Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 1 Station 1 puck handling tight turns forward skating with puck shooting Players skate through pylon course carrying the puck, upon completing the pylon course, player skates with speed straight toward the goal and takes a shot. - ability to carry a puck while executing tight turns around the pylons - forward skating while carrying the puck - shooting while in motion
Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 1 Station 2 Forward skating Backward skating Pivots - F to B and B to F stopping Players skate (F) from start to 1st pylon where they execute a pivot (F to B), skate backward to 2nd pylon and execute pivot (B to F), skate forward around the 3rd pylon to the 4th pylon where they execute a pivot (F to B), skate backward to 5th pylon and execute a pivot (B to F), skate forward to the goal line and execute a two foot stop. All pivots should be executed facing the near boards. The two foot stop should alternate sides each time the player completes the drill. At this station, player's will be evaluated on: - Forward skating striding - Forward to Backward pivots, both right and left sides - Backward to forward striding - Backward to Forward pivots, both right and left sides - Two foot stopping, both right and left sides
Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 1 Station 3 Forward skating start Two foot stopping (R and L) Tight turns (R and L) Cross-overs (both sides) Players accelerate from stationary position, skating forward to the blue line where they will execute a two foot stop (to the Left). Players will then accelerate from their stop, skating forward to goal-line where they will execute a two foot stop (to the Right). Players will accelerate from their stop towards the 1st pylon where they will execute and tight turn (to the Right), skate toward the 2nd pylon where they will execute a tight turn (to the left). Players then skate a full circle executing cross-overs before returning to the back of the line. Coaches will direct players as to which direction (clock-wise / counter clock-wise) they should skate the circle. At this station, players will be evaluated on; - acceleration from stop - stopping ability (both sides) - Ability to execute tight turns (both sides) - Cross-overs (both sides)
Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 1 Station 4 Relative speed Puck control and protection under pressure Players will begin on coaches whistle. Player 1 skates with the puck toward the far end net. Player 2 skates without the puck on a backcheck. - Relative skating speed - Ability to carry/protect the puck at top speed
Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 2 Station 1 Passing (Forehand and Backhand) Receiving (Forehand and Backhand) Shooting Players skate with the puck toward the pylon and executes a board pass, retrieving the puck players will execute a pass to the coach and continue skating towards the net. Players will receive a return pass from the coach and proceed to shoot on goal. Note: This drill will be executed on both sides or the rink, players should use their forehand and backhand appropriately when executing both passes and upon retrieving the puck. - ability to execute a board pass around the pylon (on both forehand and backhand) using appropriate weight and angle to ensure they maintain control - ability to make and receive a pass (on both forehand and backhand) to/from a stationary player (coach) - shooting ability
Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 2 Station 2 Passing and Receiving in motion (Forehand and Backhand) Awareness (Offsides, decision to shoot or pass, positioning for rebound) Players work in pairs to pass the puck down the ice (2 on 0), then shoot and play one rebound. Players should be mindful of offsides. - passing and receiving in motion - Positional awareness (offsides, when to shoot, positioning self for rebound) - shooting
Jets Atom Tryouts: Session 2 Station 3 Backward skating Gap Control Body Positioning Puck protection All players will play both "Forward" and "Defence" during this drill. "D" starts the drill by skating with the puck towards the "F", before the pylon, "D" passes the puck to the "F" then executes a pivot around the pylon to take a defensive role. The "F" receives the puck and skates forward taking an offensive role in a 1 on 1. When the play is finished, the "D" joins the forward line at that end of the ice. while the "F" joins the defence line at centre ice facing the line just joined by his recent opponent. - skating speed relative to other players - Defensive Gap control (relative space between self and the attacking forward) - body positioning - Puck Protection
