Spring, Texas RHP 3-4 3.92 Sunday Jill Garro Sr. Bulverde, Texas LHP 8-4 1.20 NSU Amanda Glenn Jr. Dry Prong, La. RHP 6-12 2.80 The UT-Arlington softball team will try to stay undefeated in Southland Conference play as they travel to Natchitoches, La. for a three-game series at Northwestern State. CHECKING OUT THE COMPETITION Northwestern State is 2-4 in the Southland Conference after dropping three games to Texas-San Antonio last weekend at home. Northwestern State (12-17, 2-4) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 9-5 win over Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. NSU has lost nine of its last 11 games. Amanda Glenn had the hot stick at the plate for the Lady Demons against Tech, going 4-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Brittany Card added a 2-for-3 showing with a double, RBI and a run scored. Also with multiple hits for NSU were Sarina Noack, going 2-for-5 with a triple, run scored and three RBI; Michelle Castellano 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI; and Lyndsey Gorski hitting 2-for-4 with a run scored. Offensively, the Demons lead the SLC in doubles (44) and triples (7). The Demons are ninth in the SLC in batting average (.235) and on-base percentage (.313). Noack leads the league with 20 stolen bases. Glenn (6-12) has appeared in 22 games and is ranked second in the league in strikeouts (105). Her 2.80 ERA is eighth-best in the league and opponents are hitting.235 against her. She is also tied for fourth in the league in runs batted in (18). ABOUT THE MAVS The UT-Arlington offense continues to play well in Southland Conference play. The Mavericks improved to 6-0 in league play with a three-game sweep of Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., last weekend. For the series, UTA piled up 24 runs on 31 hits - including 10 extra base hits. The Mavericks can match their best conference start with a win over Northwestern State on Saturday. UTA began the 2003 conference season 7-0 before going on to win the school s second regular season title with a 23-4 mark. Over the last eight games, UTA is scoring 5.5 runs per game and averaging a.272 team batting average. SOUTHPAW STARTING OFF WELL Senior lefthander Jill Garro (Bulverde, Texas) leads the Southland Conference with a 1.20 ERA after posting two wins at Nicholls State and a win over Texas Southern. Garro (8-4) tied for fifth on the career wins list with the win over TSU on Tuesday. She needs 6.2 innings of work to move into fifth on the career innings pitched list with 579.2. Garro already moved into fifth place on the career strikeout list and has 428 career Ks heading into Saturday s game. She will move into fourth place with 90 strikeouts and third with 99 more. Garro, was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year for the week of March 7 after allowing one earned run in an 11-inning complete game decision and followed with two innings of relief for the win in a doubleheader sweep against McNeese State on March 4. Garro shut down Loyola Marymount in the Mavs 10-0 win in the championship game of the Paradise Classic. - continued on page 2-1

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES UTA boasts not one, but two Joneses on the squad. Sophomore Katie Jones (Cedar Hill, Texas) started seven games at the Paradise Classic Tournament in Hawaii in the field and sophomore pitcher Laura Jones (Rogue River, Ore.) went 2-0 opening weekend with two complete-game performances in Hawaii. Jones (4-2) moved into top five in SLC in ERA at 1.91 after a near-perfect game in her last outing a 3-0 win over Texas Southern. Jones allowed a two-out single to left field in the top of the seventh inning to break up the gem. MORE NAME GAMES UTA has two Andersons on the squad - Courtni and Courtney. It is easy to separate them with Courtney being the Mavs regular third baseman and Courtni behind the plate at catcher. AUTUMN SPRINGS INTO ACTION Senior outfielder Autumn Petrino (Rowlett, Texas) was named the Hawai i Paradise Classic Tournament MVP after batting.462 with 12 hits and eight RBI. She was also named to the Southland Conference Player of the Week Honor Roll. Batting.200 (12 of 60) since Paradise Hawaii Classic. Petrino s two RBIs against Texas Southern earlier this week moved her into a tie for third on the career list with Shelley Bulin who had 92 RBI from 1981-84. MORE ACCOLADES Sophomore April Clougherty (Dallas, Texas) joined Petrino on the all-tournament team in Hawaii after batting.350 in eight games. She has gone five for her last 34 at-bats (.147) since the Hawaii Paradise Classic. TAKING THE EXTRA BASE UTA mustered just 45 extra-base hits in 2005. After 22 games, the Mavs have 44 extra base hits. UTA averaged fewer than 3.0 runs per game in 2005 and through 20 games are averaging 4.7 runs per game. UP NEXT UTA will play seven games in six days next week. The Mavs host New Mexico State in a doubleheader Tuesday, March 21, at, travel to Centenary for two games on Wednesday and then will host Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game weekend series. QUICK HITS * Amanda Swofford is tied for team lead in runs scored (14), leads team in batting percentage (.353), doubles (8), walks (14) and sacrifice flies (2).
