AN INTRODUCTION TO MICHAEL ROHRMANN "For successful German trainer, judge and international clinician Michael Rohrmann horses always come first. He teaches the rider to think for themselves. In a hugely supportive and in a realistic way Michael helps riders to achieve their goals in a timely manner." Such is the experience of Saskatchewan rider/trainer Lauren Layton-Bamford, winner of both the Prix St. George and Intermediare 1 with Don Arminio at a June 2009 Dressage Winnipeg competition. Lauren was Michael's first English Trainer C in Germany where he coached her for competition and successful completion of Trainer B in both Dressage and Jumping. The Canadian equivalent to Trainer B is Competition Coach Specialist. Michael has mentored many riders and trainers from all over the world. His experience includes basic training of both horse and rider through to Grand Prix in both dressage and show jumping as well as in eventing from entry to two star level. Michael Rohrmann will be teaching a clinic in the Oakbank/Birds Hill Park area May 8-10 2012 and coaching riders from that clinic at the May Dressage Winnipeg show May 11-13 2012. PREVENTION IS PARAMOUNT Equine Guelph offers Vaccination Equi-Planner Springtime! A time for renewal, growth -- and it's breeding season. Unfortunately, mares are not the only things being bred. Disease should always be a concern if you are a horse owner and spring serves as a reminder to check your horses' vaccination records. Equine Guelph's Vaccination Equi-Planner, sponsored by Merck Animal Health, is a useful tool designed for horse owners to generate personalized immunization schedules for their horses. DID YOU KNOW Thoroughbreds and Arabians are known as thin skinned relating to how fine and sensitive their skin is. In the naming of Arabian horses "ibn" means son of and "bini" means daughter of. The Arabian horse is the national symbol of the United Arab Emirates. The Arabian horse can have 17 ribs; 5 lumbar vertebrae and 16 tail vertebrae which is in each case less than other horse breeds. The earliest imports to be registered in the American Arabian Horse Club Stud Book were the stallions *Leopard 233 and *Linden Tree 234 in 1879 as a gift to General Ulysses

Grant from Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The first Russian bred Arabian to be registered in North America was *Gouneiad 21 in 1893 who was owned by Grand Duke Dimitry and was shown at the Worlds Fair in Chicago. In 1934, the first importation of Arabian horses from Spain to North America was accomplished by J.E. Draper. The first regular purebred Arabian race with paramutuel and from a starting gate was run in Canada in 1981 in Vernon, B.C. under the jurisdiction of the B.C. Racing. R.D PAYNE EQUINE SCHOLARSHIP In 2012, the Red River Exhibition Association's Board of Directors renamed the Red River Exhibition Association's Equine Scholarship, the R.D. Payne Equine Scholarship, in honour of former director Rick Payne. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to individuals actively involved in the equine community whose passion for the equine sport and dedication are evident in their competitive activities and contributions to their chosen equine discipline.
