20 June 2016 To whom it may concern, Thank you for considering support and sponsorship for the upcoming Alcohol free and Smokefree Ease Up Tāirawhiti Māori Sports Awards to be held on Saturday, 10 September 2016 from 4pm at the Quality Emerald Hotel. 1. Te Tāirawhiti Māori Sports Awards opens doors and provides opportunities: this event has not been hosted in Gisborne for nine years, so is extremely exciting for many of us in our Māori community. Te Tāirawhiti Māori Sports Awards has the ability, passion and drive to succeed in 2016. 2. The significance of a Regional Māori Sports Awards is: acknowledging positive social behaviours in sport with a Māori specific focus, while embracing our culture. 3. Being nominated for an award category can mean: with your support and financial assistance local Māori sporting athletes and volunteers goals will be realised. It provides our Māori sporting community the opportunity for us, to further support their talent and to bring out the best in our athletes. It provides opportunities to be recognised by talent scouts, which can lead to further sporting opportunities possibly through a national link and/or beyond. This would lead to better coaching and development opportunities. 4. Winning an award category can mean: through Te Tāirawhiti Māori Sports Awards Māori talent is promoted and recognised. The ability to drive and succeed can further support their career pathway in sport, for recipients (category winners). Doors can be opened to support opportunities to an international career. It acknowledges our Key Champions and Role Models in our community. It creates leadership opportunities for our rangatahi (youth) to aspire to and draw strength from. Some recipients will be eligible to be nominated for the National Māori Sports Awards which is held annually in November. 5. The long term financial sustainability of the Tāirawhiti Māori Sports Awards can be achieved through/by support and buy-in from local Iwi (ie; TRONP or TROTAK). HISTORY: Te Tāirawhiti Māori Sports Awards previously known as the Turanganui a Kiwa Māori Sports Awards was first held in 1994 when Te Runanga O Turanganui A Kiwa (TROTAK) had the Māori Sports Co-ordinator position. It was an annual event until 2007. The advisory (organising) committee was representative of stalwarts from within the Māori Sporting community such as Tina Karaitiana (Netball), the late Phil Hapi (Golf), the late Bill Donnelly (Golf), the late Papa Toko Te Kani (Māori Rugby) and Hiki Swann (Māori Rugby). Driven largely by TROTAK, strong relationships and partnerships were forged with Te Runanga O Ngati Porou to ensure the celebration was uniquely Turanganui a Kiwa and Ngati Porou. Previous Masters of Ceremonies included Derek Fox and Matai Smith. Previous Guest speakers included Tina Bell-Kake (Hockey), Rua Tipoki (Rugby), Wynton Rufer (Football) amongst others. Where the local awards had the same categories as the National Māori Sports Awards, those category winners were nominated for the National Māori Sports Awards. 3

Two trophies are still held by TROTAK, from previous awards. These will be used as our guiding Tipuna (ancestors) for this event. Acknowledging past and present athletes, awards and those involved. Also, our tipuna in the whai korero. These pieces will be displayed on the stage at the event for all to see and acknowledge. 1993 Tauihu - Māori Sports Team of the Year Supreme trophy carved by Richard Francis, former Toihoukura Māori Arts Student Kaupapa: 'TE TAUIHU O TE WAKA-TAUA O TUMATAUENGA'. The atua TU as a TAUIHU, or a canoe brow, TUMATAUENGA God of challenge/war, (in competition to do battle) Te Tāirawhiti Open Men's Touch team 1993/4 won this Category the first year it was awarded. Richard happened to be part of that particular team. Willie Te Aho, General Manager of Te Runanga O Turanganui A Kiwa commissioned Richard to carve this for the Māori Sports Awards. Carved by Patrick Takoko Former Toihoukura Māori Arts Student If you have any queries please feel free to contact me. Thank you for considering this proposal.
