We are pleased to have our friend Don Heggie joining us once again as our guest with his offering of Simmental Bulls. Thank you to all of our customers for your previous and continued support. We take it very seriously, the responsibility you have given us to provide your next herd bulls year after year. In 2016 we saw a correction in the feeder cattle market to say the least. Although we saw a significant decrease in the value of all classes of cattle it was still a profitable year overall for the cow calf producer. For the time being it appears that the cattle feeder is finding some margin again in the cattle that were purchased in recent months. Current indications show some stability has returned to the market. Although sale prices of most classes of cattle have been reduced from what we saw in 2015, good quality cattle in large uniform groups are still topping every sale. When markets are under pressure it is more important than ever to ensure that your calves are the ones that command a premium. Selecting the right bulls to sire the next group of calves will have a huge influence on this. We have worked tirelessly to find the sires of the Bulls we are offering in this year s sale. You will notice some in the offering by our Rock Solid Senior Bulls like Red Jewel King 108Z. You will also notice some Bulls sired by some new sires like 5L Tradin Right a Bull that we purchased from 5L Red Angus in Montana as well there are both some Red and Black hided sons out of Black Mac Upshot who is a new outcross from our ET program. We are extremely proud of our cowherd and the new set of daughters we have to calve each year. The uniformity in our heifer calves is something to be proud of, even before we sort for replacements. Overall the cows are fertile, easy fleshing, good footed and clean uddered. With our excessively busy schedules we have no time to mess with problem cows. We are pleased with the Bulls we have on offer. We feel that we have a good selection of Bulls to accomplish a variety of set parameters. There is a good selection of heifer bulls this year, as well as some Bulls that will sire some high performing feeder cattle. Also particularly in the Tradin right Sired Bulls there is a selection of bulls that will bring you your next set of replacement females. We have invested and continue to invest in technology to give you the most accurate information about each bull as possible. This includes i50k genomic testing which you can read more about on page 4 of the catalogue. The Bulls have been fed responsibly and come to you with a passed semen evaluation and are fully guaranteed. None of the bulls are fed creep feed at any time. We feel that this is an artificial representative of performance and sacrifices longevity. At the Ranch the Bulls are primarily worked horseback and walked through regularly on foot. Don is Responsible for Mineral Delivery and evaluates the Bulls almost every day on his quad before they go the the feedyard. At the Feedyard they are both walked through and rode through with horses daily. This is our 46th Bull sale. We haven t forgotten that we have been in this business for this amount of time because of your faith in our operation. Our commitment is to continue to operate as we have in the past and improve based on past experiences. A $50.00 Discount will be applied off invoice to all Bulls leaving the market on sale day. All other bulls will be delivered free of charge to your door within 300km of the sale site at our convenience. Once sold the Bulls become the responsibility of the purchaser. We recommend insurance if you would like your new bull to return to the feedyard and delivered at a later date. If a Bull is purchased from a distance further than 300km please contact us ahead of the sale and we can discuss options at that time. We will have a form for you to complete at settlement asking for the estimated time frame you would like your bull delivered as well as directions to your place and contact numbers. What On Earth is i50k Genomics Testing? In the Fall of 2015 we began investing in the use of i50k Genomics Testing. Every Angus Bull in this year s Bull sale as well as every purebred Replacement female we have retained have undergone the use of this technology. What does this mean to you as a purchaser of our offering? First of all this ensures Sire Verification of every Bull. This eliminates any possible Sire error. Another benefit to you is an improvement in the accuracy of the EPD s on all of our Bulls. Traditionally the Canadian Angus Association takes averages of both parents of each calf, they then calculate the EPD s on each animal. What i50k does is takes genomic markers collected through DNA and blends this with EPD s to achieve Genomically Enhanced EPD s. This gives us much more accurate information. When you purchase a Bull that has not been tested you are relying on EPD averages that both his parents have produced. When looking at an i50k Tested Bull the Genomically Enhanced EPD s are as accurate as though the Bull you are purchasing has sired 20 calves depending on the trait. This obviously doesn t tell us everything about the Bull, but gives us similar information of what we might see from the first set of calves they have sired. Although EPD s have been a very valuable tool in the past, the use of i50k offers added confidence in purchasing decisions. This technology is not some gimmick to make our Bulls look better than normal. For every Bull in the sale that experienced a positive impact on their EPD s another Bull had a negative impact. Take Lot # s 101 & 102 in this year s sale for example. These two bulls are twin brothers. Normally their EPD s would be identical before siring any calves, but because they have been i50k Tested you can see variance in some traits. Ken and Brant sold our Bull Sale for 41 years. In the very early days Ken sold our commercial cattle at Park Bend for Pincher Creek Community Auctions. In 1971 Ken also sold Red Stormalong 3A who we exhibited and was crowned Grand Champion Bull and high seller at the Calgary Bull Sale. He was also the Auctioneer for the first few Canadian Red Roundup Red Angus Sales which is still a sale today that is a source of a select group of Red Angus Females. We feel fortunate that we were able to work with Ken. He was a friend to all and a respected personality to the Canadian Beef Industry. We send our condolences to the Hurlburt Family.
