WESTERN MICHIGAN WOMEN S BASKETBALL BEST START IN OVER A DECADE The Broncos opened the 2014-15 season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2002-03... the team s 4-1 start is also its best since 2002-03... WMU has not gone 5-1 since the 1998-99 lost its season-opener and then rattled off 7-straight wins. CLIPFELL PERFECT IN SEASON OPENERS In his third season, Western Michigan head coach Shane Clipfell is 3-0 in season openers... the last Bronco coach to win the opening game in three straight years was legendary Hall of Fame coach Fran Ebert (1978-80). LAST TIME OUT - BRONCOS POST 70-45 WIN OVER KENTUCKY STATE The Broncos shot over 50 percent in each half and were 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from behind the arc which registered as WMU s best long-distance shooting over the first five games this season... sophomore Meredith Shipman knocked down two of those 3 s on her way to a career-high 10 points. Junior forward Miracle Woods scored a team season-high 16 points, followed by junior Jessica Jessing s 15 points... senior Michelle O Brien led the charge on the board with 10 rebounds... junior point guard Alex Morton had five assists for the second-straight game... WMU raced out to a 40-20 halftime lead and held its opponent to 25.4 shooting for the night. EVERYONE IN THE ACTION All 12 players that have dressed this season have scored, including all five freshmen... hometown freshman from Kalamazoo Central Aneisha Carlisle became the 12th player to score, netting her first collegiate points last game against Kentucky State, converting two fast break layups off of steals and assists from fellow freshman Alexis Parks. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL Western Michigan has done a good job taking care of the ball, averaging only 13.8 turnovers per game this season... the Broncos are forcing 20.8 turnovers for a +7.0 margin over their opponents... WMU coughed the ball up just seven times in the season-opener vs. UMass. 24 LOOKING TO BE NUMBER 25 Junior Miracle Woods (#24) is on track to become the 25th player in WMU women s basketball history to reach 1,000 career points... Woods entered the 2014-15 season with 692 points and currently has 733. WESTERN MICHIGAN PICKED PRESEASON THIRD MAC WEST Western Michigan returns almost its entire roster from last year, including all five starters, and was picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference West Division after posting a 13-18 overall record, 8-10 MAC record in 2013-14... it is the highest preseason ranking for WMU since the Broncos were picked to finish second in the 2006-07 season. 2014-15 MAC East Preseason Poll 1. Buffalo (8 First Place Votes) 2. Bowling Green (3) 3. Akron 4. Ohio (1) 5. Miami 6. Kent State 2014-15 MAC West Preseason Poll 1. Central Michigan (11) * 2. Ball State (1) 3. Western Michigan 4. Toledo 5. Eastern Michigan 6. Northern Illinois * predicted tournament champion WHAT WE ARE WORKING WITH The team features four seniors - Marquisha Harris, A.J. Johnson, Michelle O Brien and Jazmine Windham... a strong junior class is led by 6-0 forward Miracle Woods, who led the team in scoring (16.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.2 rpg) in 2013-14 and was a Preseason All-MAC pick this season... the other two juniors are point guard Alex Morton and Jessica Jessing, the team s Sixth Man of the Year recipient the last two seasons... Meredith Shipman is the lone sophomore and five talented freshmen join the roster - LaTondra Brooks, Aneisha Carlisle, Alexis Parks, Najee Smith and Teagan Reeves... Brooks, Carlisle, Parks and Smith all play the guard position, while Reeves is a 6-3 center and is listed as the tallest player on the team. YEAR THREE The Broncos are led by third-year head coach Shane Clipfell, who has improved the program s win total in each of his first two seasons... two years ago, Clipfell took on the task of rebuilding the Bronco program that had posted just 33 wins and 17 conference victories in the four seasons prior.... since then, the Broncos have advanced to the second round of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland in back-to-back seasons. PROTECT THIS HOUSE Western Michigan did a good job protecting its home floor during MAC play in 2013-14, where the Broncos went 6-3 at University Arena and 1-0 in the MAC Tournament... WMU struggled on the road however, going 2-7 in MAC away games... the Broncos were 5-10 overall on the road last season and did not play any neutral site games. FIVE TIMES AS NICE Western Michigan had five players score in double figures in two games last season - vs. Miami (1/4) & Toledo (1/18). IMPORTANCE OF THE BOARDS Western Michigan out-rebounded opponents in four MAC games in 2013-14, Northern Illinois (41-27), Ohio (48-36) and Eastern Michigan (54-36) and Central Michigan (44-37)... the Broncos won the first three of the four... WMU also outrebounded Miami in the MAC Tournament first round victory, 42-33. LOW POST DUO WOODS & HARRIS PICK UP ALL-MAC HONORS Last season forward Miracle Woods (MAC regular season: 16.1 ppg/7.7 rpg) was named All-MAC Second Team and forward Marquisha Harris (MAC regular season: 14.4 ppg/6.9 rpg) was named Honorable Mention All-MAC... it was the second year in a row the low post duo earned recognition, Harris was also an Honorable Mention in 2012-13, while Woods was an All-Freshman selection... Woods became the first Bronco to earn First or Second Team All-MAC honors since Tiera DeLaHoussaye was a first teamer in 2008... the two were additionally honored by College Sports Madness - Woods was a First Team All-MAC selection and Harris was named Fourth Team. MAC SCHEDULE This is the second-straight year teams will play an 18-game Mid-American Conference schedule, moving away from the prveios 16-game format last season... each team will play opponents in their division both home & away, as well as face opponents from the opposite division at least once, with two extra games, which are determined by a computer draw... WMU s extra two games from the East are Buffalo and Akron, who Western Michigan will also face twice, in addition to those opponents from the MAC West. BIG NUMBERS ON THE BOARDS Marquisha Harris had 19 rebounds vs. Chicago State on Dec. 1, 2013, her total ranked as the third most in a single game in Bronco women s basketball history... WESTERN MICHIGAN WOMEN S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH SHANE CLIPFELL The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics officially announced the hiring of Shane Clipfell as the sixth women s basketball coach in program history, Friday, April 13, 2012. Clipfell has strong ties in the state of Michigan, the Mid- American Conference and the Midwest and has worked at every level of women s basketball. 2013-14: Western Michigan continued its ascend in Clipfell s second season, posting the most wins for program since 2007-08 with a 13-18 overall record, 8-10 MAC record. The Broncos finished fourth in the MAC West after being picked fifth in the preseason poll. The team improved its overall win total & MAC win total by two from Clipfell s first season. The Broncos also improved their seeding by two from the previous year in the MAC Tournament, earning a first round home game as the No. 7 seed, where they defeated Miami, 82-72. WMU went on to make its second straight trip to Cleveland in as many years under Clipfell, after failing to advance to Quicken Loans Arena for tournament play the previous four years prior to his tenure. Coming off a sweep of Toledo in the regular season for the first time since 2006, Western Michigan could not get past the Rockets for a third time in the year, bowing out in the second round of the tournament with a loss to UT. WMU s 78-72 win on the road in the regular season was the Broncos first in Toledo since 2008. During the MAC season, Western Michigan protected its home floor, going 6-3 at University Arena and 1-0 in the MAC Tournament against its league counterparts. Regardless of venue, the Broncos were not easily disposed of, as five of the team s conference losses were by less than 10 points. WMU s offense had improved significantly, averaging 68.1 ppg in 2013-14 during MAC games, nearly 13 ppg more than the season before. For the second straight year, the low post duo of Miracle Woods and Marquisha Harris earned recognition from the conference. Woods was named Second Team All-MAC, becoming the first Bronco since 2008 to pick up the award, and Harris was named Honorable Mention All-MAC. Both were also MAC Player of the Week selections during the season. 2012-13: The 2012-13 season marked the beginning of the Clipfell era at Western Michigan, as he took on the task of rebuilding the Bronco program that had posted just 33 wins and 17 conference victories in the four seasons prior. Progress could be seen across the board in Clipfell s first season. The team posted an 11-20 overall and 6-10 Mid-American Conference record, marking the most wins in five years. The team also advanced to the second round of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2008 after defeating higher-seeded Eastern Michigan on the road in the first round. Another signature win for the Broncos was a 55-54 victory over then eight-time defending regular season MAC champion Bowling Green in Kalamazoo. COACHING CAREER Western Michigan Head Coach, second season Acting Head Coach, Eastern Michigan (one season - 2007: 13-12 overall, 11-5 MAC record) Head Coach, Glen Oaks Community College (three seasons, 1996-98: 58-35 record) Assistant Coach, Michigan State (five seasons, 2008-12) Assistant Coach, Eastern Michigan (nine seasons, 1999-2007) EDUCATION Bachelor s degree in communications, Eastern Michigan, 2006 Clipfell s totals set a new mark for the most overall wins (11) and MAC wins (6) as a first-year head coach at Western Michigan. He also became the first women s basketball coach to win his first game at WMU (defeated American, 57-53) and win a MAC Tournament game in his first season. Two Broncos were recognized for their play by the conference. Sophomore forward Marquisha Harris was named Honorable Mention All-MAC and freshman center Miracle Woods was one of five named to the All-MAC Freshman team. PRIOR TO WMU: In the previous 14 years prior to Western Michigan, Clipfell worked in different capacities on a Suzy Merchant staff. He began with Merchant as an assistant at Eastern Michigan during the 1998-99 season and coached alongside Merchant at Michigan State for five years after Merchant took the Spartan helm in 2007-08. For the final three years, Clipfell served as the associate head coach at Michigan State, coordinating the program s recruiting efforts, including organizing official, unofficial, off-campus and home visits. In addition to recruiting, Clipfell focused on MSU s offensive game preparation, in-game adjustments and skill development of perimeter players. The Spartans captured their first outright Big Ten title in school history in 2010-11 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four-straight seasons. While Clipfell was at Michigan State, the Spartans produced 17 All-Big Ten recognitions, 20 Academic All-Big Ten selections, and several players collected major Big Ten awards. In the nine seasons at Eastern Michigan, Clipfell helped build the Eagles into one of the top programs in the MAC. EMU compiled a record of 160-103 (.608), including three 20-win seasons, three postseason appearances and two MAC West Division titles. The 2003-04 team claimed the MAC West Division and MAC Tournament championship for the first time in school history, earning the program s first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament en route to a 22-8 record. Clipfell was the acting head coach at Eastern Michigan for all but four games of the 2006-07 season, while Merchant was on maternity leave. He guided the Eagles to a 13-12 record and a second place finish in the MAC West with an 11-5 record. For his efforts, Clipfell received votes for MAC Coach of the Year honors. Individually, senior Sarah VanMetre became EMU s first women s basketball player to be named an Academic All- American, senior Patrice McKinney was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and freshman Alyssa Pittman was named MAC Freshman of the Year. PREVIOUS HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE: Prior to coaching at the Division I level, Clipfell spent five seasons at Glen Oaks Community College, including three as head coach, and 11 years as the varsity head coach at Colon High School. PERSONAL: Clipfell (DOB: 8/29/63) earned a bachelor of science degree in communications at Eastern Michigan in 2006. Before Clipfell joined the coaching profession full-time at the collegiate level, he worked in the manufacturing industry. Clipfell and his wife, Connie, have two adult children, John and Lauren.
