REVIEW: VELUX EHF Champions League Quarter-finals second leg MKB Veszprém KC (HUN) vs. THW Kiel (GER) 28:29; first leg: 31:32 After an extremely close first leg, which was only decided in the dying seconds, much of the same was expected in the second leg at the Veszprém Arena. Like in the first leg at Kiel, Veszprém dominated the first half and took an early lead. Kiel had the better re-start, equalising within three minutes and from then on the game was on a knife edge. Kiel held the upper hand and opened up a lead, forcing MKB coach Ortega to use his time-out card eight minutes before the end when Ahlm extended the gap to three goals for the first time at 26:23. The hosts reduced the gap to one goal before the final whistle, but it was not enough to reach their first VELUX EHF FINAL4. FC Barcelona Intersport (ESP) vs. Atlético Madrid (ESP) 32:24; first leg: 20:25 Barcelona played an incredible first half, with goalkeeper Danijel Šarić showing a world class performance. He enabled his teammates to run a never ending series of counter-attacks towards the goal of Jose Javier Hombrados. Atlético found their way back into the match, reducing the gap from 4:12 to 9:15 at the break. They improved their defence in the second leg with Kiril Lazarov scoring to make it 27:21 with five minutes left. Barcelona needed to step up a gear and they did just that. When Tomas scored to open up a seven-goal lead with two minutes left, the Palau Blaugrana became a party zone. KS Vive Targi Kielce (POL) vs. HC Metalurg (MKD) 26:15; first leg 27:25 Just like the previous games between these two teams, defence was the key for success of the Polish champions, especially the goalkeeping of superb Venio Losert. Metalurg managed to stand strong in the opening period, but the 12:8 half-time score was just the calm before the storm. Kielce s top scorer Michal Jurecki set the signs before the break by hammering in five goals. Kielce s defence stood solid as a rock and the Macedonians resigned, knowing their fate was sealed. Kielce overran their opponent with counter-attacks after Losert s saves as Kielce cruised into their first VELUX EHF FINAL4. HSV Hamburg (GER) vs. SG Flensburg-Handewitt (GER) 23:25; first leg: 32:26 HSV coach Martin Schwalb took a sigh of relief at the end of the game, knowing that his team were very close to elimination. Flensburg seemed to be more focused and Hamburg below par. Both goalkeepers dominated early on and the teams remained close, before Flensburg stole a three goal lead before the break. The second half saw a determined Flensburg and with 10 minutes to play, Flensburg were part of the VELUX EHF FINAL4, leading 23:16. Hamburg lost their pace completely, but it was then Flensburg s time to fall apart, missing six consecutive chances, giving HSV a chance to regain composure and take the aggregate lead, a lead which they held on to until the end. 6
