1 BANFF HOCKEY ACADEMY High Performance Program VARSITY-16U Live, Study & Play Not many players get the chance to live, study and play in such an awe-inspiring place like Banff. The BHA program has been well tested by experience. For 21 years, players have enjoyed an abundance of ice time, outstanding coaches and play in the competitive west. The program is only for the most dedicated. Those hard working athletes selected to be a part of this prestigious program enjoy tremendous opportunities to train and play with players from around the world. The most powerful testament to the BHA program is the number of BHA alumni playing college hockey. Utilizing our rich history of developing talent, the Banff Hockey Academy Varsity Program is a High Performance Program designed for players 16 years of age and younger. PAGE 1
2 ACADEMICS All students of the BHA attend the Banff Community High School and follow the Alberta Learning Curriculum for grades 7 through 12. This uniquely designed scholastic program allows athletes the opportunity to train during regular school hours while maintaining their academic responsibilities and standards. All students are required to attend mandatory study halls Monday through Thursday evenings. These study halls are tutored by certified teachers. Most study halls have a student to teacher ratio of 8:1. Although hockey is a focus, it is important to note that academics are always put first. If the Banff Hockey Academy students are not maintaining sufficient grades, their training will be put on hold just as it would be in a university settings. Upon successful completion of Grade 12, student athletes are awarded an Alberta High School Diploma, which is highly regarded among post secondary institutions. It is also very similar to a university setting and challenges students to learn the basic requirements for academic success. PAGE 2
3 HOCKEY PROGRAM 360 HOURS OF ON-ICE TIME, INCLUDES GAMES, 120 HOURS OF OFF-ICE TRAINING The BHA Varsity team trains both on and off the ice daily. Practices are held from Monday-Friday for 90 minutes. Off ice training takes place either before skating sessions or after them. The Varsity team will play games in league, tournament and exhibition play. The Varsity team will compete against teams in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League (CSSHL). This league includes teams from Kelowna (Pursuit of Excellence), Penticton (Okanagan Hockey Academy), and Calgary (Edge School and SISEC), and Vancouver Island (Shawnigan Lake School). Every member of the BHA Varsity team is affiliated to the BHA Prep team, allowing for further development and exposure. Off Ice training at the BHA is held at a variety of facilities. The High School gym as well as the newly renovated Sally Borden host training held by our experienced and knowledgeable trainers. BHA students are also mentored through peak mental performance strategies such as visualization, goal setting, and positive thinking strategies. These sessions are lead by Peak Mental Performance coach Richard Monette and held every days in a classroom setting and also through individual meetings. BHA s history includes players from 4 continents and 11 different countries. Many international players return home to play for their respective National teams. Many BHA alumni have advanced onto Junior A, college and pro. The Banff Hockey Academy is a proud member of the Canadian Sports School Hockey League. PAGE 3
