ROPES #1 Securing a Ladder to an Immovable Object Subject: General Section 101 NFPA 1001 5.1.1 Firefighter I OBJECTIVE The firefighter trainee shall secure a ladder using a proper technique. The firefighter trainee shall properly secure equipment to an immovable object with the appropriate securing device chosen. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. INSTRUCTIONS procedures for achieving the objective While wearing full protective clothing and a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), you shall select an appropriate securing device and properly secure the ladder, at either the base or tip, to an immovable object. You will be required to complete the mandatory steps while performing this skill. You will begin on my instruction to start. You will have 4 minutes to complete this skill. The skill will end when you state to me that you have completed all of the identified steps. Do you understand these instructions? EXAMINERS NOTE The firefighter trainee will not be allowed to review the performance steps at the time of testing. PREPARATION & EQUIPMENT Rope Rope hose tool/belt Straight ladder (12 or 14 ft.) The firefighter trainee shall accomplish the skill wearing "FULL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING FOR STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTERS" to include helmet, gloves, coat, trousers, boots, and SCBA. Firefighter trainee will not don face piece or hood.

The firefighter trainee shall properly secure equipment to an immovable object with the appropriate securing device chosen. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. POSSIBLE Securing the ladder tip: POINTS TEST RETEST a. Checks proper climbing angle 1 b. Secures body to ladder utilizing the proper leg lock method 1 c. Secures the rope or hose rope tool to the tip of the ladder 1 d. Secures the rope or hose rope tool to an immovable object 1 e. Ties appropriate knot on ladder such that when ladder is vibrated, the knot does not loosen or allow the ladder to pull more than approximately six inches (6 ) from the immovable structure 1 f. Completes the skill in the allotted time 1 TOTAL POINTS: 6 OR Securing the ladder base: POSSIBLE POINTS TEST RETEST a. Checks proper climbing angle 1 b. Secures the rope or hose rope tool to the base of the ladder 1 c. Secures the rope or hose rope tool to an immovable object 1 d. Ties appropriate knot on ladder such that when ladder is vibrated, the knot does not loosen or allow the ladder to pull more than approximately six inches (6 ) from the immovable structure 1 e. Completes the skill in the allotted time 1 TOTAL POINTS: 5 Points needed to pass: 5 OR Points needed to pass: 4

ROPES #2 Rope Inspection & Maintenance Procedures Subject: Prevention, Preparedness, and Maintenance Section 101 NFPA 1001 5.5.1 Firefighter I OBJECTIVE The firefighter trainee given an adequate length of fire service rope, shall demonstrate the proper technique of inspecting the rope and verbalizing at least five (5) indicators of damage that are characteristic for the type of rope selected. The trainee shall describe the proper procedures for cleaning and storing selected rope. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. INSTRUCTIONS procedures for achieving the objective You shall demonstrate the proper technique of inspecting fire service rope and verbalizing at least five (5) indicators of damage that are characteristic for the type of rope selected. You shall describe the proper cleaning and storage procedures of the selected rope. You will be required to complete the mandatory steps while performing this skill. You will have 4 minutes to complete this skill. You will begin on my instruction to start. The skill will end when you state to me that you have completed all of the identified steps. Do you understand these instructions? EXAMINERS NOTE The firefighter trainee will not be allowed to review the performance steps at the time of testing. PREPARATION & EQUIPMENT 10 25 feet of rope (synthetic/natural) The firefighter shall accomplish the skill wearing a helmet.

FIREFIGHTER I: ROPES #2 Rope Inspection & Maintenance Procedures Candidate: Examiner: School: Test Site: Notes: The firefighter trainee given an adequate length of fire service rope, shall demonstrate the proper technique of inspecting the rope and verbalizing at least five (5) indicators of damage that are characteristic for the type of rope selected. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. POSSIBLE POINTS The Candidate: a. Inspects rope for damage and verbalizes at least 5 elements of rope degradation (Elements could include: softness, crusty spots, stiffness, brittleness, nicks, cuts, dirt, mildew, heat sears or discoloration, fuzziness, mushy spots, sheath sliding, lumps and/or depressions) 1 b. Examines the inner component by twisting the rope or feeling for bunching and thinness 1 c. Verbally explains that he/she would tag and remove from service any severely damaged rope 1 d. Verbally explains cleaning procedures 1 e. Verbally states that rope needs time to air dry completely 1 f. Verbally states an additional inspection is necessary after drying 1 g. Verbally states proper storage of rope 1 h. Because of various acceptable sequential steps in completing a finished knot, the examiner will primarily evaluate the finished product for accuracy by comparing the knot to reference materials. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. INSTRUCTIONS procedures for achieving the objective You will select the type and length of rope which will be adequate to meet this skill. You will verbalize five (5) potential elements of rope degradation. You shall demonstrate tying a becket bend (or sheet bend). I will primarily evaluate the finished product for accuracy by comparing the knot to reference materials. You will also verbally identify the working, standing, and running sections of the rope. You will have 4 minutes to complete this skill. The skill will begin on my instruction to start. The time will stop when you inform me that you have completed the skill. Do you understand these instructions? EXAMINERS NOTE The firefighter trainee will not be allowed to review the performance steps at the time of testing. PREPARATION & EQUIPMENT Two adequate lengths of rope of different diameters. The firefighter trainee shall accomplish the skill wearing a helmet.

FIREFIGHTER I: ROPES #3 Forming Elements of a Becket Bend/Sheet Bend Candidate: Examiner: School: Test Site: Notes: The firefighter trainee shall demonstrate tying a becket bend (or sheet bend). The trainee shall select the type and length of rope which will be adequate to meet the provisions of this skill. The trainee shall verbally identify five (5) potential elements of rope degradation. The trainee shall verbally identify the working, standing, and running sections of the rope. Because of various acceptable sequential steps in completing a finished knot, the examiner will primarily evaluate the finished product for accuracy by comparing the knot to reference materials. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. POSSIBLE The Candidate: POINTS TEST RETEST a. Forms a bight in one of the ends to be tied (bight is formed in larger diameter rope) and passes the end of the second rope through the bight 1 c. Brings the loose end of the second rope around both parts of the bight 1 d. Passes the loose end of the second rope under its own standing part and over the bight 1 e. Draws the knot down snug, checking for slippage 1 f. Verbally identifies working, standing and running sections 1 g. Completes the skill in the allotted time 1 TOTAL POINTS: 7 Points needed to pass: 5

The trainee shall verbally identify the working, standing, and running sections of the rope. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. INSTRUCTIONS procedures for achieving the objective You will select the type and length of rope which will be adequate to meet this skill. You will verbalize five (5) potential elements of rope degradation. You shall demonstrate tying a bowline knot with safety on a smoke ejector. I will primarily evaluate the finished product for accuracy by comparing the knot to reference materials. You will also verbally identify the working, standing, and running sections of the rope. You will have 4 minutes to complete this skill. You will be required to complete the mandatory steps while performing this skill. The skill will begin on my instruction to start. The trainee shall select the type and length of rope which will be adequate to meet the provisions of this skill. The trainee shall verbally identify five (5) potential elements of rope degradation. The trainee shall verbally identify the working, standing, and running sections of the rope. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. POSSIBLE POINTS The Candidate: a. The trainee shall select the type and length of rope which will be adequate to meet the provisions of this skill. The trainee shall verbally identify five (5) potential elements of rope degradation. The trainee shall verbally identify the working, standing, and running sections of the rope. Because of various acceptable sequential steps in completing a finished knot, the examiner will primarily evaluate the finished product for accuracy by comparing the knot to reference materials. FIREFIGHTER I: ROPES #6 Forming Elements of Tying a Figure Eight on a Bight, Ends Alike Candidate: Examiner: School: Test Site: Notes: The firefighter trainee shall demonstrate tying a figure eight on a bight in preparation for hoisting a ladder. The trainee shall accomplish the skill in 4 minutes or less. POSSIBLE POINTS a. Inspects the rope for damage and verbalizes at least 5 elements of rope damage. (Elements could include: softness, crusty spots, stiffness, brittleness, nicks, cuts, dirt, mildew, heat sears or discoloration, fuzziness, mushy spots, sheath sliding, lumps and/or depressions.) 1 b. Correctly measures the rope for desired size 1 c. Ties a figure eight on a bight and applies to a ladder 1 d. Ties safety knot to standing part 1 e. Verbally identifies the working, standing, and running sections 1 f.
