Dear Band Members and Families, Band camp is always the beginning of a new and exciting time. Whether you are a senior or a freshman it is a new experience of some sort and will be different from years past. No matter what grade you are in, the first day of band camp can lead to at least some anxiety. For freshmen it is the fear of the unknown as well as the rumors you ve heard of how hot or how hard it is. For returning members it can be the excitement of seeing old friends and the anticipation of a new season, as well as the anxiety of knowing the task at hand. In either case, just push yourself out of the door and come on! You will be glad you did. Freshmen, remember that everyone who has done this before you know how you feel. Relax and enjoy the experience. Before you know it you ll be a senior getting ready for your last band camp. To help make band camp successful and enjoyable it is important that we all take some proactive measures to ensure a positive and safe experience. Some of the steps may seem trivial, but they have been proven over the years to make a HUGE difference. They are: Eat breakfast every day. Even if you don t normally eat breakfast. Make it a habit this week. Drink lots of water. Everyone is asked to have their own water jug. The parents provide cold water to refill these throughout the day. Having your own jug saves time and prevents you from spreading germs by sharing water with others. Wear light colored loose fitting clothes. Wear tennis shoes with socks (keep the blisters away). Flipflops and sandals are not allowed on the field. Your favorite black shirt will not be a good choice. Wear a hat! Use sunscreen. We will emphasize this at every break. Be on time! Leaders get there first.think about it. A Note to Freshman Parents: Two days before camp your freshman (or rookie member) may decide they don't want to do band after all. This is NORMAL; just shove 'em out the door! We promise to take good care of them. Tradition is a word you will hear many times this year. As long as I have known of the Newton-Conover Band, tradition has been a word that is always used to describe it. I encourage you to do some research of your own on band traditions. See what you can find out about band traditions, whether it be Big 10 college bands or other high schools. You-tube allows you to even see other band performances. See what others have done and still do compared to what we do. You will have the opportunity to meet many alumni and former band parents this year. Through this very unique organization and time in our history, I hope to give you an experience that will unite the past, the present and the future of the Newton-Conover Band. You will be a part of an organization like no other. I am glad you will be a part of our band family and look forward to another great year! Sincerely, Haskew Smith Haskew.smith@n-ccs.org Voice:(828)465.0947 Fax: (828) 464-1412
