In , the WAC will create a new digital network to give fans streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball. The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports nine men s and 10 women s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Southern Illinois leads the series 3-1. LAST TIME THEY MET - DECEMBER 29, 2012 Paris Williams scored 17 points off the bench and Layne Murphy collected a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds), but the Cougars fell at the Jones Convocation Center. CONFERENCE HISTORY - This will be Chicago State s first season in the WAC after spending the previous four seasons in the Great West Conference. The Cougars were an independent from after 12 seasons in the Summit League. Prior to their time in the Summit, Chicago State spent one season in the East Coast League ( ) and their first seven years in Division I as an independent. ONE OF THE BEST - Paris Williams leads the WAC in steals (3.3) and ranks 5th in points per game (15.6). She is the only player in the WAC to average at least 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game. 7 HEAD COACH ANGELA JACKSON The season will be Angela Jackson s 11th season as Chicago State s women s basketball head coach. She is the program s all-time leader in wins with 121. She guided the Cougars to the program s best ever season in when her squad won the Great West Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Cougars defeated Eastern Illinois and Cleveland State on their way to the Women s Basketball Invitational Final Four. The team won a school-record 24 games. Jackson was named GWC Coach of the Year. Courtney Waldon was named the GWC Player of the Year. Jackson s student-athletes have stood out on and off the court. Since the season, six Cougars have made conference All-Academic teams. Her teams have earned multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores higher than the NCAA average in three of the past four years including two single season 1,000 APR scores during that time. In her first 10 seasons with Chicago State, Jackson has coached six of the top nine scorers in Cougars history including five 1,000-point scorers (Courtney Waldon, Jasmin Dixon, Janay Dockery, Tina Hill and Kafayat Davies). She has had four (Tressa Beckel, Jasmin Dixon, Zondrankia Williams and Kafayat Davies) student-athletes sign professional contracts overseas. Her players have earned all-conference selections 26 times including six first team all-conference nods. Over her tenure, the Cougars have earned 16 conference player of the week honors. The Cougars have been just as dangerous outside of conference play during Jackson s reign. Her Chicago State teams have recorded non-conference victories over programs from 14-different conferences. Most notably she has made a habit of beating local rivals. She owns a victory over Northwestern, four wins over city rival Loyola-Chicago, three against Northern Illinois along with one over Valparaiso and a pair against Eastern Illinois. She s also defeated Tulane, Saint Louis and twice taken down Dayton. Since the season, the Cougars have averaged at least ten steals per game and have ranked no lower than 64th among all of the Division I schools in the NCAA. Jasmin Dixon recorded 260 steals during her career from 2005 to She finished 13th in the nation in 2007 with 3.3 steals per game. Chicago State has also shown the ability to shoot from distance under Jackson. Between , her teams shot at least 33 percent from the 3-point line and ranked in the NCAA s top 40 in three-point shooting from Courtney Waldon, Chicago State s Division I all-time leader in scoring and 3-pointers made, ranked in the NCAA s top 40 in threepoint shooting percentage during three of her four seasons under Jackson. Waldon finished her career with 1,581 points. She concluded the season ranked ninth in the nation with an average of pointers per contest. Prior to her arrival at Chicago State, Jackson spent time with Michigan and Michigan State. As an associate head coach at Michigan, she was a part of a staff that made two WNIT tournaments and made the round of 32 of the NCAA tournament twice as an assistant with Michigan State. Jackson was also the head coach of NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley State for one season and an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Wayne State University. Before venturing into coaching, Jackson had a decorated playing career at Odessa and Old Dominion University. She made the all-conference team twice in her two years at Odessa and helped lead her team to a NJCAA National Tournament appearance as a sophomore. After transferring to Old Dominion, she averaged 16.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game for the team that won the Sun Belt conference and advanced to the second round of the 1990 NCAA tournament. Jackson graduated in 1991 with a bachelor s degree in health and physical education from Old Dominion. 8 CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY COUGARS ASSISTANT COACHES Assistant Coach Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Renada Blackburn Eighth Season Gloria Bradley First Season The season will be the eight season for Renada Blackburn as an assistant under coach Jackson. She works with the post players, film exchange and the academic progress of the team. Since the season, six Cougars have made conference All-Academic teams. The women s basketball team has recorded higher APR scores than the NCAA average in three of the past four years including two single season 1,000 APR scores during that time. In her coaching career, Blackburn has coached four of the top nine scorers in Chicago State Division I history. She has coached 22 all conference players including six who earned first team all-conference selections. Blackburn s banner year as an assistant was in the season as the team set a school record with 24 wins, claiming the Great West regular season and tournament championships. It was the school s first women s basketball postseason appearance, which ended in a trip to the Women s Basketball Invitational Final Four. Chicago State had two members make the Great West All-Conference team (Courtney Waldon, Tressa Beckel). Caila Desroches won Sixth Woman of the Year, was named to the Great West Conference All-Tournament Team and won the conference tournament MVP. A former player for head coach Angela Jackson, Blackburn was a four-year letter winner ( ). She averaged 7.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game and graduated fourth all-time on the Cougars Division I rebound list (621). Her 8.4 rebounds in the season ranked 87th among all Division I players while her 8.5 rebounds in the year placed her 73rd in the nation. The All-Academic Summit League player graduated from Chicago State in 2006 with a degree in psychology. Assistant Coach Gloria Bradley brings 18 years of NCAA head coaching experience to the Chicago State bench as she joins the CSU staff as the Cougars assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women s basketball program for the season. Before coming to Chicago State, Bradley spent 11 seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II Wayne State in Detroit, Mich. She won 126 games and helped produce two All-Americans, 15 all-conference players, seven all-conference defensive team members and four 1,000-point scorers. Her teams qualified for seven Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournaments. In 2003, she guided Wayne State to the program s first NCAA Tournament appearance and received the school s Outstanding Contributor Award in In 2010, Bradley received the Judy Sweet Award at the NCAA Women s Coaches Academy. Prior to her time at Wayne State, Bradley spent seven seasons at NCAA Division III Montclair State University ( ). She directed Montclair State to Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in 1994, 1997 and Her 1995 squad won the school s first New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Bradley spent one season ( ) as an assistant at Montclair State before taking over the program. Before arriving at Montclair State, she was an assistant at Seton Hall from Before her coaching career, she was a standout basketball player at Seton Hall University. A four-year letter winner and a 1984 First Team All-Big East Conference player, Bradley ranks in the top five for field goal percentage (1st), blocks (2nd) and rebounds (3rd). She also is in the top 15 in field goals (11th), steals (12th) and scoring (13th). She was named the New Jersey Player of the Year in Her play at Seton Hall lead her to get drafted by the Atlanta Comets of the Women s American Basketball Association. Along with her bachelor s degree in secondary education/mathematics from Seton Hall in 1984, Bradley earned her master s degree in administration and supervision from Montclair State in Loretta Soria First Season Loretta Soria enters her first season as an assistant coach with Chicago State women s basketball in after spending the previous five seasons as an associate head coach at Indiana University Northwest. During her five seasons with Indiana University Northwest, Soria assisted with game strategies, scouting, skill improvement of her players and travel arrangements for road trips. She also developed the team s strength and conditioning program and supervised the academic achievement of her players. Prior to her time at the NAIA school, the former Chicago State Cougar ( ) was an assistant coach at Calumet College before being promoted to head coach. She was also an academic counselor and Compliance Coordinator for Athletics while at Calumet. Before she made the jump into coaching, Soria (Ellul) was a standout at Chicago State University. She ranks second all-time in Cougars Division I history for three-point field goal percentage (.346) and third in three-pointers made (157). In her senior season ( ), Soria set the single season Chicago State Division I record, shooting.461 from beyond the arc. Her playing career continued after Chicago State, where she played for the Malta National Team. Her Malta team won the European Olympic Gold Medal (June 2009) and the FIBA European Division C Championship (July 2008). She also made the European All-Star Five Selection at the Division C Championships. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Soria received her degree in physical education at Chicago State and a degree in elementary education from Calumet College. 8
