Volume 3, Issue 5, 2016 Page 3 Activities Corner To conclude the exciting month celebrating the Rio Summer Olympics, we had Lyle Povah in for some seriously high energy entertainment. The event started with an award ceremony. Residents were awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold medals for the following sports: Olympic Basketball Olympic Ring Toss Olympic Bucket Game Olympic Shot-Put Olympic Bean Bag Toss. Each winner was recognized and cheered! We also celebrated Luella s 100th Birthday! Drumming with Lyle was an absolute hit! It was amazing to see how the African drumming positively affected everyone attending. The sound of the drums was therapeutic and had most residents staying and participating right till the very end of the program! Thank you to our family members who joined us. And a special thank you to our dancing students and volunteers who got our residents up and moving. We look forward to having Lyle return next year! It was a rocking and rolling kind of afternoon in August. The weather was perfect to show off the stunning classic cars from the U.K. Car Club. Residents were thrilled and impressed by the beauty and the mint condition of the cars! Definitely brought back a lot of memories. After the car showing, residents retreated back to the cool Sunroom for entertainment provided by Gail and Doug Hawksworth performing 50 s songs, while enjoying ice cream sodas and root beer floats. Residents danced and jived to the music. It was a fun-filled afternoon!

We had dedicated residents who watered and nourished the garden daily. Thank you to Gerald Cupido, for sharing his time and knowledge. Residents have enjoyed the tasty cucumbers. We look forward to enjoying some more organic vegetables from our garden. We look forward to our organic kale in our Indo-Canadian meals, and the squash and carrots in our muffins and soups. With this year s experience, we look forward to continuing with this program next year, and invite family members to participate in our Green Thumb Group. Annual Staff Costume Contest This year we will celebrate our fourth annual Staff Halloween Costume Contest. Suncreek staff really get into the spirit and dress up for our residents. Page 6 Suncreek Village From the Director of Care Services We are sad to see the summer come to an end, but I must say we certainly enjoyed our lovely courtyards! From the wonderful new gardens filled with organic vegetables, to the Annual Staff BBQ, resident BBQs, warm sunshine therapy, outdoor walks, resident parties in the courtyards. And so much more. Lets just say there was a lot going on at Suncreek Village! Suncreek is participating in a national research program called Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC). TREC is a national research program studying Canadian nursing homes. This study is researching the link between work environment and the use of best practices in long term care facilities. The goal is to use this information to improve the workplace for staff and care for residents. As a result from the feedback received from our Nursing Services Aides we have made changes to our Care Conference packages and are ensuring our frontline staff are involved in the feedback process. We also welcome your feedback. Clive Alladin ~ Steel Drum Band Typically, on a Sunday it s a quiet kind of day for Suncreek Village residents, but on Sunday, July 31st, it was far from a quiet day! The residents were treated to the wonderful sounds of a lively, spirited steel drum band, led by Clive Alladin. Clive volunteered to bring his steel drum band in to perform for our residents and we just could not resist. The sound of the steel drums filled the Gazebo Garden air with joy and smiles. Thank you, Clive!
