The city also features excellent year-round sports facilities. The first documented exploration of this area by the European community was in 1793 when Alexander Mackenzie, traveling by canoe, passed through in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean. Since then, Fort St. John underwent five location changes to adapt to the needs of a growing community and settled in it s current location in 1923; it has grown 49% over the last 25 years. The influx in population occurring in the 30 s when the Peace River area was opened to homesteading, the building of the Alaska Highway and in the 50 s when the first oil well was drilled near Fort St. John.
