COURTOIS FACTS Pronounced "code-away" or "cur-toy," the Courtois is a spring-fed, crystal clear, beautiful stream that feeds the Meramec River. It has a gravel bottom that is easily observable through the clear waters. Its banks are lined with beautiful wild flowers, gracious bluffs, and dark caves. We love our stream and believe you will too. Choose a Courtois Excursion Brazil to Berryman This 8-mile trip is for canoes and kayaks. A beautiful trip for those who like to enjoy the natural beauty of the stream. This part of the stream is not frequently floated. It may have a tree across or be partly blocked at times. Excellent fishing and natural serenity of the outdoors makes this a unique experience. Berryman to Blunt Slab Approximately 7-mile trip for canoes and kayaks. This part of the stream can pose a challenge to the novice in the Spring after a good rain which raises its rapids to a Class II status; or it can be a great, leisurely outing for the entire family and your friends at normal levels when it is rated a Class I. Blunts Low Water Bridge to Bass This adventure is approximately 6 miles long. This is truly one of the nicest parts of the Courtois. You will be taken upstream where you will float right back to where your car is parked. There are large winding gravel bars that provide numerous opportunities for riverside picnicking. Herons and other wildlife often frequent the long still pools of crystal clear water where they feed upon schools of minnows easily observed along the shallow, clear river bottom. Choose this short duration float for a fun filled river trip full of swimming, fishing, and fun in the sun. Bass to Scotia Starting at the low water bridge at Bass this trip is approximately 7.5 miles. This is certainly one of the more wilderness-type of trips we have to offer. There are deep, dark caves on the banks of this section of the stream. You'll float through a section of Mark Twain National Forest and on to the Huzzah Wildlife Area. If you're looking for a little tranquility, this section is not floated as frequently because you don't end up at your vehicle. But this stream is not like any other because about 100 yards above Scotia low water bridge is the confluence of the Huzzah and Courtois. Scotia to Onondaga Approximately 4 to 5 miles the stream becomes a little wider and is called the Huzzah for the next 1.5 miles, and then it enters into the Meramec River. For the next 3 miles the water is very deep, slow, and wide. In most places you can't see the bottom: excellent trip for the true fisherman. When you reach Onondaga there's a high water bridge you float under and take out on the right.
