations are specified according to the already applied statutes of car parking. - Bicycles well placed: Manual Room for Bikes Information about how to improve the parking situation for existing buildings.

Automatic Bicycle Counting Seven spots in the city where cyclists are counted the whole year Numbers show the continuous increase of cyclists in Munich Important for monitoring and evaluation of the Bicycle Masterplan

Masterplan Bicycle Traffic in Munich Evaluation 2013 Additional Bicycle stands in the road space (overall 2,000 until 2015) Sheltered Bicycle stands in residential areas Additional sheltered Bike+Ride cycle stands (overall 400 until 2015) (overall 2,000 until 2015) 696 700 1300 1304 400 Oneway roads opened for Contraflow cycling Signposted Cycle Network (overall 320 km until 2010) (overall 300 until 2015) 7 293 320 remaining offen completed umgesetzt

Conclusion: What we learned - The target achievement exceeds the expectations - With the propagation of cycling in all population groups also the demands are increasing - The competition in the usage of public of space is the crucial restraint for an area-wide cycling promotion - It's more easy to obtain a political agreement about strategies than for conrete measures

Forecast - Does the trend for more cycling virtually sells itself"?! How can the infrastructure keep up with the trend? - Redensification, the prevention of air pollution, noise prevention Increase of the cycle mode share and the kilometres travelled/ length of trips Cycle highways, covered bicycle parking, winter maintenance - Demographic change /capacity constraint for the PT Integrated close range mobility concepts under inclusion of PT Handling of conflicts/competitions within the environmentally friendly modes of transport (public space, finance, lobby groups)

Thanks a lot for your attention!
