Ppulatin: All ppulatins wh utilize wheelchairs fr ambulatin r individuals with high fall risk. Prgram Descriptin: Chair yga is an excellent interventin that has evidence backing its beneficial utcmes. Chair yga can be used as an adaptatin frm regular yga fr an individual, wh has difficulty balancing, is cnfined t a wheelchair, r wh is a high fall risk. Chair yga assists in imprving balance, strength, flexibility, anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, pain, and arthritis amng thers. Client Prblems that may be Addressed: Yga has been knwn t help imprve sleep (Manjunath, Telles, 2005), imprve strength and decrease arthritis symptms (Dash, Telles, 2001), imprve md/anxiety (Gaur, 2001), decrease chrnic pain (Gaur, 2001), and imprve breathing difficulties (Nagarathna, Nagendra, Seethalakshmi, 1991). Cntraindicated Criteria: Sme clients may have physical limitatin such as paralysis r a traumatic injury that may need additinal adaptatin fr the client t participate. Interventin Activity: Depending n the ppulatin (high/lw functining) explain what yga and chair yga is and its benefits. Explain t all participants t take breaks when needed, t listen t their bdies, t stay hydrated, and t take it at their wn pace. Fllw prtcl and take breath breaks frequently. Finish by asking participants hw they feel and prvide water fr hydratin. Staff Training and Certificatin Requirements: Each staff member shuld be certified and licensed (if applicable) as a certified therapeutic recreatin specialist (CTRS) and be required t maintain his r her licensure and certificatin. Mrever, each staff member shuld be trained and educated in implementing a chair yga interventin; understanding the benefits and/r risks that are invlved in using chair yga as an interventin. Risk Management Cnsideratins: Similar t any physical activity, injury can ccur if nt dne prperly. Mrever, be familiar with any serius illness/injury that yur client may be experiencing s that yu can prvide apprpriate adaptatins. Anticipated Outcmes: Clients will understand the benefits and pses f chair yga. With regular participatin, clients will imprve strength, flexibility, decrease stress/anxiety, imprve sleeping patterns, and decrease pain amng thers. Prgram Evaluatin: Staff will ask clients abut their experience with yga and hw they felt befre and after the interventins indentifying validity f the use f yga and/r chair yga as an apprpriate interventin.
