STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club ROYAL RANDWICK RACECOURSE Saturday 16 April 2016 Weather: Fine Track: Soft (5) Rail: +9m 1600m to WP, +5m remainder Penetrometer: 5.29 STEWARDS: M F Van Gestel (Chairman), R P Murrihy, G T Rudolph, D M Greer and cadet J A Shultz (jl) Supplementary Reports: WARWICK FARM Wednesday 13 April 2016 Race 1: TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap 1200m Earth stable representative Mr C Duckworth reported that the colt had pulled up well, had scoped free of abnormality and the stable will continue on with its preparation. RANDWICK TRACKWORK Saturday 9 April 2016 The Dreamweaver trainer Mr J Thompson was interviewed in respect to the two-year-old colt suffering a catastrophic breakdown involving a displaced spiral fracture to the right humerus when working on the dirt track. Evidence today was taken from Mr Thompson, who indicated The Dreamweaver had no pre-existing conditions or was not receiving any treatment prior to 9 April 2016. Evidence was taken from Deputy Chairman G Rudolph, who indicated he had inspected the veterinary treatment records on Tuesday, 12 April 2016, where there was no evidence of any veterinary issues with the colt. In addition, Dr C Suann said there was no evidence of any pre-existing condition and on that basis the inquiry was concluded when the Stewards found the colt had suffered a catastrophic breakdown, namely a displaced spiral fracture to the right humerus. LATE RIDING CHANGES: As App. W Costin was indisposed due to injury Stewards permitted the following riding substitutions: Race 1 Race 9 App. L Grace on Dashie de Luxe. App. K Nisbet on Great Esteem. RACE 1: TAB Highway Handicap 1200m Dylan's Dynasty slow to begin. Raced keenly throughout middle stages and for some distance near the 1600m was restrained to avoid the heels of Chappie. Held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and approaching the 200m was steadied when disappointed for a run between Chappie and Tiger By The Tale.

Dashie De Luxe slow to begin. Held up making the home turn and did not obtain clear running until near the 250m. Tiger By The Tale jumped awkwardly and shortly after was hampered when bumped by La Bella Rouge, which shifted in. Rider B Shinn stated that the gelding was inclined to overrace in the middle stages and particularly near the 700m when the pace of the event slackened. He added, when making the home turn, Tiger By The Tale was held up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Strangerinparadise but, after obtaining clear running on straightening, Tiger By The Tale was somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Williams concurred with the views offered by B Shinn and indicated that it was the intention to have the gelding more forward than it was positioned today. Mr Williams undertook to report back on the future race plans for Tiger By The Tale. Chappie held up for clear running until approaching the 200m. Touch Sensitive rider T Clark indicated that, in his view, the filly raced like a tired horse and may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be in season and to have an abrasion to the off-hind bumper. Trainer Mr R Northam advised Touch Sensitive would now be spelled. RACE 2: E-Group Security Sprint 1200m Press Report slow to begin. Ammirata held up until the 250m Mohave near the 200m was steadied when crowded by Ryker (B Shinn) which, after being brushed by Santa Ana Lane (H Bowman) when that runner shifted in, then shifted in away from Santa Ana Lane. Both B Shinn and H Bowman were advised to exercise more care. Klammer near the 200m was inconvenienced when crowded by Mohave. Lady Jivago in the straight was inconvenienced when Press Report shifted out. Near the 100m was steadied to avoid the heels of Press Report (B Avdulla), which continued to shift out under riding. B Avdulla was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. Ryker close to the finish could not be fully tested when awkwardly placed on the heels of Santa Ana Lane. Lucky Can Be rider T Clark advised the filly travelled strongly in the run and, after initially responding to his riding in the early part of the straight, shortened stride noticeably behind and, consequently, he eased it down near the 200m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare, which was eased down in the straight, to be acutely lame in the near-hind leg. Lucky Can Be was transported to Randwick Equine Centre for specialist veterinary care. When interviewed, trainer Mr R Quinton stated that there had been no veterinary issues with Lucky Can Be in this preparation or leading up to this race. RACE 3: TJS Frank Packer Plate (Group 3) 2000m Manhattan Son shifted a plate in the tie-up stalls and had to be replated.

Gold Ambition slow to begin. Inconvenienced near the 250m. When questioned regarding the poor performance, rider T Angland stated, as notified to the Stewards, his instructions were to race in a forward position. He added that, whilst he had to make some use of his mount to get up outside the leader in the middle stages, the gelding was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Zasorceress slow to begin and shortly after was crowded by Gold Ambition, which shifted in. Torgersen overraced in the middle stages. Briefly inconvenienced approaching the 300m when Old North shifted in. Asinara briefly held up in the early part of the straight and near the 350m, when being shifted to the outside of He's Our Rokkii, made contact with Tatoosh. Aurora's Star lost its off-hind plate in running. RACE 4: Kari J H B Carr Stakes (Group 3) 1400m Denmagic slow to begin and then hampered when crowded by Denpurr, which shifted in. Muzyka overraced in the early stages and approaching the first turn ran out when being steadied from the heels of Cartier Rock. Lady Sniper raced keenly in the early stages. Pearls rider J McDonald explained that he had been instructed to take up a forward position on the filly and anticipated racing just behind the leaders. He added that his mount was a little slow to begin and, despite his efforts to take up a forward position, the filly did not respond to his urging in the early stages and, consequently, settled further back then he had intended. J McDonald said that Pearls was then unsuited by the moderate tempo throughout the early and middle stages and making the home turn he initially followed Tap This, but was held up when that runner could not improve. He further stated he then elected to shift to the outside of Heartlings, but had difficulty improving into that run when Heartlings laid out, which resulted in Pearls having to shift out further, taking Dawnie Perfect and Cartier Rock wider. He added, once into clear running, Pearls finished the race off solidly. RACE 5: Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (Group 1) 1600m Jaws Of Steel crowded on jumping when Obscura shifted out. Overraced in the early stages. Near the 200m was steadied when crowded for room between Pop and Crown Him (B Shinn) which, after initially being bumped by Faraway Town (J Ford), which shifted in, shifted in away from that runner. Both B Shinn and J Ford were advised in similar circumstances to exercise more care. In incident Jaws Of Steel struck the heels of Pop, blundered badly and became unbalanced. Divine Prophet on jumping crowded by El Sicario, which shifted out. Rider D Dunn reported on a number of occasions leaving the 1000m his mount blundered on a softer section of the track.

El Sicario overraced badly in the early and middle stages, before weakening. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-hind pastern. Obscura a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 6: Hall Mark Stakes (Group 3) 1200m Charlie Boy rider B Shinn stated he had intended to be more forward on the gelding but, after jumping awkwardly and then being crowded between Speak Fondly and Artlee, which shifted out, he then settled further back than he had anticipated. He added, under its top weight, Charlie Boy then found it difficult to make up its ground in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Artlee overraced throughout the early and middle stages and for some distance near the 600m got its head up when being restrained from the heels of Knoydart. Target In Sight M Bell (Artlee) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that between the 400m and the 200m he persisted in endeavouring to force a run between Bachman and Target In Sight where there was not sufficient room to do so, resulting in Artlee jostling Target In Sight for some distance and both runners becoming unbalanced. M Bell's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday, 19 April 2016 and to expire on Tuesday, 26 April 2016, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account M Bell's very good riding record. Speak Fondly a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg and displaying a poor post-race recovery. Stable representative Mr A Bott was asked to provide a veterinary clearance for the filly prior to its next start. RACE 7: Schweppes All Aged Stakes (Group 1) 1400m Black Heart Bart held up for clear running in the early part of the straight. Malaguerra when questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, B Shinn stated his instructions had been to lead and, after commencing well, he was able to hold the lead in the early stages. He added that when Perignon improved to his outside he was of the view that his mount was travelling at its top and for this reason, although he was aware the tempo was only moderate, he was content to allow Perignon to cross his mount to obtain cover, similar to when he rode Malaguerra in the Star Kingdom Stakes on 26 March 2016. B Shinn further stated that, after obtaining cover, he was then held up in the early part of the straight behind Goldstream when that runner commenced to weaken and it was not until the 200m that he was able to shift to the outside of that runner to obtain clear running. He added, in all the circumstances, the run had some merit. A post-race veterinary examination revealed lacerations to both forelegs and a laceration to the tongue. Co-trainer Mr L Freedman confirmed the instructions were to lead, however, in the circumstances he was not critical of B Shinn's decision to allow Perignon to cross. Press Statement when questioned regarding his riding of the colt, H Bowman advised that he had anticipated taking up a forward position but, after commencing only fairly, he was caught wide in the early stages. He added that he had contemplated going forward and crossing to the lead, however, when Goldstream, which was positioned to his inside, was overracing, he was reluctant to attempt to go forward, as he would have had to make too much use of his mount to cross that runner. H Bowman further stated that, although obliged

to race three wide from the 800m, Press Statement travelled comfortably and, after initially improving making the home turn, was, in his opinion, disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-hind fetlock. Trainer Mr C Waller advised that Press Statement had pleased him in the lead up to today's event and, in his opinion, although obliged to cover additional ground, was somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. Mr Waller undertook to report back on the future race plans for the colt. Goldstream a post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse had been galloped on to the near-hind leg. Perignon a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor postrace recovery and a cardiac irregularity. Trainer Mr G Ryan was advised the filly must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards and he must also furnish a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG prior to Perignon racing again. RACE 8: Sharp Japan Racing Association Plate (Group 3) 2000m Index Linked slow to begin. Guardini jumped awkwardly. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight and near the 200m shifted in abruptly, resulting in its rider, H Bowman, having to stop riding and straighten his mount. Beyond Thankful overraced throughout the early and middle stages. Held up making the home turn and then did not obtain clear running until the in the early part of the straight. Near the 200m had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Hippopus, which was weakening, and Weary, which shifted in slightly. Rudy held up in the early part of the straight and near the 250m was inconvenienced when Casino Dancer (T Huet) shifted out. T Huet was advised to exercise more care. Rudy then had further difficulty obtaining clear running and inside the final 100m could not be fully tested when again awkwardly placed close to the heels of Casino Dancer. Messene rider D Dunn reported that his mount did not handle the soft track conditions, particularly near the 1000m whereby the gelding commenced to struggle. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Sadler's Lake rider B Shinn stated he was able to take up a trailing position behind the leaders but, in his view, the gelding was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr C Waller advised the gelding, which weakened over the concluding stages, will be spelled. Casino Dancer a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare shifted its near-hind plate and was displaying a poor post-race recovery. Weary when questioned regarding racing more forward, C Reith stated his instructions were to take up a midfield position, however, from his wide draw, when Weary commenced well, he elected to allow his mount to settle more forward, rather than being caught wide. Trainer Mr C Waller confirmed the instructions issued.

Terrubi rider B Avdulla stated he was instructed to ride the horse quietly and, after taking a trailing position on the back of the winner, Guardini, his moutn became unbalanced near the 700m when Guardini shifted in. He added from this point Terrubi failed to travel, did not respond to this riding and, consequently, he eased it down in the straight. Trainer Mr K Lees expressed disappointment with today's performance and indicated he would now consult with the owners in respect to the immediate racing future of Terrubi. Mr Lees was advised Terrubi must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start and also he must tender a veterinary clearance for the horse. RACE 9: TAB Rewards Royal Randwick 100 1400m Religify slow to begin. Tales Of Grimm inclined to overrace throughout the middle stages. Shoreham held up for clear running in the early part of the straight. Nancy when questioned regarding racing more forward today, co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden stated it was his intention to take up a midfield position, however, from the inside draw, after commencing well, the mare settled more forward than intended and, as a result, was inclined to race a little keen in the middle stages.
