PALATINE TIGER SHARKS JANUARY 2015 SHARKBEAT COACH S CORNER Hello all, With the holidays in the rear-view mirror, that means we have arrived at the home stretch of the short course season. The swimmers have been working hard all season and the coaching staff is more than excited to see some impressive results in the pool as we approach championship season. We all hope that everyone can attend Early Bird Registration on March 9 th, from 6-8pm, at Birchwood. Attending Early Bird is a great way to meet new families and have any questions answered. For any families looking to join the Tiger Sharks, our try-outs will be held on March 2 nd and March 4 th, from 6-7pm, at Harper College. From the swimmers, to the parent board, and all the family members involved with our program, thank you for your continued support and patience as we approach the D211 pool renovations. It is no secret that it takes everyone to make each and every season successful. Live slow, swim fast 1
PALATINE TIGER SHARKS JANUARY 2015 PRESIDENT S REPORT From the President Happy New Year everyone I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday season. Now that we are getting back to our daily grind and ritual, I think of swimming. What sport offers more of a daily routine than swimming? My wife and I were just talking about my son Garrett. He swam with PPD for 5 years, and recently decided to put a hold on swimming while he pursues his passions in basketball and football. One thing we have noticed since he has stopped swimming is that his daily routine is not as set. Swimming is a year round daily or every other day sport. This teaches our kids the benefit of having a set routine, which will help them in school, college, and in the work place down the road. Also speaking from someone who swam through high school.when I was swimming, I was NOT in trouble. The rest of the time? I ll save that for another article. As we approach our winter splash, I just want to thank everyone in advance for volunteering their time to make this another successful PPD Tiger Shark meet. We cannot do it without ALL of us chipping in. There has been a lot talk of implementing fees or fines for not working our shifts. Traditionally, we have been hesitant to force this issue. For me, it sums up as I want people to WANT to volunteer maybe that is super naive on my part. But I feel that this is one of the reasons as to why we host successful meets. Our parents want to be there. Our parents would rather time or officiate than sit in the stands and read the paper. Our parents understand that by supporting the sport of swimming, they are supporting the long term health of the team and community. Our parents understand that by actively volunteering, this program will continue being THE most economical and competitive program in the state. Personally, I look forward to swim meets and volunteering. I love watching the kids compete and cheering for all PPD kids. I hope you feel the same way too. That being said, if we don t have all of our parents step up and volunteer, fining is the only way to go. Finally, I want to thank all of the coaches for their continued dedication and hard work. We have been a little short staffed on the deck lately, and they have all put in extra hours to make sure the kids have enough coaching to be successful. They care so much for our kids please consider thanking them for all they do to help our children grow and learn Enjoy Graham Nelson 2
PALATINE TIGER SHARKS JANUARY 2015 TREASURER REPORT Thank you to all of our parents who so generously donated your time to the Swim Team in 2014 Because of all of your efforts, we ended the year on a strong financial note. If you ever have any questions regarding any of the finances of the team, please do not hesitate to come to a board meeting or contact the treasurer and we will be happy to go over the financial statements with you. Thank you ahead of time for all your hard work the weekend of January 17 and 18 when the Palatine Swim Team will host our 36th annual Winter Splash. In addition to providing a lot of fun for our swimmers, our hosted swim meets contribute quite a bit toward covering the expenses of our overall swim team program. In 2015, in addition to the Winter Splash in January, the Palatine Swim Team will host the Summer Frenzy in June and the Summer Splash in July. You may have some questions about why our team hosts our own meets each year and why it is so important that each and every family volunteer for these meets. Our Swim Team relies on various forms of income generation in order to provide the high-level program to our swimmers that it does. Hosting a swim meet is one of the highest income generators for our team. Without hosting these swim meets, our swim team fees would be substantially higher. Hosted meets are a critical element to the success of our program and help to keep our program fees among the lowest, if not the lowest, in our surrounding swimming community. And without help from all of our families, the hosted meets would be substantially less successful. Every family on our team will need to contribute to each of our hosted meets every season. Whether it s timing events, admissions, concessions, swimmer check-in; set up, clean up, the possibilities for your help to the team are endless... and needed... and very much appreciated 3
