7.0 PROCEDURE; Inspect the condition of the nuts and bolts before proceeding. It may be a safety hazard to tighten bent and badly corroded ones. Determine what equipment, PPE, tools, and parts are required and available. Access and assemble tools, procedures and equipment. Backseat the valve by opening it completely. In the fully open position the stuffing box is sealed off from the process. This can stop leakage in the event of a packing failure if the valve is not damaged, worn or corroded. Turn each nut about 1/4 revolution with a box end wrench. Take valve out of back seat position. Check for leaks. If it still leaks, repeat the procedure. Backseat the valve, close down packing gland nuts and turn another 1/4 revolution. Take valve out of back seat position and check for leaks. If leaking does not stop after several attempts, valve may need to be replaced. Do not bottom out the packing gland follower. Clean up the work area. 8.0 PROCEDURE DEVIATION Deviations from this standard operating procedure must be authorized using the Management of Change procedure. Deviations must be documented and documentation must include the relevant facts supporting the deviation decision. Tighten Packing Gland Nuts 2012-01 Page 5 of 6
