1 NW SKATE OPEN HOUSE WELCOME TO OPEN HOUSE #1 MERCER SKATE RELOCATION New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS) is being redeveloped and the existing Mercer Stadium skatepark needs to be relocated. As per the agreement with School District No. 40, it is expected that the skatepark lands will need to be vacated in the early Fall of 2017 to make way for the new school construction. Planning for the new skatepark is taking place in 3 phases throughout 2017. City staff will be using the feedback we get to shape and refine the project along the way. 4 CONSIDERING A LOCATION MERCER SKATE RELOCATION SITE SELECTION + EVALUATION To determine a suitable location for the new skatepark, the City takes into consideration the following factors: - City-owned land is preferred to avoid delays related to land acquisition - Adequate space (existing skatepark is approx. 1,340 sq. m. or 14,500 sq. ft.) - Relatively flat, without steep slopes - Proximity to transit - Visibility from nearby park, business or street - Near to existing amenities (i.e. washrooms, drinking fountain, seating areas and park activities/ facilities) - Fit within surrounding area (i.e. minimize noise for nearby residents and compatible with the character of the area) - Does not displace other established park uses or groups of park users - Does not displace green space or trees - Can support the structural requirements of the skatepark SITE SELECTION PROCESS Sites suggested by participants during phase 1 (13) Refined List of Potential Sites (3) During Phase 1, staff began the skatepark site selection study by asking stakeholders and the public for suggested locations. 13 sites were evaluated against the site selection criteria and 3 sites were shortlisted for further feedback Feedback on refined list during phase 2 For Phase 2, staff are presenting the 3 shortlisted sites and asking for further feedback from the public. we are here Final site selection As part of Phase 2 consultation, staff will make a recommendation for a final location to present back to public during phase 3. Staff from the Parks & Recreation Department further evaluated these sites (as per the evaluation criteria listed on Board #4) and selected three sites to take forward to the public for further consideration. Your feedback will be considered in determining the best location for the new skatepark. We also invite you to complete the questionnaire this evening or online on at www.newwestcity.ca/skatepark After the survey results from Open House #1 are evaluated, City staff will further analyse the best location for skate park. A recommendation regarding a final preferred location will be presented to Council for endorsement, in principle, in Fall 2017. A design-build consultant will be contracted this Summer to help facilitate the third and final phase of the consultation process in Fall 2017. This phase will include participatory design workshops and a public open house for feedback on the preferred location and design concept for the new skate facility. The final location and design will be presented to Council for endorsement in Winter 2018 and construction is scheduled for Spring 2018.
