INTRODUCTION This report summarizes the results from the benthic macroinvertebrate samples collected for the Orange County Water Authority (OCWA) in 00. This data is part of an ongoing assessment of Orange County stream communities since 004. For a complete project overview, history, rationale, background, project goals, methods, key terminology and interpretation of 004 to 009 data, see the OCWA Water Quality Biomonitoring Project Summary Report for Years 004 009, available at the OCWA website (http://waterauthorityorangecountygov.com). Seventeen kick and three multiplate samples were collected in 00 at 0 previously sampled locations (Figure ). The sites were re-evaluated to determine if water quality changed (improvement or decline in Biological Assessment Profile (BAP) score by at least ± 0.5 points) from its condition documented in previous years. Figure. Map of 00 sampling locations in Orange County, NY, including Biological Assessment Profile (BAP) and change in BAP value relative to the most recent assessment (004-009).

SUMMARY OF RESULTS Biological community metrics indicated Orange County stream water quality ranged from severely impacted to non impacted in 00 (Table ). Biological Assessment Profile (BAP) scores ranged from 0. (Station 489_006), Wallkill) to 9. (Station 00_00, Neversink River) (Table ). BAP scores improved for 50%, declined for 5%, and did not change appreciably for 5% (Table and Figure ). BAP scores improved at the following sites: Neversink River (00_00), Otterkill (489_00), Seeley Brook (89_00), Cromline Creek (089_008), and Ramapo River (5089_00) (Table and Figure ). The most remarkable improvement occurred at Neversink River (00_00): the BAP was categorized on the low end of slightly impacted in 005, but 00 BAP results indicated non impacted conditions. The Otterkill (489_00) BAP score improved by.9 points from 005 to 00, modifying the water quality from moderately to slightly impacted. The Seeley Brook (89_00) BAP score improved by.64 points, adjusting the score to the high end of the slightly impacted category. The Cromline Creek (089_008) BAP score increased by.05 points from 009 to 00; and approximately points higher than the BAP scores in 004 and 005. The Ramapo River (5089_00) BAP improved by 0.86 points from 007 to 00, and the BAP score has been steadily increasing for this site since 006. Although the change in BAP was less than 0.5 points, the Rio Grande (089_006) BAP improved by 0.49 points; water quality conditions have continued to improve since 005. The most dramatic decline in BAP score occurred at Wallkill (489_006); the BAP dropped 4.6 points between 009 and 00, from almost slightly impacted to severely impacted. This site had been improving steadily from 005-009 (Table and Figure ). The Wallkill (489_005) station BAP score declined by.5 points, changing the impact category from moderately impacted to severely impacted. Although not as dramatic, this site experienced a similar decline between 006 and 007. Moodna Creek (489_0) BAP score declined by.86, adjusting the water quality assessment from slightly to moderately impacted. The Moodna Creek (489_00) station BAP score decreased by.9 points, changing the water quality from non to slightly impacted. The Moodna Creek (4800_0) station BAP score dropped 0.89 points; the impact category remains slightly impacted. The Satterly Creek (89_00) last assessed in 004, BAP score declined by 0.8 shifting the station into the moderately impacted water quality category. The Quassaic Creek (4800_0) BAP score decreased by 0.7 from 009, however, the impact category did not change and the BAP results are similar to the previous three assessments. The Wallkill (5489_06) BAP score fell 0.68 points from 009; the impact category shifted from slightly to moderately impacted. The Monhagen Brook (5600_005) BAP score declined by 0.65 changing the water quality impact category tfrom slightly to moderately impacted. Unnamed Tributary (4800_00) BAP score decreased by 0.5 point between 007 and 00; this change was just enough to change the impact category from slightly to moderately impacted. Changes in water quality at several sites, as determined by BAP, may have been a consequence of 00 flow rates. Average flows were lower than in previous sampling years, based on provisional daily data from USGS gauging stations within or near Orange County. The reduced base flows may have amplified the impact of waste water treatment plants (point sources) located upstream of some stations, lowering the BAP score. Additionally, those sites affected primarily by nonpoint source inputs may have shown improvement in BAP due to less runoff impacting water quality. Further investigation of the sub-basins longitudinally will help to better understand and identify such impacts. 4

Cyanobacteria blooms were observed at all three Wallkill stations; the impact of cyanobacteria blooms to aquatic insects is not well documented, however blooms may increase the biological oxygen demand during night time respiration and reduce dissolved oxygen to critical levels. BAP score changes at the remaining stations were not remarkable (less than 0.5 points), indicating steady water quality condition for the following sites: Woodbury Creek (489_008), Black Meadow Creek (089_009), Otter Creek (489_00), Rio Grande (089_006) and Silver Stream (4800_0). Impact source determination (ISD) values indicate that most stations are likely affected by nonpoint source nutrients; some stations may be additionally affected by toxic, complex, or impoundment sources (Table ). ISD values for Neversink River (00_00), Woodbury Creek (489_008), and Seeley Brook (89_00) indicated natural sources of impact. The Rio Grande (089_006) station ISD value indicated that toxins were a likely source of impact; and ISD results for the Quassic Creek (4800_0) and Moodna Creek (4800_0) stations indicated complex and impoundments to be likely sources of impact. The ISD values for Idlewild Brook (489_0) were inconclusive. Although the land use in Orange County is primarily forested, according to the 00 National Land Cover Data (NLCD), the land surrounding the majority of the stations surveyed was developed and agricultural land. Also, specific conductance values were >00 µs/cm for all stations except Neversink River (00_00); these conditions were likely related to low baseflows due to low precipitation during 00. 5
