Samantha Black is recognized as Salutatorian, earning a 3.946 grade point average. Sara, daughter of Nathan and Lavonne Athorp, is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, the Howards Grove High School Music program, including Drum Line, and our successful Forensics program. Sara is President and Music and Drama Director at Mosel Farm and Home 4H Club, and Youth Leader for Confirmation Retreat and Hand Bell Choir at Ebenezer United Church of Christ. Sara, a future teacher who earned a 32 on her ACT, will major in Special Education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. 2015 Salutatorian Samantha Black Autumn, daughter of Carrie Damrow and Jeremy Risch, is a member of International Club, National Honor Society, Yearbook, and Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness. She is a Sheboygan County Humane Society volunteer and a Sunday School Teacher at St. Marks UCC. Autumn excelled in Volleyball, leading the Lady Tigers to their first State Volleyball appearance since 1976. Autumn will attend Minnesota State University-Mankato an athletic scholarship, working toward a probable career in Clinical Psychology. District News Dear Howards Grove Families, Message From The Superintendent Christopher Peterson Thank you for another successful year! Every year seems to go by faster and faster and we see our children grow up too quickly. This year we will have 61 seniors walking across the stage at graduation. When I started here, these students were only in 7th grade - where did the time go? While the end of a school year can be an exciting time with graduation, awards ceremonies, concerts, and sporting events, it is also a time to say goodbye. Besides our graduating seniors, we also say goodbye to some veteran staff members who are retiring or moving on to new vocations in life. Chris Lemanczyk (24 years with the district), Peggy Hansmann (20 years with the district), Lois Finstad (22 years with the district), and Judy Faust (23 years with the district) will all be leaving at the end of the school year. We wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors. Also leaving the district for other positions or opportunities are Eric Worth (High School PE), Vanesa Brotske (High School Biology), Amanda Rabe (Early Childhood and 4K), Wayne Hoffman (High School Tech Ed), and Laura Albright (Payroll/HR). Good luck to all of you. Like every summer, the district will be busy with many projects. Hiring new staff, maintenance of our facilities, summer school, teacher trainings, updates on curriculum, and lots of cleaning will keep our buildings full of energy. Northview News Parker Fintelmann stands next to the spring basket he won during National Nutrition Month. Northview Celebrates National Nutrition Month During the week of March 23-27, 2015, Northview and the Food Service Department celebrated National Nutrition Month. Students who ate lunch during the week were given small tokens of appreciation with a specific food group highlighted each day. Those who ate hot lunch every day that week had their name entered into a drawing to receive a spring basket. The winner of the basket was Parker Fintelmann. Congratulations Parker!!! Submitted by Becky Schlegel, Head of Food Service Commodities for Critters In March, fourth grade students participated in an item drive competition to see which fourth grade class would have lunch first during fourth quarter. Students were asked to bring in Commodities for Critters to benefit the Wisconsin Humane Society. The student response was incredible! As a fourth grade, we donated 11, 533.7 ounces of items to benefit animals in our area. Mrs. Mulder s fourth grade class donated the most ounces with 5, 178.55 ounces. Great Job fourth grade! On Friday, March 20, fourth grade students celebrated the end of their third writing unit. During this unit, students did research on various topics about the Revolutionary War and wrote an informational text to teach other students about their specific topic. Topics included: The Boston Tea Party, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, The Battle of Yorktown and many more! During the celebration, students shared their books and enjoyed snacks typically eaten during the 18th century. Students tried tea, pound cake and molasses cookies. Middle School News Sixth Grade Musical: Go West! Pedal Power Seventh and eighth grade FACE students learn about energy production, consumption, and conservation with the Pedal Power energy bike. Student volunteers, 8th graders, Aaron Korpi and 7th grader Ashleigh Brooks test their strength as they pedal their way to preparing a smoothie to demonstrate the amount of effort necessary to power the blender. Submitted by Jamie Buechel, Family and Consumer Education Teacher Band and choir directors, Angie Houston and Zach Holzer collaborated with the sixth grade teachers, computer class, and the art department to produce, for the third time, a musical performed by the sixth grade students. Go West! - A Musical Celebration Of America s Westward Expansion - combined music, history, and drama to explore important facts about the westward expansion of early United States and discovered that real gold is not always the kind made into ingots and baubles. Photos are from the three seperate performances of Go West! Animal Visitors in Fifth Grade Mrs. Perronne and the fifth grade classes would like to extend a big thank you to Armin Lukaszewski and Andrew Khalaf for volunteering their time, expertise, and belongings to help enhance our science lessons. While studying the classification of the animal kingdom and body systems the students had a unique visitor and artifacts to investigate. Armin presented Golmez, a red tail boa constrictor, to the class so they could learn and ask questions about reptiles. Students were able to observe first-hand the movements and mannerisms of the snake. Some daring students enjoyed handling the snake with assistance. It was an exciting day. Music News Fourth grade general music guitar students learning to read/play music classical style. Third graders pose after performing at the December concert, at the Stefanie Well Center. NV Music Notes In April, the Northview General Music students (grades 1-4) presented a choral concert, titled Music, Music, Music. The evening was filled with singing, dancing, bucket drumming, guitar playing and much learning. A wide variety of styles was presented; hip-hop, folk, show tunes, patriotic, etc. The evening concluded with a 4th grade choral piece performed in 2-part harmony. The students were given a standing ovation! Congratulations to all students involved, I am so very proud of you. Music News Nick Hanke will perform for the second time at State Honors Band this summer. Congratulations Nick! N Nick Hanke - State Honors Band Nick Hanke will be participating this summer in the Wisconsin School Music Association State Honors Band for the 2nd time. This is the highest honor a Wisconsin high school musician can achieve. To receive this twice, puts Nick in an extremely elite group! Nick auditioned in Waukesha this winter and received their highest recommendation to participate. He will attend a summer camp and then perform with the ensemble for the State Music Teachers Convention in Madison this fall. Representing the Green Bay region, they secured their spot in the state finals to take place in Madison on June 13th. They have also earned a spot at Summerfest in the Launchpad Green Bay Regional Showcase on the Johnson Controls Stage on Wednesday, July 1. Karmah is a band of high school sophomores from Sheboygan North and Howards Grove High Schools. The bands compete for the state title and the prestigious Les Paul Launchpad Award. The winning band will also receive a professional recording session, a 2015 Summerfest gig in Milwaukee opening for a headlining act, and the ability to designate a Yamaha equipment package to their school, courtesy of Yamaha Corporation of America. High School News (continued from page 1) Carlie Stauss, daughter of Chuck and Brenda Stauss, is a member of Yearbook, Student Council, Lakeland College Math Meet, and Pink Out for Breast Cancer. She was a group leader for Challenge Days, a leader on the State Volleyball Team, Captain of our Soccer Team, and our representative for Badger Girl State and Wisconsin Leadership Seminar. Of special note is her participation in the Youth Apprenticeship Nursing program this year through Lakeshore Technical College. Carlie will attend Carroll University for Nursing. Samantha Black, daughter of Tracy and Sue Black, served as Captain of the State runner-up Dance Team, along with being a member of Student Council, Yearbook, Pause for a Cause, and Graduation, Prom, and Spring Fling Committee. She was a leader on our State Volleyball Team, contributed to the success of the Fast Pitch program, and is a member of National Honor Society. High School News Sideline Report There are big changes coming in the area of athletics for the 2015/2016 school year. First, we would like to sadly say good-bye to a great teacher and friend and co-ad with me, Eric Worth. Eric will begin work at Acuity this summer, and fortunately, will continue to remain our head basketball coach. So, we get to see him around school especially in the winter months. With that change, I will be taking over Eric s half of the AD duties. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns. The easiest way to reach me is by email dschmid@hgsd.k12.wi.us Additionally, we have finalized our work for the new athletic conference that the WIAA has realigned us into. Our conference will remain intact, and we will be adding 5 schools from the old Olympian conference: St. Mary s Catholic, Reedsville, Hilbert, Mishicot and Manitowoc Lutheran. We have spent 18 months shaping our new conference and arranging schedules to accommodate the new teams. One of the exciting things we have done is partnered with Lakeland College to run end of the year tournaments in volleyball, and boys and girls basketball. In addition, we will have more complete schedules in all of our sports. Another change you will see is the addition of a conference pass that will be good for both home and away events at all 14 schools in our new conference. Look for more information at school registration at the end of summer. As the school year winds down, there are still plenty of opportunities to catch your Tigers in action. Spring is one of our busiest times of the year. On a warm spring day, consider watching golf, girl s soccer, softball, tennis, track, or a baseball game. Submitted by Dave Schmid, High School Athletic Director Pause for a Cause 2015 The Howards Grove High School students, faculty, and staff held their 7th annual charity fundraiser, Pause for a Cause, benefiting Children s Hospital of Wisconsin, on Wednesday, March 25. We ve chosen to work with Children s Hospital as the students and staff feel a real connection due to the number of students and family members who have used the services that the hospital offers. The evening offered food, refreshments, a silent auction, children s activities, a dodge ball tournament, a concert by the high school jazz band and choir, and a 5K run/walk. New this year was the Howie Dash! Kids in fourth grade and younger were able to do a fun-run around the high school track with the HG mascot, Howie. Students and staff were on hand to run the evening s events and area businesses and community members donated food items and silent auction offerings. High School Post Prom For a third year in a row, JB s Entertainment Center hosted a post-prom party for Howards Grove High School students and their guests on Saturday, May 9th. The three hour event, held immediately after prom, included bowling, pizza, soda, darts, pool, air hockey, a money machine, door prizes and socializing. Fun was had by all that attended. It was a big success. The post-prom committee (Amy Betke, Julie Brunner, Lori Gallenberger, Sara Jaeger, Amy Luebke, Lonna Near and Gail Peterson) would like to thank JB s Entertainment Center for hosting this event again this year, Scott s Vending for donating all the arcade games, Cleveland State Bank for the use of the money machine and the staff at Howards Grove High School. We would also like to thank all of the local businesses who made such generous donations. With their generosity, not only were we able to give away some great grand prizes, we were able to provide great door prizes to all that attended. Most of the work has already been established from doing it the past three years. The post prom committee has provided a safe environment for the Howards Grove High School students to go to after prom. It has been held at JB s Entertainment Center and because of generous business donations, wonderful prizes were given out to those that attended. It has been a successful event and very well represented by the high school students. All of the students were very respectful and appreciative of the adult chaperones. High School News Forensic Team News After months of preparation, twelve members of the Howards Grove High School forensics team competed at the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association s state meet at UW Madison on Saturday April 18, 2015. The students performed before judges and were graded on categories such as vocal expression, creation of an introduction to their topic, and familiarization with their theme. Participants were rated on a scale of 1-25. A perfect score of 25 earned a gold medal for critic s choice. Silver medals were awarded to participants scoring between 23-24. Bronze medals were awarded for scores of 20-22. Becca Scheiber received a bronze medal in poetry for her interpretation of Ode to a Nightingale by John Keats. Connor Siemers earned a silver medal for his four minute speech about GMOs. Ryan Bell was awarded a silver medal in solo acting for his monologue One Beer too Many by Billy Houck. Sara Athorp, Maverick Moore, and Zack Moch earned gold medals for their ten minute play Elevator Games by Sean Abley. Kara Bell and Erin Hanke received silver medals for their ten minute play Miss Fortune by Karen Mueller Bryson. Nick Hanke, Vivienne Johnson and Morgan Bramstedt were awarded gold medals for their ten minute play Little Spaces by Bobby Keniston. Reed Trueblood earned a gold medal for his original speech about school start times. Junior Achievement Business Challenge State Competition FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) members, Travis Eilers and Caleb Holzman qualified for State in the Junior Achievement Business Challenge. The state competition was held on April 23 at Acuity in Sheboygan. Business Challenge uses a software game that allows student teams to compete against one another as CEO s of a simulated company. Players make business decisions relating to product pricing, production, marketing, capital investment, research and development, and charitable giving. The team of Eilers and Holzman moved successfully through the simulation, ending in 4th place overall. Travis Eilers (left) and Caleb Holzman earned 4th place at the Junion Achievement Business Challenge State Competition. Both boys are Sophomores and plan to attend the competition again next year. The experience will definitely help them in next year s event and they hope to again be State qualifiers, hopefully advancing to Nationals. You can rent it for $25 an hour, as well as, a 5 hour rental for $75 or a full day for $100 you may also add a bouncy house for an additional $100 - $150 depending on the unit. Bouncy Houses are available to rent at your home, business, church and parks. They are a great addition to any event! Fund Raising We will be hosting an end of summer event that can help to fund raise for the Center and the various programs we plan to offer.
