This excluded the Paralympics, where we were allowed to compete at its debut in 1964 until the 1976 Games. We were then also barred from these Games after the 1976 until 1992 (inclusive). Page 4 of 8
The Early days According to SA's Olympic Committee, Lourens Meintjies was South African's first world champion in any sport- what an achievement! In 1893, three years before the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Meintjies won the 50-mile cycle race in a world-record time at the first world championship event in Chicago. Meintjies went on to set 16 world records (in distances ranging from 3 to 50 miles (4.8 to 80.5 km)) in his career, but never made it to the Olympics. Another gem in South Africa's track cycling history is the Paarl Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club which was established in 1894 with the first Boxing Day meeting being staged in1897. No cycling race in South Africa has a more colourful tradition than the race over 25 miles (40.2 km) held annually at this meeting. Worth mentioning is Dirk Binneman who is the only cyclist to have won this race four years consecutively (1942-1945). The years of Apartheid put an end to our athletes competing internationally (and specifically at the Olympics between 1962 and 1992), but the sport thrived in South Africa. Talented cyclists such as sprinter ace Steve Viljoen who represented South Africa against Australia in 1969, finished under the top 8 at World Championships and won the German Sprint Champion in the Kimberley GP of 1967 was at the order of the day.
