Both are compatible so that you can upgrade from a Manual to a Manual/ Automatic and vice versa in minutes if you wish. The Manual/Automatic version works like this (4): When the Inflator is lowered more than about 10 cm in the water, the hydrostatic valve opens and lets the water meet the water sensitive element, that in turn releases a stainless steel coil spring. The spring then drives a needle into the end of the gas cylinder, which is now punctured so that the gas instantly fills the lifejacket. Total buoyancy is normally reached within 4 5 seconds. NOTE: When wearing foul weather clothing a lifejacket has to overcome the fact that air is often trapped, causing the user to both surface quickly and float on the back. This may cause slow or non-activation of the Inflator, as this will place the valve uppermost, preventing it from being sufficiently submerged. An unchanged parallell position of the body to the water surface with the hydrostatic valve uppermost has the same effect. In such cases, the manual back-up (pull tab) should be used to inflate the lifejacket. Changing position in the water, or jumping or falling into the water in all other ways, will activate the hydrostatic valve and the lifejacket will inflate. Getting familiar with your lifejacket and the Manual/Automatic Inflator If you want to test your lifejacket in water, you can do this without activating the Inflator. Just inflate your jacket through the oral tube and then go swimming. The counter pressure inside the bladder will prevent the hydrostatic valve from opening! In this way you will not use up your gas cylinder and Inflator. After your swim, let the jacket dry off, and then deflate it. (See repacking below) The Manual Inflator (5) The Manual Inflator is activated by pulling the red handle. The gas cylinder is then punctured with a needle and the lifejacket inflates within seconds. Manual activation will not turn the single point indicator from green to red. It is only the automatic activation that activates the indicator. Service and maintenance The Manual/Automatic inflator needs replacement after use or after the five years expiry date. The Manual Inflator needs replacement after use. No expiry date. Periodical checking Check that the single point indicator is green. Check that expiry date is within the limit. Check that the gas cylinder is firmly tightened by holding it through the lifejacket fabric. Don t forget the annual service on your lifejacket! Please remember the periodical checking and inspection of the rest of the lifejacket. Check the instructions from the lifejacket manufacturer. Repacking If your lifejacket (PFD) has been used and/or the Hammar Inflator replaced, always inflate the jacket through the oral tube (6) and check that it stays inflated at least overnight. Empty the lifejacket (PFD) again by pushing in the non-return valve in the top of the oral tube and press out ALL residual air from the bladder, so that the jacket may be folded properly. the HAmmar lifejacket inflator rearming instruction 1 2 3 1. Place the lifejacket (PFD = Personal Floating Device) on a flat smooth surface and wipe off any water. Hold the gas cylinder through the fabric using one hand. 2. Insert metal key and turn the key anti-clockwise between black locking ring and labelled yellow cap. The black locking ring will now turn anticlockwise 3. Now turn black locking ring anticlockwise and lift off cap (cap = yellow inflator operating head). Dispose used cap. 4 5 6 4. Squeeze sealing ring to elongate and remove the inflator body through the sealing ring. 5. Unscrew the gas cylinder. Note: If hard to unscrew, hold the black inner body with a soft tissue/ clothing and hold the cylinder with a pipe pliers or other holding tool. 6. 7 8 9 tightening. 7. Reset the piercing pin by rotating the shaft in the inner body to a position where the underside monitor with eyelet surrounds the green dot in the centre of the indicator. 8. Carefully examine the top of the new gas cylinder to make sure that it is not punctured. The cylinder must be VERY FIRMLY TIGHTENED into the black inner body. The black inner body should be checked for any damage or splitting following this 9. Insert new inflator body with gas cylinder pointing upward inside the lifejacket (PFD). Let the sealing ring est in the inflator body around the four lugs. 10 11 12 10. Now check the automatic/manual cap as follows: Manual/Automatic: Check that the single point indicator is green Check that expiry date is within the limit. Manual: 11. Hold the gas cylinder through the life jacket fabric. Take the replacement cap with the pull tab pointing in the opposite direction to the gas bottle (i.e. Down) and press it FIRMLY onto the inflator body and sealing ring. 12. While pressing firmly onto the inflator body turn the black locking ring clockwise into the locked position. Pull the cap to make sure it has locked onto the inflator body. NOTE: When the inflator is in its final closed position, the gas cylinder, the side of the yellow cap and the pull handle are in parallell. If YES is the answer to ALL these questions, then proceed to item 11: CHECK: When the locking ring is locked, it cannot be turned anti-clockwise. If your lifejacket (PFD) has been used and/or the Hammar inflator replaced, always inflate the jacket through the oral tube and check that it stays inflated at least one hour. Empty the lifejacket again by pushing in the nonreturn valve in the top of the oral tube and press out ALL RESIDUAL AIR from the bladder, so that the jacket may be folded properly. The Hammar Manual/Automatic Inflator has a unique hydrostatic valve that works by the pressure difference between the inside of the bladder and the outside. When the inflator is lowered more than about app. 10 cm in water, the hydrostatic valve opens and water will have access to a water sensitive element. That in turn releases a stainless steel coil spring. The spring then drives a needle into the end of the gas cylinder, which is now punctured so that the gas instantly fills the life jacket. 2. Will the lifejacket inflate if the inflator gets wet or in humidity? NO because it requires pressure on the hydrostatic valve to allow water ingress to activate. It can withstand spray, wave splash and high humidity without causing accidental inflation. Accidental inflation can cause accidents! 3. Will the GAS cylinder corrode? NO the cylinder is carried inside the inflatable bladder and is therefore protected from the atmosphere and corrosive effects of salt water. 4. How can I tell if the GAS cylinder is leaking? Quite easy due to the cylinder being housed inside the inflatable bladder, this will start to inflate if the cylinder leaks. 5. What about in extreme cold conditions. Will it ice-up and thereby not inflate the life jacket bladder? Extreme cold conditions will not affect the hydrostatic system. The cylinder is inside the bladder and moisture cannot get in to form ice. Furthermore the gas does not have to enter through a valve to inflate the lifejacket. 6. How long does it take to inflate? Once the inflator is activated, it will take no more than 4-5 seconds to reach full inflation. Extreme cold (-30 o C) can prolong inflation by 1-2 seconds. 7. What about servicing the hydrostatic inflator? How often? How much will it cost? The hydrostatic inflator does not require servicing, therefore the cost is 0:-. The only time it will need to be serviced is: a) If it has been used, i.e. inflated. b) 5 years from manufacture. You will find the expiry date on the top label. To check that everything is OK: 1) Is the single point indicator green? 2) Is the red handle attached? If YES, the lifejacket is charged and ready for use. The lifejacket has to be serviced according to the life jacket manufacturers instruction. 8. How easy is it to rearm the lifejacket? Very simple. You can obtain a full rearming kit from your dealer that carries full step-by-step instructions. 9. If I want to try it in the water? Easy inflate the lifejacket through the oral tube and go swimming. The counter pressure inside the bladder prevent the hydrostatic valve from opening. Let the lifejacket dry and then deflate it in the normal way. You save the inflator and the cylinder. 10. How MUCH WILL THE LIFE JACKET INFLATOR COST?
