1 ECAS NEWSLETTER ECAS ATHLETES, SIYABULELA MPONGOSHE AND KAYLENE CORBETT INCLUDED IN TEAM SA FOR 2018 GOLD COAST COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN AUSTRAIA 4th Quarter Jan-Mar 2018 Inside this issue: -Kaylene Corbett -Siyabulela Mpongoshe ECAS congratulates boxer Siyabulela Mpongoshe and Kaylene Corbett with their Inclusion in the SA 2018 Commonwealth team. The 2018 Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast) is an international multi-sport event that will be held in -Reinhard Zellhuber Australia from 04 Apr Apr Six thousand six hundred (6 600) athletes from 70 participat- -Rhys Poovan ing nations are scheduled to compete in 26 approved sporting codes. Swimming and Boxing are -Jessica Beukes -Zethu Myeki some of the core sports of the Games. Siyabulela Mpongoshe is one of two boxers selected to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth games in Australia from 04 Apr Apr He is currently the No 1 -rated boxer in South Africa in the 49kg category and has an impressive amateur career of 110 wins of 119 fights. Kaylene Corbett qualified for inclusion in the SA Team the 100 and 200m breaststroke events at a trial competition held at Kings Park pool in Durban. Kaylene s qualifying times in the Kings Park pool for the breaststroke was two minutes 29 seconds for the 200m and 1:09.57 for the 100m. Kaylene is not new to swimming success as she was a 4 x medalist in the breaststroke events of the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa. She has also been awarded SA Swimming colors on a number of occasions. Kaylene completed grade 12 at Pearson High School in Port Elizabeth in 2017 and plans to take some time off studying and prepare for participation in the April Commonwealth Games.
2 SIYABULELA MPONGOSHE WINS GOLD AT THE ZONE 4 AFRICA BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MOZAMBIQUE Siyabolela Mpongoshe, the No 1 -rated boxer in South Africa in the 49kg category, participated in the Zone 4 African Championships in Mozambique in preparation for his participation in the Commonwealth in Australia in April. Siyabolela confirmed his status as a world class boxer, winning the gold medal at the Zone 4 African Championships that took place in in Mozambique (Maputu) from 24 to 25 February The event included the following countries national teams: South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Lesotho and Botswana. Host country, Mozambique, won the 2018 Zone 4 African Championships team event (first time) with South Africa ending second, followed by Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Seychelles and Swaziland. Participation in the event was important as it served as a qualifier for the African Boxing Championship, which will take place in June and July 2018 (venue to be confirmed). LUUXOLO ADAMS - ATHLETICS SOUTH AFRICAS NEW SPRINT STAR ECAS athlete, Luxolo Adams made an huge impact on the SA Sprinting scene during the 2018 athletics season and he believes he could still improve and become only the 5th South African to break the 20 sec barrier in the 200m. Below is an overview of Luxolo s results for the period Jan-Mar 2018: Grand Prix #1 (1 March 2018 Men s 200m at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium, Johannesburg). Achieved bronze medal in the 200m event in a personal best time of Grand Prix #2: (7 March 2018 Men s 150m race Bestmed Tuks Stadium). Luxolo secured a Bronze Medal in a time of 15:18s (150m) ahead of American sprinter Justin Gatlin, the reigning 100m World Champion. Grand Prix #3: (22 March 2018 Men s 200m Dal Josafat Stadium in Paarl). Achieved a gold medal and personal best in a winning time of 20.01s. All indications are that Luxolo is steadily improving his times and that participation in events such as Diamond League and world competitions are currently being scheduled. 3 REINHARD ZELLHUBER COMPETED AT 2018 MOUNTAIN BIKE (MTB) WORLD CUP EVENT The Mountain Bike (MTB) WORLD CUP XCO #1 was held in Stellenbosch, Western Cape on 10 March ECAS athlete, REINHARD ZELLHUBER participated in the Men Under 23 race event and finished in a creditable 53rd place overall. The Men under 23 race event was won by Petter Fagerhaug from Norway. New Zealand s Oliver Ben and Perrin Ganier Neilo from France, finished in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The 2018 World Cup race event attracted over 70 participants from more than 20 countries. The MTB World Cup comprised of following race categories: Men Elite, Women Elite, Men under 23 and Women Under 23. ECAS TO PARTNER WITH IMVELI CYCLING ACADEMY Imveli Cycling Academy riders and administrator/founder Lukolo Baldi, visited the ECAS Gym at Mandela University HP Complex on 20 February 2018 to further explore the ideal of cooperation. The Imveli Cycling Academy has a unique sports program and they have as their core focus areas the ideal to nurture, grow and sustain young sports people (in previously disadvantaged communities) to impact them through their unique sports programme model. They strive to produce professional cyclists, specialist bike mechanics, cycling and fitness instructors and educated youth to be entrepreneurs and better citizens. Imveli has further objectives of developing a multi sports culture in township and rural areas and to operate community developmental skills programs in township areas. ECAS has agreed to assist the Imveli Cycling group with periodization plans that include specific conditioning for the best cyclists. Jason le Roux, the ECAS Sport Scientist, will be hands on with testing, developing training programs and monitoring their progress. Imveli Cycling Academy Athletes at the ECAS Gym
4 MODERN PENTATHLON GOLD MEDAL FOR RHYS POOVAN IN LAGOS, NIGERIA East London based Modern Pentathlon athlete, Rhys Poovan, secured a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2018 Continental Qualifier which took place on 05 December 2017 in Lagos, Nigeria. With this achievement, Rhys Poovan secured his place to participate in the Modern Pentathlon event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games to be hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 1-6 October The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (English: International Modern Pentathlon Union), commonly known by the acronym UIPM was introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm (SWE) 1912, comprising the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, which embraced the spirit of its ancient counterpart. The UIPM organizes an annual World Championship for senior, junior and youth athletes, as well as a World Cup Series that consists of four events culminating in a World Cup Final. Every four years, the ultimate test: The Olympic Games. FUTURELIFE REPRESENTATIVE UPDATES DEPARTMENTAL OFFICIALS ON PARTNERSHIP WITH ECAS FUTURELIFE dietician, Mrs Angela Bentley, recently conducted a talk at the EC Golf Club in East London where she addressed senior managers of the Eastern Cape Department of Sport Recreation and Arts and Culture. The purpose of the talk was to update the delegates on the FUTURELIFE and ECAS partnership and its achievements for the years. Mrs Bentley provided an overview of the new FUTURELIFE Products and a national perspective on the company s profile. She also covered topics such as nutritional guidance to high performance participants, general nutritional requirements for athletes and the effective use of the FUTURELIFE products ECAS in partnership with FUTURELIFE supports about 200 ECAS athletes across all 8 districts in the Eastern Cape. The partnership covers the basic daily nutritional needs of the mentioned athletes and includes FUTURELIFE products such as FUTURELIFE Smart Food and FUTURELIFE SmartBars. ECAS is proud to be associated with FUTURELIFE and believes that the sponsorship of products benefits the ECAS athletes. Special focus is given to the improvement of the nutritional intake of rural athletes.
5 TWO OPEN WATER SWIMMING (OWS) GOLD MEDALS FOR JESSICA BEUKES IN MAURITIUS ECAS congratulates Jessica Beukes on winning 2 gold medals at the 1st CANA Zone IV World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in Mauritius. The Open Water Swimming event was held in Mon Choisy (Mauritius) from 2-3 December Jessica Beukes won a Gold Medal when she competed in the 3KM Open Water Race event in the age group division. See results of the 3km Open Water Race below: Winner: Beukes, Jessica, of South Africa in a time of 14min 31seconds 2nd position: Jugroop, Grace, CASA in a time of 21min 03 seconds 3rd position: Sakauloo, Sumayyah, PLSSC a time of 2minutes and 26 seconds Beukes also won a team Gold Medal when she teamed up with fellow South African, David Leukes, in the Mix 500 LC Meter Freestyle Relay race event. QUALITY GOLF FROM ZETHU MYEKI AT THE INDIA LADIES AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP IN BANGALORE ECAS athlete Zethu Myeki from Mdantsane participated in the 101st addition of the All India Ladies Amateur Championship that was held at the Eagleton Golf Resort in Bangalore (India) from the 19 to 24 December players form various countries such as South Africa, Bengal, USA, Malysia etc. attended the event. Zethu managed to reach the round of 32 but was unlucky not to make the cut. She missed the playoff by 1 stroke. (6 players ended on a score of 158) Myeki was very noble in defeat and had the following to say about her performance, I played my best golf today, but my best was just not good enough. You know, I am disappointed, but it is what it is and I am prepared to go back and work harder to succeed. The tournament was won by South Africa s Danielle du Toit who beat Ashley Lau Jen Wen from Malaysia 2 & 1 to become the 101st All India Ladies Amateur Champion.
6 SPORT SCIENTIFIC TRAINING METHODS WORKSHOP FOR COACHES AT CILLIE HIGH SCHOOL Thirteen (13) Cillie High School (Port Elizabeth) coaches attended a SPORT SCIENTIFIC TRAINING METHODS WORKSHOP at the school Monday 12 February The purpose of the workshop was to expose the Coaches to advance scientific training methods. Mr Wayde Douglas, ECAS coach s education project leader, did a power point presentation focusing on the main elements of periodization. Practical demonstrations were done by ECAS Athlete Mentor, Mr Loyiso Ntombana which focused on exercises coaches can implement within their respective sporting seasons. FUTURELIFE provided all participating Coaches with FUTURELIFE Smart Food sachets and FUTURELIFE SmartBars. At the conclusion of the workshop each participating coach received a copy of the ECAS Phase 2 Sport Science Level 1 Manual. The School also received a basic equipment kit bag.
