President s Report The fall show season has begun and the rabbit activities have picked up both for me and for others. I had several inquiries into buying stock at the beginning of September with a few of those sales already concluded. Good thing as my pens were full and I had bred every doe to kindle near the end of October. I want to invite all of you to our Fall Ohio State Dutch Rabbit Show, meeting and Carry-in Dinner. This will be held on Saturday, November 21 st in Lancaster, Ohio. We have always had a good turnout in Lancaster going back to the shows we had there in the 80 s! With the ARBA Convention being on the west coast this year and next, we should have extra large numbers of Dutch. The show will start at 1:00 PM as we cannot get into the building until 12 noon due to Lancaster s Christmas parade. We will have our potluck meal and meeting at the conclusion of the show. We have not set our Spring show date as of yet, but are looking at returning to Springfield the next two years and holding our show on the Saturday before the Springfield club s show. They are looking at having some other specialty shows that day which will lower our building cost with two or three other clubs sharing the building expense. The dates are April 2, 2016 and March 25, 2017. We should have this finalized before our fall show. Also, one item I am proposing to the Board is the potential purchase of a set of six show tables, legs, table top holders and coops for behind the table, as well as the trailer they are stored in. These are potentially for sale from the Southern Ohio RBA. We have used these the last two times we have hosted the Nat l Dutch show. We will know the details of this before the fall show. Lastly, I am starting to work on details for the 2017 Nat l Dutch show. There were no other clubs who submitted a bid and our group was open to the idea. It will be in the Wilmington area again, although at a different location that the last two, as the Robert s Centre did not have an available date. Again, I should have everything lined up before the end of the month. Hope all can make our fall show! Let s shoot for our biggest show ever! -Kevin Hooper RIS Tusc RBA Black Sr. Buck S40 (bred & owned by Scott & Rachel Braden)

Directors Reports Hello OSDRC members, Well summer has gone bye bye! My favorite time of the seasons is here. Fall means back to showing rabbits. Also time to start breeding for NDS. Hope everyone has litter boxes of winners! The OSDRC Fall Specialty will be November 21 st in Lancaster, Ohio. We have 4 great judges. Open judges are Glenn Carr and Todd Naragon. Youth Judges Paul Jurgelonis and Vincent Consiglio. Should be a great show! Remember it's a late start show. Here lately I noticed a lot new members in the youth. It's great site to see. As you all know I'm very supportive of the youth. I try my best to reach out to the new youth breeders. I ask my great OSDRC youth members to introduce yourself to these members. Make them feel welcome! Last thing I like to say is Thank You! To all the members of the OSDRC for making the this club the best and a joy to be around! Sincerely, Lonnie Harper I thought to spend a few minutes and write a few words about breeding Dutch rabbits. I often hear people say you need to match the doe up to the right buck so all the pieces of the puzzle come together. Sort of like find the buck that will correct or counter act the faults that the doe has. Example; the doe with long stops needs to be bred to a buck with short stops or a flat doe should be bred to a really tall buck that has lots of depth. I know a lot of breeders think this way, and I understand the theory behind matching the doe up to the right buck, but I am not so sure that making a puzzle out of it with a lot of unknown and or missing pieces is the best way to go about it. Do two wrong or incorrect markings/faults (long stops bred to short stops) make it right, maybe it will, and maybe it won t? I prefer to breed my does to the very best all around balanced bucks that I can come up with. I am very picky about the bucks that I use and keep for breeding. I tend to have only one or two bucks in each variety, this allows me more cage space for does and juniors. So when it comes to matching up a doe with a buck I pay more attention to the pedigrees and the past history of the buck and doe than I do the individual rabbit. Here are some questions you might ask yourself or things to consider. What varieties are in the pedigrees? What varieties do I want to breed for? Do you have like rabbits (Similar) in both pedigrees? Some lines work better together than others. Stay away from in-breeding and try to do more line-breeding. Over time try to create your own line of at least 3 generations this way you will know 1 st hand how your rabbits have performed and you can use the breeding history of your bucks and does to make more informed decisions on matching them up correctly. Bottom-line is look at the whole package (the big picture) when selecting a buck for breeding and maybe you can complete the puzzle faster and easier because fewer pieces are missing. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our Fall show in Lancaster on November 21 nd. Don t forget to bring a covered dish to share with our fellow members. Hope to See You Soon Al Gerhart
Fall has arrived with it's cooler temperatures and brilliant colors. Fall & winter have always been my favorite time of year. Crisp, clean air signals that the fall show season is upon us. I will only be attending a handful of shows before the year ends. One of these shows is our OSDRC fall show on November 21 st in Lancaster, OH. This has the potential to be a very large show with ARBA convention in Oregon this year. I know of several eastern breeders planning on making the trip to Ohio in November. Bring your best and enjoy a good day with great Dutch people. I think we've all heard it said by breeders tht they won't show a rabbit they didn't raise themselves. Now I do agree that it does give you a greater sense of satsifaction to show and win with home bred stock. I've never had any problems showing stock I've purchased. After all, I bought the animal because I liked it and if it wins it just means I'm picking the right stock! Also, showing and winning with another breeders stock helps to build a good relationship with that breeder and the next time I need to buy something they will be happy to oblige. We must never forget that in the very challenging world of Dutch, we all need a little help mow and then. Building good relationships with fellow breeders will help you stay competitive. My daughter Rachel is active in showing with me today because of a rabbit she picked out. When I got back into Dutch 5 years ago we needed to get another black buck. We went to the Hooper Ranch and he had 2 to choose from. I liked one and Rachel liked the other. Since it was to be her birthday present, I gave in and we got the one she liked. What happened? Well, that buck was shown in 4 National shows, 1 ARBA Convention and 3 NDS. He was never out of the top 5! I didn't like him! Shows what I know! The end result is another young person hooked on Dutch. So when you buy 'em, show 'em if you want. It may well open unexpected doors! Scott Braden October Surprise!
